@@NukeMarine True. But even though Dominique Tipper nailed her role, I was always kind of disappointed by the casting. Naomi would obviously have been a nightmare to cast accuracetely to the books, you'd need like a 6'7'' woman of mixed African and Asian ethnicity. I'm not sure that that actress does even exist, let alone if she would be up to the role. But if they had somehow found someone like that, I think it would have been an interesting dynamic, especially in a visual medium like TV, to have Naomi cuddling with her short king James 😂

Something I haven't really seen people address with HBO's Dunk and Egg series is that finally there is going to be a working class character in the lead role in a Game of Thrones show. Which is good and important because that perspective has been pretty absent from these shows aside from side characters like Davos and Mysaria. Something that's disturbed me over the years with the casual GOT audience is how nonchalant some people are with the mistreatment of the peasants in defense of the nobility in the shows. Like people justifying Daenerys destroying Kingslanding and killing hundreds of people because "they cheered when Ned died" as if the average commoner is in the loop of actual news going in behind closed doors. Or more recently the nonchalant response of Rhaenys trampling over dozens of people with her dragon and potentially defending the Blacks in HOTD season 2 who attack Green held villages over the basis of justifying Rhaenyra's vengeance. So now with having Dunk as a poor himbo dude in the lead role, viewers can be more aware of GRRM's criticism of the nobility being able to do whatever they want in his world and that the commoners matter too as people.

You can also add Criston’s background as barely one step above a commoner before he was catapulted into living with the 1% of Westerosi society to that. You can like or dislike him overall still, but the fact that he was born so much lower on the social ladder than the majority of our characters and how that informs his sense of honour and himself is basically never taken into account when analysing his character leading to so many people misattributing his motivations. The perspectives of the aristocratic characters are the only ones given any credence, and I don’t think most people are even aware of how much that bias effects them when they talk about the show or the world these characters exist in.

Like when Egg talks about how bastards are naturally bad people but Dunk points out that he himself is probably a bastard which makes Egg rethink his viewpoint. And saying things like the average peasant isnt that knowledge of court politics and who made laws that benefited them but they should be respected nonetheless. Making Egg into a more nuanced person as he grew up

Peter Claffey is 6'4, which would make him tall for Westeros considering Gwendoline Christie was 6'3 and we had no problem believing her height was comparable to the Hound's whose actor was at 6'5. Another thing is yes, Dunk was insecure. That doesn't mean his actor can't be attractive. I always took it as him being a tall, good-looking, insecure and humgle guy thanks to the Old Man's teachings. It makes sense when you figure he's got a few descendants running around Game of Thrones and these women develop crushes on him. It's his personality for the most part but I never took it as meaning he wasn't exactly that good looking either.

Looking him up! Peter Claffey is 1.96 meters tall, or about 6 feet 4 and a half inches. He's originally a professional rugby player and was signed with Connacht Rugby before he decided to change career paths and started training at Bow Street Academy! I think they could do something with camera angles? Or even putting some sort of wedge in his costume shoes to make him even taller? He'd especially look giant next to Dunk?

Seems like some more quality casting from HBO , though tbd. Relative unknowns who seem to look the parts is their usual M.O. The actor playing Egg especially so , right age , look and from what i've seen he's a very precocious lad which should work very well for Egg. And the height with the Dunk actor i was near certain was going to be 6'4" / 6'5". Especially next to a young small male actor so often on screen , and still likely considerably taller than the rest of the cast (which HBO should make extra sure of). Plus its near impossible to find a 7 foot tall actor who looks the part and has the acting range and ability as one of the leads of a major HBO series. Plus 6'4" that ideal range to be taller than most of the cast and still potentially quite mobile and agile compared to many as you get taller than that. Just gets even harder to find someone super super tall who is built the right way and can be as physical and athletic as a role like Dunk will require. And the relative unknowns , up and coming , often transitioning from stage to screen route has worked very well for HBO in this universe thus far. We should expect HBO to mix in some more recognizable faces into the wider cast as they tend to do (though likely nowhere near superstars), especially with so many iconic characters on offer in these novellas.

Tbf I think it can be pretty easy to make someone look huge in armour.I remember thinking Richard Madden looked pretty big in seasons 1 and 2 just because of his shoulder pads. I know Dunk won't always be in armour but there are other tricks they can do. The actor is also an ex-rugby player so I'm sure he will look imposing. I'm not worried.

A lot of screentime can be given to other points of view, such as the other Targs in the story. Remember in GOT when whole scenes like the coin flip scene were given to characters like Daario and the Second Sons, etc. Lots of space to fill.

Thank God they didn’t race or gender swap the protagonists. The guy playing Dunk seems to be 6'4, almost 6'5; he is tall enough. I’m also of the opinion that they will give Aemon some screen time, as the scene in GoT in which he remembers Egg while he is dying is just too melancholic and cute to not make something out of their relationship. Honestly, this show has more potential in my opinion than HOTD. Far more grounded, shorter and more focused on the human aspect instead of just being lore porn with dragons.

Dunk is supposed to be the answer to "What if Conan the Barbarian was a good and chivalrous knight?" It's the reversal of the David vs. Goliath trope, where the gigantic man is actually the good guy for once. I hope they use tricks to make Claffey appear even taller than he is.

How do they make a season out of any one of those books without turning them into the monstrosity that was The Hobbit trilogy. Now, two books could make a season and that leaves She Wolves to be the second half of season two. On the other hand, padding (well world expanding) can lead to something cool. They could do the super audacious and pivot House of the Dragon to tackle the Blackfyre Rebellion via time jumps that end up using the same support actors from Dunk and Egg but earlier in their timeline. Something like how Better Call Saul pulled off.

Fan casting for Dunk: Harris Dickinson. His portrayal of Bill Farrah in AMATEOTW had such Dunk vibes. I don't particularly think height is as big of a deal as it may be made out to be. With movie magic, LotR was able to make typical actors look like dwarves compared to Ian McKellen. Tom Cruise is also infamously shorter than he appears in movies. A couple of inches in a TV medium isn't a big deal.

I don’t recall Theon being described as especially good-looking, but regardless, Alfie Alan definitely doesn’t qualify as just an “average looking man.” If he is? 90% of dudes may as well go ahead and give up now.
