I've had a number of friends that hear this song for the first time and get thrown off by the "yodel" as well... but for myself, after listening to it over so many years now, it could be one of my favorite elements of the song. Very unique and out of character from Maynard's usual singing. ... I'm guessing it will grow on you

Glad you're listening in order. Thirteenth Step is a concept album about drug addiction and it's freaking gorgeous. To me this song is our main character wanting drugs from an acquaintance. The build up over the song (in my opinion) is his frustration at having to keep up appearances when he just wants his "package". I started this album not being a fan. But every listen gets better especially if you hear the album as a whole. It is now among my "perfect" albums
@neonom10242 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily drug addiction specifically; all the lyrics of the songs on Thirteenth Step are each from a unique perspective on addiction.
@edrueter92 жыл бұрын
I hear it as sex addiction. A guy lying his way in with a female with his peripheral on "the package." I guess that's the brilliance that you can interpret it so many ways.

This song is hypnotic, slowly building, then the crescendo of anger and pain. Then drops back into the soft groove once again. Simulating the desperate need for the drug.

you know what? about the chorus thing? I still have a thing about the way mjk sings a few notes in the Fear Inoculum album. Maybe it's familiarity and closeness to which of what we've been brought up with; meaning that what's new feels off.

@davidlfort3 жыл бұрын
I hadn't listened to this song in years, and the first 30 seconds had me questioning in Danny did the drums for the song. No super complicated polyrhythms, but kind of a weird syncopation and an "exotic" sounding drum instrument, just kinda sounded like something he would do.

Maynard made this "sideband" with Billy Howerdel (thx for the correction) who was TOOL's guitar engineer at the time. It became so popular that the guys at TOOL feared it could take MJK's time from TOOL's. Hehe... Little did they know Mjay still had gas inside him for one more band and a vineyard.

🚨SONG REACTION SUGGESTION🚨 I’d be curious to see what you think of Soundgarden’s ‘MAILMAN’. Cornell goes falsetto in a very similar way to Maynard here. It’s heavy, groovy, & underrated, IMO. …and yes-the chorus will grow on you, like a spore.

Best Live example is "Orestes" stone and echo live at red rock's "Disillusioned" from their most recent album is an excellent song that you should also take a look at besides the live performance to really see how good a perfect circle is.

Thirteenth Step is a concept album about the different aspects and perspectives of addiction, and the recovery from it. You have to give the entire album a listen before getting the full experience & perspective. (Just my humble opinion) Nothing Maynard does is ever trivial, or without deeper meaning.

laughing at the comments about how this song is a giant metaphor for addiction and stuff..they miss that the title is also a joke about Recovery. The "13th steppers" are the people that cruise meetings to pick up vulnerable people for easy sex.

I think the high note he hits on lie is meant to be grating and offputting as it would kind of fit in with the story of the song. Just a theory.
