I grew up with a disabled dad. He was 54 when I was born, so most of my life he was also elderly. My parents divorced when I was 9, and he was my primary caregiver from then on. We had incredible times together and his impact on my life has been invaluable. Like if I got to go back in time and choose a "normal dad" or the one I had, I would pick my dad 1000x over. Shane is correct, parenting is about what you have to offer a child, and care + wisdom + humor go such a long way! You guys will adapt and be incredible, I'm sure of it! Thanks for sharing your journey 🙂

Wish the assholes that leave those shitty comments could even comprehend such a statement but their closed 🧠 prob think 💭 thats impossible, yeah right, etc. but thats because their parents missed the mark on some very important life lessons! Cheers to Shane & Hannah! Y'all will both equally make great parents and I'm excited to watch your journey!

That’s not all it takes to be a dad. If you aren’t changing diapers and doing physical things, that means that someone else has to.
@tekokako1
@tekokako1 2 жыл бұрын
Yep that’s right! If you can’t change diapers or do physical things someone else has to do it. So you’re kinda saying if you can’t breast feed your baby you can’t be a mother Because something else needs to feed your baby. Not being able to do physical things does not stop you being a mom or a dad.

Ok, here's my reasoning about why you two SHOULD have kids: you both have such a wonderful sense of humor, you're both tender hearted, patient, good looking, and your babies will be beautiful, you're both so intelligent, and Shane can read to the babies, keep them company, prepare food, take them for walks, etc. Later, the kids can help Hannah around the house, and help with their dad, should he need it. You kids have all of the babies you want! ❤

As a postpartum doula I have worked with endless amounts of babies who were conceived that way- one was born yesterday and everyone’s journey is so different . One thing that has helped all of them on their journey- is joining an IVF support group. Sara Pace therapy host one online and she is absolutely fantastic. She also does private sessions . I've had arthritis since I was 11. When I was 14, my aunt told me I should think about not having children just in case it was hereditary. I was deeply offended. I wasn't diagnosed until I was 14, and I struggled a lot with the diagnosis. Being told I would've been better off not being born didn't help. I have a daughter now, and her father is mostly only financially involved. It wasn't a huge deal not having him there to change diapers etc. What's the hardest is being in it by myself. Dealing with college applications, career choice advice. Shane can be a good father in the truly important ways.

I am on the other side of IVF (kind of) and 14 weeks pregnant through ICSI, so I've been through all the invasive tests and all that and I totally understand the anxiety. It can be a lot to handle for sure, but if you take it one step at a time rather than looking forward to allllll the things you'll have to do, it makes it easier. Also, joining online support groups has been really helpful for me in feeling less isolated, since nobody I knew personally had ever gone through anything like this and couldn't necessarily understand the process without me having to explain the same things over and over. Anyway, you got this! And fwiw, I think you both seem like lovely people that any kid would be lucky to have as parents. 💜

Shane and Hannah, my son has CP and is a fully involved father while being in an electric wheel chair. He has 2 college degrees, works full time, has a great wife, and is the parent of our grandchild. My dream is to have a child, like i almost live for it, and i feel like i am 10x more conscious of making sure this will not affect any potential future children. The chance is extremely minimal. As someone who is also wheelchair bound I love yalls love story and so happy yall are on this journey to have a baby. Shane will be an amazing dad! But i also want to say it comes with its own downfalls and a lot of the time hannah might feel like a single mom when it comes to carrying the most responsibility and care of the child since shane cant actually feed them, put them to bed, help you latch them on, bathe them, help hold them down and comfort them while you get thier snot out or give them medicine and so much more on top of shanes care as well. The big things are gnna be all on her and thats a lot. Having a baby in general is tolling on a relationship even a good one but especially when the care isnt equal. This isnt to say he wont be a good dad just that its something real to consider and plan for. Not to mention Post P and overal burnout after a baby is hard on a mom often they need assistance to rest and save energy. Its important to change the stigma against disabled parents but is also impotant to be realistic about the challenges. Just hope theres a plan 💗 praying IVF works for yall

OMG the Hypothetical Freaks game -- my husband and I do the same thing (but don't call it that lol). I always had bad anxiety and for me "role playing" every bad scenario helps me feel prepared for anything bad that could occur. So before a scary appointment, event, new situation, etc, we always just sit down and talk about every bad scenario and what I would do if something like that happened. Then when the scary thing happens, I feel better prepared for any bad/unexpected occurance.

