Did you have to pay extra for the safari when you booked your JWM accomodation?

Nope it's included in the stay, although the entry to the national park (charged per day) is usually paid separately!@@JoshuaTres

You don’t need to spend $3,000 to see our beautiful country. Masai Mara is notoriously expensive. You could travel around for a few weeks on that money and see everything and more. Next time please come and visit the coast…especially Diani. One of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Karibu Kenya 🇰🇪 ❤

$3,000 is not just for the Safari but it’s more about the hospitality from JW Marriott.

Fascinating to hear from your game driver. These jobs are given to a lucky few, let alone a woman. I imagine she is an inspiration to the girls in her village. It’s conversations like this - that’s why we travel.

Going on an African safaris is very additive. You will find safari experience in Kruger National Park (South Africa) is very different from Masai Mara. In addition, Masai Mara is a public park and safari in public park vs private is very different.... mainly you won't have 20 cars parking next to you to try to see leopards... you get maybe 2 or 3. Also private park safari means you don't have to stay on the road whereas they don't allow off roading when you are in a public park. So sometimes you see a pangolin somewhere deeper in the woods but you can't get to it because off roading isn't allowed. Doesn't look like you went on a hot air balloon ride in Masai Mara. That was one of my fav activity in the park.
@freedomm Жыл бұрын
I heard the main difference between safaris in Kenya and South Africa is the more open savanna plains common in East Africa, vs the bush and shrubs in Southern Africa.
@kevinhsu8184 Жыл бұрын
@@freedomm That's very true. Also Masai Mara is mostly an open field so you see a lot of animals all at once. From my limited experience at several private game reserves around Kruger National Park in S Africa is that you see a lot less animals and bushes and shrubs makes game viewing more challenging (that's why winter time is best time to go to Safari in S Africa). With that said, I believe there are very few private game reserves around Masai Mara so most likely you will be viewing lions with 10-20 jeeps full of people instead of typical 2-3 jeeps in a private reserve in South Africa. If the goal is to see wildebeest crossing river with crocodiles chomping on their legs as seen on Nat Geo, then (I believe) you can only see that in Masai Mara National Park in July/August. Not sure when river crossing happens in Serengeti.... maybe May/June or earlier?

13:45 It’s such a misconception that safaris are all hugely expensive. Can have an amazing experience for far far far less when booked with a local operator such as Sterling Travel in Nairobi (I’ve used the company 3x in the last two years), which also provides experiences in Tanzania and Rwanda. By the way, park fees are cheaper on the Tanzanian side…same stretch of park, just called the Serengeti. It’s very typical to see Lions in the Masai Mara or Serengeti, far more often than in Southern African national parks. You really can get up close to them, often they’ll just wander by the vehicle barely noticing you. By the way, it’s the females that are the primary predator, the males can assist but their focus is to protect the pride.

This makes me want to go on safari. It's beautiful and the cats are magnificent. Disney's Animal Kingdom Safari gives a decent representation of this adventure, but the real thing would be magnificent. And I bet the lodge - and food - was wonderful. Sorry, Dan, that you were dealing with sickness. Never fun when away from home. But good for you for pushing through and being able to experience as much as possible.

I'm happiest chilling with Elephants, Gorillas (so cute), Orangutans (even cuter),, Camels, more elephants and hippos. All veggie animals. And I'm a big homo radical faerie, so I have never coded heteronormative. Here at San Diego Zoo, the gorillas start to recognize you if you come to see them regularly enough. They are so beautiful. Experiences observing the animals definitely stay with you. My husband and I did our South African safari in 2002 yet the memories such as watching lion cubs tossing around an unfortunate turtle as if it was a ball, a leopard mother attempting to hunt only to be interrupted by her misbehaving cub, and a baby rhino charging towards our vehicle but thankfully suddenly stopping about six feet away and blowing freshly eaten grass all over my arm remain just as vivid. Also two bull elephants frolicking in water with one sporting an enormous erection attempting to mount the other. 😂😅 Yes, we have photos somewhere!
