Well, it had to happen at some point, right? We had our first breakdown during our full time RV living adventure! The day that Rae was going to drive for the very first time... this happened 😱! All things considered though, we're pretty lucky!

Who is Getaway Couple?
We're Rae and Jason! In July 2017, we downsized from a three bedroom house in Los Angeles to a 400 square foot fifth wheel to travel the United States. We've decided to document our journey from the beginning to show you the ups and downs of this lifestyle. It's been a tough start but definitely rewarding! We just purchased a Grand Design Reflection 303rls and will be picking it up Friday. We'll be in your shoes here shortly. Our first experience towing a 5th wheel, although it's about 10 feet shorter than yours.

We have a saying. Use it. Break it. Fix it. Welcome to the club! You'll get use to parking lot camping. It's not so bad. We've had several breakdowns over the years. The worse was when we broke a leaf spring on the trailer coming down a steep narrow twisting mountain road in Colorado. We were blessed to have a pull out ( on the other side of the road). When you break a leaf spring, the trailer falls onto the tire making it useless. My husband literally drug the trailer into the pull out. We unhitched & drove into town. Of course it was a Sunday. We managed to find a guy who jerry- rigged our rig & we limped it to his house/garage. He allowed us to camp in his front yard while he made a new leaf spring. We were back on the road withing 2 days!

That’s amazing that you found someone like that! Is it still going strong from this guys handiwork? We’ve heard leaf spring horror stories. Which is why we’d love to upgrade ours but not sure how quickly that will happen. So glad to hear you guys made it out safely, what an experience 😰.

That leaf spring held great for the remainder of our ownership of that 5th wheel. Several years later, the other side went...of course mountain driving. Highly recommend upgrading them sooner than later. We are very careful not to over load the trailer. When breakdowns happen, we have been blessed that we have always been safe & no bodily injury had occurred. Always remind yourself that when things happen.

So what happens is the bearing on the pulley goes out and it puts the pulley up at an angle and it allows the belt to walk off the pulley and that's your water pump failure. If your belt comes off again grab the water pump pulley and if it has any kind of play in it then you know it's bad I just went through that on my 2000 Ram once the belt breaks you'll get a check gages light and you'll lose your power steering your water pump, your charging system all that you'll have to pull over in a safe spot and shut it down

We have been following you almost from the beginning and have a couple truck specific questions. I have a 2011.5 Ram 3500 dually with the high output 6.7 cummins. We have towed about 4k per year every year since the truck was new, and have 89K on it now. I was wondering if you have the 4.10 or the 3.73 rear end and if you have the 68rfe 6 speed transmission and how it is performing for you. My wife and I are about to hit the road and plan to travel 7 months of the year and put more than 20K miles on a year. We pull a 40ft Montana so I was wondering if you have had any issues with the truck having put more miles on it and taking it in more diverse terrain than we have till now. Thanks for the work you do.

I once took a vaca day on Friday to get early start on a late season bow hunting trip wife and I was gonna take. Spent all Thursday evening after work filling water tanks, icechest, food gear etc etc so we could wake up at 630am and leave out at 7am. We got up, dressed and jumped in truck and click, click, click. Truck wouldn't start! I was thinking ok, maybe I left a light on packing. Check voltage and it's a hot battery. Ummm I ln starting to panic. After working on it 30 minutes I come to the realization that my starter just crapped out on me the morning of my last trip of the year. I ended up having to unpack everything I just loaded, unhook trailer and get it ready for tow truck. I was pretty upset I burned a day of vaca for nothing, missing our last chance of year to go hunting, and also blow $1000-2000 on a starter. But every one was like yeah that sucks but at least you broke down in your own driveway and not in middle of the woods. So yeah I have been there, good living I guess!

My wife and I stick to the credo “If it’s gonna happen, it’s gonna happen out there” (from the Captain Ron movie). However maintenance on our tow vehicle is of prime importance. And we have travelled at night, in the rain. Kinda sneaks up on you in winter when it gets dark so early. We use walkie-talkies and she guides me around obstacles in tight spaces, especially at night, in the rain. Regardless of the hour we slow things down when parking our travel trailer. Deep breaths! God bless.
@GetawayCouple
@GetawayCouple 6 жыл бұрын
We definitely took it slow, that's for sure! I felt much safer sleeping in the parking lot rather than trying to find a spot and back in at night. I think we're going to have to rewatch the Captian Ron movie! Jason's only seen it once and Rae has never seen it.

