Our siding has arrived and its time to cover up this house wrap. The anticipation for the color was intense because we've never seen it in person. We LOVE IT!

Hi! We're Nick and Jen, a retired military veteran of 14 years and professional dancer/entertainer at Coyote Ugly Bar. Together, we decided to sell everything and break free of the glitz, glam and chaos of city life to move off gird. We live on our 20 acres of remote land in the mountains of Southern Utah.
We’re trying to be as self sufficient as possible by installing all our own utilities and doing everything DIY with as much modern technology as can make happen. Living off grid is about the freedom to build our own path one plank at a time. Life, indeed, is Elevated Off Grid. Come along and see what life is like as we continue to build our property and adventure around Southern Utah's mountains.

We have vinyl siding and it has be nailed by hand loosely with room to expand on the ends. Usually with roofing larger heads. Our has lasted 24 years in hot Texas sun and 0 degree winters.

Happy 4th Nick and Jen!! The place is sure looking good with the addition of the gravel and now starting on the siding. I agree with you both on the color selection. It should make it blend in nicely with the green trees in the surounding area. You may notice it appears smaller going from the white wrap to the darker siding color. It's just a matter of a couple of days you you will soon adjust and be used to it. It really looks great you guys!! Have an awesome week. Larry, Central Valley, Ca.

You are going to regret nailing siding tight with nail gun! Siding is meant to float on nail on wall for expansion and contraction to prevent buckling. Also you need to add more nails for wind.
@lifeelevatedoffgrid
@lifeelevatedoffgrid 3 ай бұрын
Hi Chris! All the nails are sitting about 1/4” above the siding. So it can slide side to side. Vinyl siding is supposed to float on the osb. Also it’s recommended to nail every 16” or so. So we’re following all of that. I think we should be good. 👍🏼

I think they make a nail gun that's just for vinyl siding and it doesn't drive the nail all the way in. I'm not sure what Nick is using.

@@roberthughes2665 Hi Robert. The gun I’m using is a roofing nailer with a vinyl siding tip. That is correct gun for vinyl siding.
@GoodwillCriminalsOfDallas
@GoodwillCriminalsOfDallas 2 ай бұрын
You can get away with using a non-siding nailer if you nail next to a screwdriver for instance that forces the floating gap for normal siding. The siding used is to your tastes and style choices of course. I have always used a siding that is cement-based because of the resistance to fire and wind. They even make siding that looks like cut logs but is very strong. There are even bark impressions.

My tips with vinyl siding is 1. Start at the front of the building so u don’t see ur cut ends. 2. Don’t nail the siding pcs in tight..u have to allow them room to contract and expand with the heat/cold conditions. Also chalk the seams where u cut to make ur boxes fit around ur outlets etc as to keep water from getting behind.
@cathiwim
@cathiwim 3 ай бұрын
Caulk the seams, not chalk
@sirarrowhead1
@sirarrowhead1 3 ай бұрын
@@cathiwim You should ("NEVER") chaulk the seams, that would/could lock them in and not allow them to expand and contract. Again like @loriemonroe76 said, Vinyl Siding is "hung" (NOT) installed.Nick should adjust his nailer to stop 1/8" - 3/8"from tight.
@loriemonroe76
@loriemonroe76 3 ай бұрын
@@sirarrowhead1 I’m sorry I didn’t explain that well. I was only talking the boxes like the one he cut to fit around the propane pipe etc. to seal it back as one pc. It would still be free floating. Nick and Jen, u two are doing a great job. Nick, I love watching how ur brain processes, especially those ah-ha moments. Love the color..the white trim is really going to make it pop.

@lifeelevatedoffgrid If you want to cut your install time, bite the bullet and do "ALL" of your trim first. It take the longest and having to stop to put trim pieces on or do your metal work just slows you down. You will find that you get into a groove when hanging your long pieces. As long as you check for level every 3-5 rows you should be able to run your siding like you are shingling a roof and you will fly through it. Stick with your Senco nailer for (all) of the vinyl pieces or hand nail them. I noticed it isn't nailing them tight which is what you want. I'm a national Project Manager for a home improvement company enjoying watching you guys learn as you so. But buckling siding is nt fun to remove and replace, so it's best to do it right the first time.

They make special nail guns for use on siding so they aren't nailed tight. You can also adjust penetration depth to not nail tight. I think that is what Nick is using. It's what I used on the siding on my garage and worked out fine leaving space between the nail head and the siding, so it was free to float.
