Blowing an engine is a right of passage for modifying (especially a GT-R) but the sad part is when you don’t learn from it. So, why did we blow an engine? That’s where the lessons are learned.

Parts are intended to handle what they are designed for and the company made two grades. These were likely the lower grade one and they bought the engine with unknown pistons. I'm fairly sure it is impossible to find out which ones they are without asking the original builder or doing destructive testing in a lab so... It was a risk and we all learnt a lesson!

Not gonna lie, I do enjoy when you tell a manufacturer "hey we did this this and this and it failed", and they go "which part was it?.. Oh no you don't want that one, that's the cheap one and you're gonna see stretched out gudgeon (or wrist pin in the states)" and it's exactly what happened. Sucks to think you have good forged pistons and only have OEM or sub OEM grade. Now excuse me while I go add a turbo oil line filter to my couple of turbo cars ;-)
@MotiveVideo5 жыл бұрын
I think oil filter sales will be up this month. GCG actually posted the pics of it on their facebook and instagram. On the flip side, at least someone from that parts company admitted the problem, but has now fixed the issue with new design and new factory

@InitialDIYmods5 жыл бұрын
@@msengineeringdavid3702 For someone with Engineering in their screen name, I would have thought you'd know how important material selection is to a design... especially considering the heat cycles and stresses pistons see. Especially in the wrist pin area with a high RPM motor like the RB26. Plus the original engine looked like a factory rebuild with forged pistons (if you saw the original video). It's possible the previous owner damaged them in some way, but with the manufacturer discontinuing the pistons due to a poor material choice, it's not likely that the previous owner damaged the pistons so perfectly that it lasted for many power runs and races and then failed without the tune, oil, or coolant issues contributing to it. If it failed immediately, you'd have a point. But this looks like a fatigue failure due to improper material selection. Especially considering that multiple wrist pins were loose, not just the one of the failure. But you know, there I go using my brain better
@msengineeringdavid37025 жыл бұрын
Initial DIY mods you just posted a comment assuming USED pistons were still okay saying it sucks they making something that’s not as strong after it’s BEEN MADE clear there was excessive wrist pin wear. Unbelievable in the comments about different engines, you might even think it was grade school children at the keyboard. Barra this, 2JZ that, Coyote this. C'mon children behave and act your age. You make the car hobby look horribly immature by this constant bickering about which engines are the best. It's not cute, women for sure don't think it's cute, it's stupid and petty. Half are just bandwagon riders, never owned a 2JZ powered car, never owned Coyote especially in AU/NZ since they are in new model Mustangs and half the people posting can't even afford one. This was about the project car not dumb arguing over which engine is better. Stop being stupid. I wouldn't blame Motive, Fullboost, Rob Dahm, Tarvish or Peter Bjork to shut down the comment sections because people who you are suppose to be adults act like children, which is actually an insult to children.
