I just ordered a Barbie pink tree, but I have never tasted one. If I grow one from seed, will it be true to its hybrid name? I keep hearing different opinions about this. I have only tried one guava in my life that I bought from an Asian market, and it was a white crunchy variety. It tasted terrible and had no sweetness. Hopefully, this tree will produce something better.
@growpuravida8 ай бұрын
Haha this was the reason my wife never wanted to plant any guavas; she tasted the green crunchy ones in Asia and said it’s the most ridiculous fruit. Of course Barbie Pink is very different. I’m describing the taste in the video, it’s also extremely aromatic. Good luck with your tree! It usually produces very fast, our air layered tree held fruit same year after separating from mother tree. Seedlings of guava don’t always come true, but worth planting several especially if you have land for that. Sometimes seedlings exceed the parent in certain characteristics, that’s how new varieties are made. If you end up with a mediocre tree, you can always graft it with a known variety. I plant many guava seeds to experiment.

@@growpuravida Do you know anything about mexican cream Guavas. I am trying to grow them from seed. They are supposed to be sweet. I hate the thought of growing something for a few years, and having it end up producing trash. I might try 'approach grafting' two of them together and leaving them connected to their rootstocks, so they will help each other out. Hopefully it will produce a vigorous tree.
@growpuravida8 ай бұрын
I have never tasted a mexican cream but i heard they are very good tasting. The problem is that there are many variations and many sellers selling as mexican cream and they may not taste the same. Variation will be there from seed grown plants as well.

Great video! How does your Tikal guava compare in size to the Barbie pink? Is your Tikal also a pink guava? I have a Tikal but it produces golf size guavas and would like to know if they can get bigger.
@growpuravida3 жыл бұрын
@Dan Marcus thanks for watching. Tikal fruits for us have been smaller size than Barbie pink fruits. The largest was size of a tennis ball(elongated not round shape), and Barbie pink fruits have been double that size, sometimes even larger. Tikal has a deeper pink color compared to light pink of Barbie pink, and taste is a bit sweeter compared to Barbie pink. Thinning the fruits will give bigger size fruits. Also good rain during the fruiting season will allow for a bigger size fruits.

Any suggestion which pink flesh guava is the best. Looking for a creamy pink with small seed.
@growpuravida3 жыл бұрын
Barbie pink and Tikal are two i have tried from our trees. The Ruby supreme is yet to fruit. Barbie pink is big in size, creamy when fully ripe, very aromatic with strawberry and guava aroma to fill the whole room but not that sweet. Tikal is smaller and a bit sweeter. Both have good amount of seeds. I have not tried the Red Crystal seedless too so can’t say about taste but perhaps that would be better if you want few or no seeds.

Do you bag all the guavas? What size of bag do you use? Once I had bagged a guava fruit. But the fruit had fallen off in the netting bag before it ripened. I don't know why it rotted in the bag...
@growpuravida3 жыл бұрын
We bag about 2/3s of the guavas. We remove the rest of the fruitlets, otherwise fruit size of all is not so big. The younger the tree, the fewer fruit should be allowed to ripen. If you leave some unbagged, fruit flies will come to propagate in the unbagged ones and the cycle will continue... We noticed that in winter unbagged fruit there were no larvae, they get active in summer. Standard size sold on Amazon, but some guavas get so big that this size isn't enough and they get trapped inside and misshapen.

How often you water guava if there is no rain? My trees always drop immature guava, and I am not sure if it’s over or under watering! I am in southern CA close to the coast.
@growpuravida4 жыл бұрын
Hi Maggie, here in South Florida it rains pretty frequently but there are some years with months where it may not for 3 weeks. Guava sets fruit during rainy season luckily for us, so we don't have to water the trees, but we water them a couple times a month and mulch deeply during the dry season, otherwise they get weakened and produce much less during summer, and get pest problems. We air-layer/plant new pots early summer and so there is enough rainfall every 3-4 days. If we were to plant in dry months like Jan-March we would do a deep watering every 2-3 days. But this particular tree in the video was planted in summer and watered only 3 times during the winter months. In CA it rains less, so more watering is needed. Dropping fruits early is also a sign of a stressed plant, perhaps from less water. Guavas also get yellow leaves and shed some leaves when they are in drought. Guavas grow fast and give more lateral branches when watered regularly. Also air-layered guavas have superficial roots compared to seed grown guavas, so they are dependent on frequent watering. Mulching with a foot of mulch really helps. We also added beet meal and fruit scraps, like jackfruit and rotten bananas, as fertilizer under the mulch to encourage bigger fruit after the mother plant suffered a pest infestation a couple years ago, and it recovered fully and quickly.

We have had very little rain at our land in SE Manatee County, but the guavas are always prolific rain or shine. The only thing we have to worry about is winter frost on the tropical ones.