Shane as a dad…dad jokes taken to the millionth power! 😂😂😂 You guys really will be amazing parents. I can’t wait to see you guys embark on this journey. As for Hannah being “overwhelmed…” Uh. I’m perfectly able bodied and have zero disabilities. I have 1 son. Age 13. I’m regularly overwhelmed. THAT’S PARENTING! It’s effing exhausting! But it’s also incredibly rewarding and I wouldn’t change it for the world. *I can’t wait for Shane to roll over to the baby and be like, Hannah, it’s doing it again….” Hannah runs over and the baby is like sleeping… 😂😒 So helpful. Lol Enjoy the ride, guys. It’s freaking hell…and awesome!

I am a disabled woman. I had four kids before I was disabled but still have two at home now and had three at hone when I became disabled. I can say life is more complicated by my disability but my kids are so worth it and they are not mad at me for passing on bad genes. I didn't know about my genetic condition until after I had them and they all have my condition. But we feel grateful that I had my diagnoses so they know what can happen and how to live a healthier lifestyle and take precautions against injuries so they might not end up in a wheelchair like me but even if they do, they know it is manageable and still worth living a full life. Children are a blessing and even fully abled couples or singles need help with their kids. It takes a village is very accurate. I hope your dreams come true and you are blessed.

So excited for this new journey of yours!

Being a parent is such a blessing. I’ve watched you guys for a while now and I can tell just from listening to you guys and seeing the expressions on your faces when talking about having a family, that you will both be such wonderful parents. The only thing people should be worried about is whether a child is properly cared for, and that’s not even a concern with you guys because it’s obvious your kids would have everything they need. Thinking of you and wishing you the best along your IVF journey🧡

I love you both and how much you love each other. You are teaching and trying to teach the truth to people. You are more responsible than most people when it comes to having children. I was verbally abused by my mother, from grade school to 35 (I'm 53) when she died. I don't miss her or her abuse and losing my Gram (her Mom) at 40 was really hard because she always liked me along with loving me. I wouldn't be here without all her love for me my kids and my husband. My sons and 5-year-old granddaughter are my proudest accomplishments. They are all great humans. We were not perfect parents but always tried our best to love them. I wish you both all the luck with becoming parents! Thanks so much for sharing your lives.

OMG I was just talking about this the other day in reference to your relationship. It is so the norm to have the mother's expected to be the primary caregiver in heterosexual relationships, and these guys saying awful things in the comments (who, lets be real, more than likely carry that expectation themselves) are now trying to act like it's not fair to Hannah that Shane won't be doing more? I would rather go into an interabled relationship that I chose, knowing that I (with the help of family/nannies of course) would be doing more of my child's caregiving than my partner because they simply aren't able to do so, than be stuck in one of those awful relationships with a guy who isn't disabled but still expects me to do the bulk of the childcare simply because I'm a woman.

My husband (able-bodied) and I (disabled from birth) have 3 lovely children, now adults. I was a stay-at-home mom, we raised them ourselves. We did have family support, but we mostly were on our own. They all survived, none of them have my disability, and I find that they are more compassionate and empathetic to other people. My middle child (daughter, 21) told me recently she was out with some friends at a diner and she saw this elderly man struggling with the door and getting his wife's wheelchair in. She said she jumped up to help and got the chair over the threshold and the man thanked her and was impressed with her ability to know what to do. She chuckled and told him her mom's in a wheelchair, so she's used to it. He told her she was raised right.