Break downs happen. Stay positive because we've experience the same with our new ford dually. Hang in there and maybe look into a ford dually..joking but my girlfriend has the same aniexty issues as well. When something isn't right, she'll let me know. Communicate. Its hard for me, cuz i want to do everything for us. I need to work on that. Remind each other that u both wont be where u are without each other. Took the family to Alaska and back on the Alcan Highway. On the way back we stopped at Muncho Lake in Northern British Columbia. Made a hard u-turn in their large parking lot and headed south for about 4 hours. Pulled into a campground in the middle of nowhere and noticed one of the wheels was missing on our 30' trailer. Closest town was about 75 miles away. Spent the next day hunting down parts and finally found another wheel and brake hub for about 230 dollars. Fixed the rig and back on the road. Priced the parts in the states after getting home and it would have cost me less than 100 dollars. Another family adventure in the books.

Our first major blowout was on I-4 just before Orlando 5 p.m. on a Friday night. We had the driver side front tire of the fifth wheel blow and completely took out the floor under my refrigerator all of our electrical and part of the outside panel of the fifth wheel we did not get help until 9 p.m. when the state patrol came to help not one towing company would help us. When it all came down to it we paid her $250 deductible on a $7,000 bill to repair.

Something my wife and I found very helpful when it comes to backing the rig is to use walkie-talkies. This really removed the tense moments we had from not hearing each other correctly. We learned this from LoLoHo.
@GetawayCouple
@GetawayCouple 6 жыл бұрын
Hey there! We did have walkie talkies but we couldn't understand each other. We moved to our cell phones (we have blue tooth in the truck so Jason is hands free still) which helped a lot more. We struggled with communicating what needed to be done for awhile but I finally think we're getting the hang of that. Now I just tell him drivers side, passengers side, and straight back. Those three terms have helped a lot!

"I couldn't sleep at all last night. Just a'thinking of towing...everything was alright...well I was tossin' and turnin', tossing and turning all night... Jumped out of bed, pulled up the shades. Went downstairs, it was the middle of the night... oh yeah, yeah yeah yeah, sing it sister..." And, the most important maintenance items are: ALL fluids and filters, oil, diesel fuel, transmission, coolant, differential, power steering, brake fluid - change them ALL regularly per manual. Next is belts and hoses. Change them ALL about every 4-5 years. Then tires. No matter the tread depth, it's the age of tires!! Change them if 6 years old. Do it.

Getaway Couple not really. You just get used to it. Plus Ive driven semi trucks before for a living. But I’m sure you know how everything feels and sounds whe your driving. But I just keep an eye out for those marker lights. Even I sway slightly to see them. Then as for set up or backing in you need signals you both agree on. And maybe even some walkie talkies. But again you know what your doing. It just looks different. I have an charger that I drive. Used to drive me battery that I could not see the sky out of the windshield without crouching down. Till I realized that I did not need to. Just what was in front of me not above me. So as long as your have your guide not to back into anything. Just do the same as you do in the daylight.

Lost a couple few belts over years. It just goes bang. Not like a tire so no pulling in a direction. Now that is a scary few moments. But first no power steering. Then starts overheating. Hopefully the belt doesn’t tear up anything else. You have a short period to find a spot to pull over. And then its a tow truck unless your in spot and it didn’t tear up anything else to do yourself but unless that happened close to home, that option is usually out. I had one close to home and it was only the belt. me and my friend fixed. Next time, years later, broke on secondary roads made it to a parking lot and that was maybe a 1/2 mile. Shut off right off in lot. Could see that the alternator wheel was gone. Bolt had broke and there it went and so did belt. That wasn’t cheap. Last one 2 yrs ago. Lost power steering (pump quit) was only 10 blocks from gas station that I use....so yep tried to make it, I’m not making this up ...on way the city decided that day to pave part of that road that was a straight shot to gas station so had to divert 3 blocks over and then again and then all most there.....Boom..goes belt...overheats and pull in CVS.... 2 blocks from gas station... 3 hrs to get tow truck to go 2 blocks...100 bucks then get belt fixed and new steering pump... Not that one sucked.......... So good job keeping good attitude. I was so mad I was was laughing.... until the bill.....LOL.... Yes when we get started I will not be hitting the spots after dark , I hope..... Keep up the great job.....

Well you definitely lucked out with the belt breaking in the campground. Having your truck (its not a car) and fifth wheel towed from the side of the road somewhere would have been 10 times as stressful. I too believe that the water pump caused the belt to break. As they start to go bad they drag on the belt as its spinning until it eventually snaps. I lost one while driving before and it was loud but no other damage. Glad you two came out of it okay. Looking forward to where you will be next. Safe travels.

Yes, we did! So happy it happened there and not while Rae was towing. It was definitely the water pump, we're just bummed it wasn't covered in the recall RAM had. That's great when yours snapped it didn't cause any other damage, could have been costly. Thanks for the positivity 👍

Hey you two, on KZbin Ram has a recall on water pump seizures which could have broke that belt. If it's part of the recall, Ram should reimburse you for the repair. Just keep the old pump and belt for proof. Look on KZbin under Ram water pump recall or call a dealer (service department).

