The library in my town of 3500 is the busiest per capita in my province. We use it all the time. Not only for books, but it has tons of programs, free internet, a coffee nook where you can purchase various drinks, awesome sitting areas, game areas, a seed library for gardeners, and a wing for kids that can be sectioned off from the rest of the library. It truly is the hub of our community.

Not a librarian but a library employee here - the decimals help the library stay up to date. As new books are published, they are shelved in between books that are already there. By having a decimal system, it greatly widens the amount of possible numbers between each book, allowing you to continuously add and circulate texts over time. It can be confusing for people to understand though, so if you're stumped - ask the librarian for help! They love helping patrons. Trust me lol.

The other thing about libraries is the people that work there are generally really happy to help you and let you know what services are available. I am currently in Singapore on vacation and went to a public library here because they had a book that was relevant for something I am working on as a student at a university in Spain. At first I thought, "oh, they are going to say the library is only for Singapore citizens" and tell me to go away but then I thought about every library I'd been to before and how helpful they always are. long story short... it was the same here in Singapore. Multiple people helped me. Nobody asked if I was a Singapore resident or anything. Libraries FTW!

THREE CHEERS FOR JENNA!! Not EVERY research book is available on the internet and a lot of the 'articles' you find online on any given topic are nothing more than the regurgitations of each other with no new or deeper information. Going to the library for your research, however, means you can access A LOT more information and very often you can get books beyond those actually housed in your local library through Interlibrary Loan programs. In fact, there are specialty libraries that cater to specific topics that can take your research even deeper if that's what you need - I'm talking specifically ones on college \ university campuses. Not to mention all the FREE fictional books you can get from a library, free or very inexpensive use of photocopy machines and scanners, movies, free access to genealogy records if you're a member of the library - which itself is free!

Oh, the book displays that introduce you to new themes! They still have a purpose.

42:00 Our town recently got a new Library in the last few years. The biggest thing our town has is the dvds and blurays and stuff and I guess you can just get movies with a Library card. That is neat now with movie rental places going out of business. Those who dont have the luxery of having cable or internet let alone streaming services still get much use. People walk by my store, stop in to cool off and buy a drink, with me asking the staff to watch their stuff including dvds tagged by our Library. Our Library does a lot of other stuff like mentioned here but as Link comments some of it is more of community center-ish. But keeping Libraries of other outdated media non-print is interesting to me.

Come on, guys, libraries?! As someone who has spent his whole career thus far working in both academic and public libraries, this was kinda hard to hear. Are new libraries still being built? Absolutely! And they’re needed now more than ever. Just look at all the recent attempts at book banning that are going on in our very own backyard. Think of that LGBTQ+ kid who may not feel safe at home and doesn’t have access to any resources or books/media that reflect who they are. They can come to the public library and access those resources in a safe space. And that’s just what libraries are. They’re safe spaces where everyone is welcome. Granted, the role of libraries has shifted over the years. Y’all talked about the fact that with the advent of the internet we now have a world of information at our fingertips, and that’s so true. And librarians are specifically trained to be able to sift through all that info and determine what’s reliable/trustworthy and what’s not. Did y’all know that most librarian jobs require a 2-3 year graduate degree in library/information science? I worked in a public library in a very low-income, underserved area where a lot of people couldn’t afford things that a lot of us take for granted, like internet access. You can get that for free at the library and get help using it. There are free story times for kids. There are free programs for teens and adults. The library is one place in our society you can come to where you're not expected to spend any money. I could go on...

Interesting conversation. That kid's room with the two staircases sounds like the best ever! Some of my family would just say hello when they abswered the landline phone, but others were taught to give the area followed by the last six digits of their number. I live in Perth in Scotland, so if that had applied to me I would have said, "Perth 123456?" Not my actual number obviously. We were taught to read ordinance survey maps in geography at school, which I found really interesting. I have little vision, so the symbols were made tactile for me. I can read braille in four languages if I wanted to, but it seems incredible to me now that people use computers and internet resources for things like learning other languages, instead of going to an in-person class with a physical book. Then we could say similar about most other classes now and argue whether it has improved the quality of the student experience or not. I have noticed though, that instead of thinking and wondering about things, most people have a conditioned response to immediately type in an online search engine to find the answer to a question.

My dentist has a big tv in the waiting room and little ones on the ceiling above the dentist chairs, and they're all always playing HGTV.

Information is knowledge and knowledge challenges authority. However, looking something up on the internet engenders a shallower understanding than researching a topic in books, so there is a trade-off for the easy access we have to information today.

I grew up partially without internet and I had to call my mom to check in all. The. Time. I try to give my kids autonomy because I remember how terrible it felt. I also remember my family deciding that I needed to use Napster and our one landline to download music for them...then they'd call and get mad 1) if I didn't answer and/or 2) I didn't get everything downloaded because they wouldn't. Stop. Calling. 🤦♀️

I also feel like my kids are somewhere much safer where we live now, so that helps with the anxiety.

Link’s old phone number is the same last 4 digits of my grandma’s number when I was a kid . Crazy
