I wonder if Lulu wasn't around a boar in her previous home, I remember her lunging, shrieking and chattering in anger at Sylvester (he was still alive then) when she first arrived. For a while, I questioned whether she would be able to be with the main herd since she was so resistant to his authority. She eventually accepted it, but it was a rough introduction that she clearly was not used to before.

I run a small rescue for my state, and see a lot of sad stories too. My own piggies (not fosters) are all rescued. The first ever pig I adopted I found at a dog pound! No idea why she was there, but I immediately fell in love with Guinea pigs!
@lorriemiller67503 жыл бұрын
Sometimes the only place to take them is an animal shelter. I have a shelter near where I live and in order to find out ehat animals they have beyond dogs and cats that are up for adoption you have to ask because they do not post or list anything but dogs and cats and they have had ferrets, Chinchillas, rabbits, and occasionally Guinea Pigs but if you do not ask about small animals they make no mention of them at all when they should give them a chance to be adopted too because you can't adopt them if you don't know they are there and available for adoption.

I rescued my first guinea pigs last year! It was a momma and her baby boy, who had sadly molested her, and they were being given away for free on Craigslist. Only a few weeks after our piggies came home, momma gave birth to three pups! Luckily, no birth defects, which we were very paranoid about due to their poor nutrition and tiny prison. These guineas never even got hay, only pellets, and I have no idea how they survived for 3+ months with their first family. Now, the 3 girls free roam my 12'x12' dining room, while the 2 boys live in a 8'x4' C&C pen in my room! I would have never imagined the change in their coats and activity. Such lovely pets

Rescues 100%! My baby Nutmegs story is so unfortunate. She was adopted from a pet store (we assume) and was kept in a Tupperware container with another aggressive piggie. She was only fed a handful of pellets once a week like a fish. The two guinea pigs kept together couldn’t even move they were so squished together. She was rescued by a nice teenager who took extremely good care of her. She runs a guinea pig rescue and has tons of experience. She said it took her about eight months for this guinea pig to get used to people, dogs and just living in a home overall. My piggie is still aggressive towards other piggies out of fear, but she now lives in a well educated home that loves her.

My first two piggies were rescues; abandoned inside their cage, dumped into a strip-mall dumpster with plastic bags around their necks. Thankfully Gizmo and Shadow were healthy despite that, and though they were already getting into their senior years, had a good home with me. My third pig was a young one, and had been left outside the shelter in a filthy cage, with infected feet. The shelter nursed him back to health, Oscar joined my piggy menagerie, and when Gizmo went blind from old age, Oscar became his guide piggy and he followed him everywhere.

I miss all of your little piggies especially Sylvester. Thank you for sharing their back stories. Your channel is excellent 👍 We rescued a piggy who we didn't know was pregnant. She wasn't even 2 months old. We lost 3 of her babies and we tried soooo hard to nurse them day and night for 2 weeks.....their mom sadly would not feed them. Only the one she would nurse lived. It was heartbreaking! So we have three little girls. One is our original rescue who is a Satin Abyssinian named Peanut. Our second girl who was to be her companion is also an Abyssinian, named Poppy, and Poppy's baby who lived is Snookie, also an Abyssinian. It's thanks to channels like yours that how people are treating these beautiful little creatures is slowly changing. Our girls have the best of everything and live like little princesses. We don’t know much of his back story, but we know that he had never been with other piggies and was just not looked after. When we got him we had to get him used to the others without him actually being able to fight with them, so we put him in a hutch inside their stable, and he was popcorning as soon as he got in xD he was actually really good when he saw them! he’s got a massive personality and is definitely a foodie! I love that you mentioned how there are responsible people that realize they can't do it anymore, maybe it's becoming too much or they're down to just one left and don't want to care for more. It's good to point out that some people adopt piggies and even knowing the work they take, sometimes get to a point they can't anymore. Growing up in a house where we always had guinea pigs since I was about 4 or 5 until I was 16, we loved our piggies so much. During the recession my dad lost his job, my mom was working minimum wage and even the cost of extra food and bedding was too much, we had to give them away, but we realized before it turned to any form of neglect. So any pig owners that are at a point where it's not working out anymore, or your little one is now solo- it's okay to help them find a new home. I'm sure they're happy they had a good time with you and they can have a new adventure.

I've taken in three rescue pigs, Russ, Owen and Toph. I only still have Toph. Russ was being given away for free with a free cage because he had a "neurological tick" with walking around with a tilted head. Someone else took the cage and left the guinea pig. One google search later if he would need special care it was obviously an ear infection. Pretty advanced to since he wouldn't eat and was very lethargic. A round of medicine later and limping him through on a liquid diet for a couple days he got better. He was always runty and pretty sure he was deaf. He just turned out to be a very special guinea pig. He was neutered and spent his life in a female herd. When he was three he got sick again with a respiratory infection. Medicine looked like it was working but a little while later he declined rapidly and died surrounded by me and his girls. Still not over it and it's been over a year. Second one, Owen, was from a craigslist add. A woman who took care of a disabled woman who had the guinea pig. He was very sweet and people friendly. The carer was scared of the guinea pig though so when the owner was moved elsewhere or hospitalized long term, I can't remember, she put him up to find a better home. He had some ammonia burns on his feet since she couldn't even bring herself to clean the cage. I thought he might be a female and had been looking for an adult female for awhile to ease the tension between Russ and Plushie my first guinea pig. Luckily I noticed in time and my husband helped find a home. He was taken in by a older lady who was absolutely enamored with him at first sight. The last one Toph is still alive and still with me. She came into the same pet store I got Russ. She was in a big batch of babies from their guinea pig drop shipper. The entire batch was starving and their hair was even falling out. One was so weak it just laid there as the other guinea pigs ate it's toes and ears and the pet store had to put it down. I didn't find out about this batch until after my shift the next day. Toph stood out as one of the smallest and had milky blue eyes. She was skin and bones and very thin hair. She was so tiny she fit in my husband's button up shirt front pocket. And she was supposedly a month or more old. I fostered her a few days and my boss said I could just have her. My boss thinks the blindness was caused by a type of flea powder this guy used. Another one was blind in one eye. Now her eyes are clear and a beautiful dark brown. I think the blindness has cleared up but I'm not sure to what degree. She was the baby of the herd until six months after Russ passed and I got a couple more guinea pigs. She's not pleased but we're working through it slowly.

When I got Nibbler, I thought she was just an older, bigger baby. Now I think she was close to adult. This is because she didn't grow much, isn't scared of anything, and loves to be held. As well as they were taken care of, it may have been a situation where an owner passed away, and the person handling their property had no idea what to do. Still no excuse to leave an animal outside in a box, but people do out-of-charachter things while grieving.
@Keeva-3 жыл бұрын
@@karencostanzo2906 I know grief is a terrible thing, but if someone is together enough to put the animal in a box and dump it, they're together enough to at least put the box at a shelter where the person finding it will have immediate food and facilities to care for it.
