from the sounds of it, Tom is using auric armour gold, which is a layer paint so it's deliberately thinner and will need more coats to build up a solid finish rather than retributor armour which is a base paint and will give a solid opaque coverage in a single coat.

To do any metallic you have to start with a black undercoat and start with a citadel base metallic, (Balthazar for a darker gold/brassy look - Retribution for a brighter gold) then go to a citadel layer paint to bring it to where you want it. Layer paints have less pigment so they are easier to blend but don't cover well from a totally different color.

My White Scars successor army I paint using citadel paint almost all metallic silver and gold. Citadel has fantastic metallic paints you just need to know how to apply them. Retributor is by far the best gold base to start with it's a great mid gold with just two layers so you can make it brighter with lighter golds like Auric Armor or darker with a shade like Reikland Fleshshade. Which I'll usually do both, I'll give it two to three thin coats of Retributor gold then apply a highlight of Auric Gold then thin it down and apply it like a glaze over the rest of the gold where the highlights on the main part of the armor would be then in the recesses and the corners I'll trace Reikland Fleshshade to give it contrast and make the brighter parts pop.

So like middle of high school me and my step brother end up in a hobby shop, like planes and trains type because the owner sold old comic books so we would go and dig in the bins. We kept seeing these cool models in a display case at the counter and found similar boxes and blisters in a small corner. We went home and got onto gw website, the old one that had artwork and lore descriptions of each unit and spent hours scouring the site. A week or so later I was at a book store and saw a book with the same logo and bought it, Death World - a catacahn novel. I read the whole thing that night and the next day went to the hobby store and bought the old metal Catachan snipers and like 6 paints. I still have never collected them as a whole army but really want to. I have the snipers boxed away somewhere.

For gold. Use the Vallejo Metal Colors line. The ones that come in the bigger then a dropper bottle. They're GREAT. Wonderful coverage. You're welcome
