From what I understand APC was the brainchild of Tool's guitar tech Billy Howerdell. Billy approached Maynard with some material that Maynard penned some lyrics for and APC was born. This track is from 13th Step their second album. Try the Outsider by these guys or By and Down, both are amazing. There is a lot of great material here, I hope you guys keep digging. Along with Puscifer, APC gives Maynard a whole different creative outlet. Thanks for posting. More Steven Wilson and Maynard, yes please!

Funny how nobody mentionned their last album in the previous comments... ok, "Mer de Noms" is the best album released in 2000 for me... yes, "Thirteen Steps" is close to be as amazing as the previous one, and that was a challenge. But guys, don't miss "Eat the Elephant", their more recent gift to us. This album is... is... is... I cannot find the words to give it justice. A piece of art, for sure. Peace !

Yes feathers is the most beautiful song. The way his voice carries the note at the end of every line just crushes me. I find it hard to breathe when I listen to that song full blast.

The track title immediately made me think of Passenger from Deftones. Maybe something you'd dig, too. Who knows. I believe Maynard sings backup on that particular Deftones track, as well. Another band that Maynard heads up is Puscifer. Must admit I haven't yet given Puscifer a lot of time. A Perfect Circle tracks to check: The Hollow ( a first track... from their first album), Rose, Judith, Thinking Of You, Gravity. I need to spend some time on their later albums.

I think what you’re trying to say about a more “simplistic” metal..or ”slow” metal, is that it induces almost a trance feel....hypnotic, repetitive rhythm. This is heavily present in North African, Middle Eastern music. For myself, it is my favorite form of rock and metal...I love to lose myself in the trance vibe. YES! You just said Porcupine Tree. Spot On.....Also a bit of Pineapple Thief. Taking it back to the 70’s, that same hypnotic beat and vibe is to be found in, for instance, When The Levee Breaks by Zeppelin....or Bridge of Sighs by Robin Trower. In the sixties, While May Guitar Gently Weeps has that repetitive, slow, hypnotic beat.

Loved your Spot On Insights !!! For me the Song evokes a Deliciously Grungy Darkness. The Vocals give one a feeling of Honest Desperation. The guitar and Percussion are Perfectly balanced with the singer And don't overpower. The riffs and flourishes add Depth to the beautifully morose tone of the song. Love and Thanks Ken

this whole album was about addiction and destructive patterns, the "13th Step" being a quip arising from the 12 step community in which an addict falls back into old behavior. i think Maynard made a joke in an interview once about the album title, saying that when he was younger, he had fallen off the 13th step and messed himself up. I think he was making a reference to when you're young, narcissistic, and maybe imbibing all these intoxicating substances that reinforce your bad behavior, you just keep repeating the same cycle over and over. It's also commonly thought that a gallows has 13 steps. The 13th trump card of the Tarot is Death. Both Tool and APC seem to be pretty pro-psychedelic in the sense that it can be used for empowerment and self-realization, but also advocating for caution, moderation, etc. Finally, with all this in mind, "The Package" can be seen as networking and using people purely for the sake of getting "the package" e.g. a fix for withdrawals

I LOVE 70's prog, but I never understand with modern prog why they need to mix super-heavy heavy metal in with it. I don't think the two genres go together. And ironically, Rush, who are often dubbed one of the main forefathers of prog metal, weren't really metal (more hard rock) and were light years above this stuff.

This isn’t metal, this IS the hard rock of early 2000s. Generations of music change and evolve. While it may be heavier than Rush’s hard rock of the day, it fits right in with that decade’s hard rock mix.

@@robdaniel3211 whatever you call it, it's not even close to being in the same league as Rush or 70's prog, and I've rarely ever heard a modern prog album that could hold a candle to the 70's stuff, except for the odd throwback band like Anglagard and Astra.

More Yes please. People will tell you to do Close To The Edge, but being a Yes fan since the 80's, I believe that if you want to listen to a 20 minute song, Gates Of Delirium is much better than Close To The Edge. If you want to hear progressive Yes taken to it's most chaotic and clashing, Close to the Edge is the way to go, but Gates of Delirium has a better melody, I think. Even better, do the whole album (Relayer)...it only has three songs, and all three are so different, and so awesome. For a shorter foray into the Yes sound, I suggest And You And I, which I think it Yes' most beautiful song. Also, someday you should check out Leave It, which prominently features their vocal skills.

