Wonderful, Kyle, wonderful ! As you grow older the sense of family kicks in, something that you never experience in your youth or early adult life. In the earlier days, you liked to go it alone, feeling invincible, not needing anyone. But it changes in later life. There are many lonely people out there Kyle, wishing they had someone to have a drink with, to talk softly over a cup of tea or coffee, or someone to share a meal with. Cherish every moment of this, keep in touch, give a call, drop a line, send a photo. Even animals like companionship. You may be Buddhist, but the Bible says when God made Adam " He saw it was not good for the man to be alone, so he made a helper.....a complement for him....Eve". That is the start of family. Thanks for this video again Kyle. Thanks for the wonderful food too. Make up your mind where you are heading to. Lost time cannot be recovered and so must be used wisely. As you age, it runs out faster, I tell you ! Enjoy it ! Trinidad & Tobago West Indies.

Thank you Kyle! I'm a young Vietnamese studying abroad and working hard with hopes for a better future and to help my family. I've lived abroad most my life so I feel a similar disconnect to my extended family, but just like you, I love family gatherings where the atmosphere is so lively and warm. Your videos are heart-warming and relatable, thanks for the content!

Family time is the best time. I came from a very large extended Family , but my wife didn't and she always says how lucky I am and considers herself lucky to be thought of as family in all of mine. I thought it was so beautiful that you have included your driver and obviously your friend Minh in you family get together. You have a good heart my friend.

I can relate to this so much, I’m half Taiwanese and Vietnamese living in Australia with only family. All our relatives are in Taiwan and Vietnam so we only see them a few weeks every few years and also feel like the disconnect in cultures but at the same time when we’re back it still feel like one big family on both side even though I’m closer to my Taiwan relatives ~

Family is always a complicated affair in VN. People assume it's a great vacation/leisurely travel experience for Viet Kieu, but it's so much more than that. When you're there, you're trying to make up for lost time and feeling guilty for one reason or another - but being together is always indescribably good. Great vlog!

I used to feel very very guilty, but as time and the country have progressed, at least with my family, my cousins have better lives than their sisters in America who don't get to take vacations and they barely get to see each other. I mean, I haven't been able to do a trip like this with my cousins in America and there's a lot less of us. Thanks for watching the video and for the comment.

Vung Tau at 2 am. As a univerisity student in my home country and almost an anti-foodie (I can eat the same thing every evening), I never understood the need for ethnic food. Until I had a power adapter blow out at 2 am in the morning (POW!), got a bout of insomnia and walked out on the main street at 2 am in the morning for "western" breakfast cereal and milk!

I move to the states at 8 years of age. Ever since then, I lost connection and relationships with my family from Vietnam. My family from Vietnam assume that ever since we moved to the US, our life have become perfect with lots of money. The fact is that we struggle as immigrants and work our ass off to build a stable life in the US. The irony is that my family in Vietnam is probably more well off then us in the states. After watching your video, I miss that family connection and interaction I once had.

Thanks for sharing. Like I said in the video, it's very difficult to understand each other unless you walk in their shoes and experience their lives. I try not to focus on that so much with my relatives and just spend time with them getting to know them better whenever I get the chance. If you miss it, consider one day visiting them and inviting them somewhere. Maybe that connection will rekindle. Thanks for watching and for sharing your story.

A great idea to have a family get-together in such a lovely place. It's hard to imagine they can sell all of the seafood available in the fish markets. I would love to attend a sea food feast. We used to have family gatherings in New Hampshire in the summers. So many fond memories. I hope you get to have a few more before everyone goes separate ways.

Big difference between Viets and Americans: Americans would maybe cook once at the villa. But Viet families will fully occupy and take advantage of seafood offerings. For Viets, the luxury comes in having staff that will clean up before, after, and even in the middle. The cooking is not a chore.

In which year did you go to the US then, Kyle? My grandparents (maternal side) have settled in CA since they left VN in 1994 under the policy called HO which was meant for army veterans. Long story short, my grandfather worked as a translator and police officer in the US army before 1975 and he was my first English teacher when he was still in Vietnam. I was about 6 in 1994 when my grandparent left for the US. Unfortunately, my family was left in Vietnam because the HO policy did not cover children who had their own families, that's why my family couldn't go. Just 2 uncles and 1 aunt were allowed to go with my grandparents because they were still single then. Fast forward to 2005, my grandparents had their first trip back to VN - that's 10 years since they left. As for life in VN in the 90s, it was with lots of struggles, I believe you can tell too. VN economy did not take off until 2000 when more families could get themselves TVs, and motorbikes (mostly Honda). It came as no surprise that my family did not have access to electricity until 2001. Telling you all this is like taking a trip down memory lane. I miss those hard but beautiful times because it's part of my childhood, my formative years. I can relate so much to all the family content videos you've made. Thanks for the video, Kyle. I am happy that you are finding your way back to your family root here in VN. God bless you and have a nice day. Trong

Wonderful video, which kinda hits different for people with similar family stories, I think. I am in my 30s now and my parents are boat people from the 70s and I was born in germany as the youngest of the family. I always felt some kind of disconnection between even my siblings, which were born in south Vietnam. I have a shitton of cousins in Saigon and I can and probably will never be able to connect with them in a proper way. Everytime I am able to visit them I am just the weird viet kieu cousin which only speaks funny "old" vietnamese taught by his parents which kind of lived in a time bubbled Vietnam 40+ years ago, at least in their minds/memories. The way of living and thinking is totally different. As you said, some of my cousins do even better than my relatives in germany or america in terms of family connection/bond, because they are too busy for it. The set value of it is not the same as for many viet kieu in europe/america I know. I am in Vietnam right now and will go back in a few days, being able to spend some weeks here after the whole covid situation feels great. Also thanks for your videos! I have been watching them for years and just recently started to watch your channel again with my new account. Keep it up! I am looking forward for new videos.
