Haha this video made my German self feel a lot better tbh, so thanks! When I was still living in London, I was walking around in Shoreditch and a guy approached me to ask where he could find a cab. I told him how to get to the High St because he'll most likely 'get lucky' there. He looked at me as if I suddenly grew a second head, thanked me politely and walked as directed. Only after I thought the conversation over a few minutes later, it dawned on me that 'get lucky' is a slang term for getting laid and what I meant was the phrase 'be lucky'. Every piece of my skin shrivels up like a prune whenever I recall this rather embarrassing encounter :D

Two tips for Joel : one : I always remember DOZEN because in French we say DOUZAINE and almost like in Spanish DOUZE is twelve. two: first time I went to the USA, I had to talk to the customs officer and when I told him I wanted to stay in the country for a FORTNIGHT, he understood FOUR NIGHTS and was about to send me back to my country because I clearly didn't understand what he meant

That Lucy Ending :D 1. Fortnight is an old English word meaning 2 weeks. It is very frequently used by George R.R. Martin in Game of Thrones :D 2. Dozen exists in Georgian as well in a form of "Duzhini" (Zh= French J) and means twelve. Also very old-fashioned.

It's not just English, many other languages have words to refer to a specific quantity. For example in Spanish dozen-> docena, is used to talk about eggs, pastries, empanadas (similar to pasties). Fortnight-> quincena. In this case quincena refers to 15 days, whereas fortnight refers to 14 days. This is mainly used for holidays so I assumed that it's called like that because most people took 2 weeks off from work to go away, therefore saying a fortnight/quincena, because it's always that amount of time by law. I know it can vary and that people in Europe have longer holidays in general, but for most people, 2 weeks used to be the case at least years ago. Hope that helps

Jo and Lia are the funniest teachers on KZbin. Even Lucy sounded more relaxed, less formal then she would sometimes look. Lia, don't worry I never get left and right correctly either and I'm 33 years old hahahaha. My solution was to put a watch on my left side arm, so I always look for where my watch is in order to get it right. Thanks for the video guys (:

You might be right! However for me it works as an extra challenge, it makes me pay more attention, therefore training my ears and while listening to their natural way of speaking. It makes learning more realistic and when you finally get to understand them, then you'll definitely be ready for speaking to natives. In the beginning it was hard, but now listening to them is part of personal studies. Take care xx

Lol I’m not a teacher but once I had to substitute a teacher in this English course. The students were basic learners and for some weird reason they would say/write things like LARRY BEE, instead of the song title “Let it be” or LARRY POPPINGS, instead of “lollipop”. And the worst thing is that I couldn’t keep a straight face all the time. In the end we were all laughing.