Our 2005 Dodge had a slave cylinder failure while towing. At the top of passes, while towing the 5th wheel, the clutch pedal would no longer disengage the clutch. Fortunately, I would be in a lower gear anyway and just proceed down using the exhaust brake to control speed and once the slave cylinder cooled, it would sometimes work. If not, matching engine speed did work. In California, we had it towed to the dealer and I told them that the slave cylinder was not working when the engine had been working hard. Eight days later, they tell me that it turned out to be the slave cylinder. Duh... I hate dealers...

We've broken down three times on various trips (not fulltimers yet...). Had to replace a distributor on one trip, a fuel pump on another. But, our most memorable was a blown tranny just outside of Bullhead City, Arizona. Just on the edge of town is this campground (Davis Camp Park) that hugs the Colorado River. As we are driving by, Teri says "Oh that is beautiful, we should stay there sometime." Three minutes later, one of the kids says "Is that smoke?" Why yes. Yes it is. I pulled over, stepped out of the van and stared forlornly at the creek of transmission fluid meandering down the side of the highway. So, we were able to stay at that beautiful campground that Miss Teri so longed to stay at, for three days. And it only cost us $1500. So now, Teri is forbidden to mention any nice looking campgrounds while we are traveling. She can take pictures and bring it up in conversation later when we are set up at camp, but she must never, never voice her opinion while we are on the journey. I actually prefer to drive in the dark. When the kids were growing up, we actually started several trips just before sundown.

Oh my goodness, we were both laughing so hard at your story. We're so sorry it cost so much and that happened to you but your storytelling is hilarious 😂I'm guessing Teri will never live down jinxing the transmission.

Sorry to hear you broke down, that stinks, I bought a new 2016 F350 SRW Crew Cab SB 6.7PSD just so I wouldn't have some of those issues but it doesn't matter they all have issues. if you want your money back you may have a claim. on every ram truck there is a build date, just because you have a 2012 does not mean you did not get 2013 parts. the recall pump(wp) has no weep hole on the bottom like all other wp. write a letter to ram explaining what happened and they may reimburse you. then they will pay the dealer about half what they charged you. i bought an extra pump for my ram for $250 + belt $ 100 = $350. they use the same coolant over again unless you included a flush.

Rae, it really is easy to tow. It is intimidating at first but the more you do it the easier it becomes. You don't have to be a big burly guy. Ever watch Pippi Peterson? She does it by herself. When you find yourself with some extra time, go in a big parking lot and practice. It is good in case of emergencies as well. What if Jason was injured and you HAD to drive? Remember...'YOU CAN DOO EEEEEEET!"

As a fellow Dodge Diesel owner witha high mileage truck, there are some simple things to Carry that can help out in a bind, fuel filer (tools to change the filter) serp belt, water pump, belt idler pulley and belt tensioner.

We loooved Orlando! We're so happy it happened in a park as well. Staying in a park one more day was way better than being stuck on the side of the freeway on Easter Sunday! Thanks for the encouragement and positive words, appreciate that!

Too funny, we name our Solitude Sully! From Monster's Inc. My husband has always liked that name. He actually wanted to name our dog, if we ever got a huge one, Sully. So since the Solitude is such a big monster, that is how we came up with Sully. Great name!

Aww I love that! It fits perfect with being a big monster lol. You should paint it blue 😂

So glad that didn't happen to Rae while she was towing for the first time! If it had to happen, that was the best possible scenario. BTW, love Jason's hat. Go Hawks!

Yes, we're so glad it didn't happen that way either! Being stuck in the RV park for one more day was a WAY better situation than being stuck on the side of the freeway on Easter Sunday. And Jason says Go Hawks!!!

Nothing worse than a break down, but stuff happens. I personal don’t like traveling at night, like to be in camp spot before it gets dark. Love to videos and the bloopers, keep them coming and most important, safe travels.

Thanks, Joe! Yeah, I think we will stick to our regular routine of driving and setting up camp during the day. Kudos to those who can do it at night though! Happy (and safe) travels to you as well 👍

Yeah, I mean we have a fifth wheel so it can't really breakdown (besides having a blowout). Considering we're full time RVers and this was a moving day, I count this as our first recreational vehicle breakdown. Didn't mean to cause any confusion!

lol please don't call the KZbin cops on me! We're full time RVers and this was a moving day, I count this as our first recreational vehicle breakdown.

Haha. No cops called. We have a Grand Design as well and I was hoping it wasn’t the RV. Tow Vehicle breakdown is an idea for next time (hopefully there won’t be one!!)

Yeah, thankfully the parking lot was empty and we could just cruise around to find the best spot to get out of in the morning. Probably will be sticking to our norm of not driving or parking at night lol.

Lol Bernice is original for a truck? We're really not loving "Soli" for the trailer since we've started noticing other folks who have a Solitude calling theirs that too! Any suggestions?