OMG, the German and Spanish was awesome! Alas, this is the latest chapter of failed attempts to get me into modern progressive rock. With very rare exception (Radiohead, Sigur Ros and a few throwback bands like Anglagard and Astra), I'm PURELY a 70's prog rock fan. They usually lose me with the vocals style and lyrics, and I never understand the need to verge into heavy metal. I mean, I love Rush to death (fave band of all time), but they didn't need to devolve into super crunchy heavy metal riffs or growly vocals. I have nothing against heavy metal, but I just don't think it really goes with prog - it seems a little more pedestrian than prog and brings the creativity down too much for me by going for the easier metal riffs. That said, I liked the instrumental beginning section. Anyway, still always fun to watch you guys!

Gorgon, don't give up ! You miss too much good music if you stay with the 70s. I also grew up on Genesis, Pink Floyd, ELP, my favourite german prog band Eloy, made my way through the 80s with Rush, throught the 90s with Dream Theater, but after 2005 I discovered so many newer prog bands with beautiful songs. Just try RPWL - 3 lights or Silenced, Riverside with Second live syndrome, Blind Ego - Leave, Sylvan - Vapour Trail, Soen - Koniskas/Ennui, Fuchs - When you close your eyes, Mostly Autumn, my album of 2019, the song Western skies. Don't do like my friend Karsten, he speaks about Genesis of the Gabriel era all the time, how boring, 7 days of the week the same music, I don't want to eat the same every day.... and my album of 2021 is by the band Wheel - Resident human, 50 minutes of great music .... one new song per day, keeps the frustration away :-) have fun

@@rudolfbecker4313 I appreciate where you're coming from, and I know in your mind you're the lighthouse shining the beacon of light and truth for my wayward boat to sail to, but I've had this conversation dozens of times, and every time I've tried and said, ok, lay it on me, I like almost none of it. I tried Riverside and really hated them. Mostly Autumn did nothing for me. The others I haven't, but I've tried tons of others. In the end, for me it's about numbers. I still have a TON of 60's and 70's bands and albums to discover, and my success rate with them is fairly decent - anywhere from 10 to 20 percent (give or take) I like or love, vs. 1/10th of 1 percent of modern stuff, if I'm lucky. I have to play the odds. I have too much great music still to discover from the eras I know I love for me to spend time digging in the desert with a shovel hoping to find a gold nugget. It's just not worth it to me. I used to have a radio show, and for years people foisted new prog on me, even burning me cd's, etc., and the only stuff I really love are throwback bands like Anglagard or Astra who sound like long lost 70's bands. Wobbler is good, I'll give them more of a go eventually. I got into Scenes from a Memory (most Dream Theater is a little too metal for me or just musical chops without enough soul), but I haven't listened to it in years, and every time I think of going back to it and putting it on, I end up not doing it, which isn't for me a sign of great enthusiasm. Rush is my all time favorite band, but I don't like almost any of what they influenced. My musical passions are 60's psych, 70's prog, krautrock, 70's electronic, and even some 90's ambient, but modern prog leaves me cold. Ultimately, I've been there and done that over and over and over again, so yes, I have given up. If I come across a modern prog song, like here because I love Nick N Lex, I'll listen, but it's an extreme rarity that I enjoy it.

@@rudolfbecker4313 ok, and all that said, I thought i'd still give you the benefit of the doubt and listened to Dissipate from that 2021 album you love. every time I do this, and i've done it a LOT, I'm almost always let down, but out of fairness, I gave it a chance. It was actually pretty good at first, but I thought, just wait... and then of course they HAD to come in with the heavy metal riffs and showy playing that are two of the hallmarks I hate about modern prog. I just don't think heavy metal or intensely crunchy riffs or speed playing mixes well with prog for the most part. It ends up sounding just like Dream Theater and so much other modern prog, and it has very little in common with vintage 70's prog. it's fine, it's just definitively NOT the same genre, and it's a genre I almost never care for, whether you call it neo-prog, or modern prog or just "prog," but the similarities between it and 70's prog are only similarities - you can spot the differences a mile away. I don't mind people showing off their skills, but in the 70's it seemed like it was more a natural expression of the music, and not so much of a "look how much heavier and faster and how many more notes I can throw at you than everyone else," mixed in with the obligatory slower more intimate parts to show what they think a longer song with many diverse sections is supposed to sound like - it ends up sounding formulaic to me because most groups do that in so many songs. if you want to check out a great vintage prog song that uses heaviness and riffs and showing off, but where it feels more natural (at least to my ears), check out Death Warmed Up by High Tide. That's who they were, and it doesn't feel like they're trying to fit into any kind of a mold.

At first I'd like to say thank you for your 2 long and very good explaining answers. Sometimes I react spontaneously, but right now I'm watching parallel the European soccer championship, England vs Scotland. So I guess I'll sleep first and then answer. I love to discuss about music with people who know a lot of music and a lot about music. so for now good night
