Money spent on London theater is never wasted. When I was stationed in London in 1980, as an impoverished Ensign, I snuck away from work one day to watch an afternoon matinee of “Anna and the King’ with Yul Brunner. 42 years later: it remains a priceless memory. For afternoon tea, the Sanderson Hotel does a madhatter themed menu. The Berkeley Hotel does an amazing pret a porter afternoon tea. Agree, black taxi is the way to go vs. Uber. Addison Lee is awesome for airport transportation service.

What wonderful experiences! My husband and I went to London in 1998 and stood in line for 1/2 price tickets for Phantom of the Opera. It was wonderful but we had to peek around a pole. 😆. We need to get there again someday, just so many places to dream about during Covid.

I love London, and it is also expensive for us as a couple. Last trip included tickets to Hamilton $$$. We love the galleries, (often free) especially the National Portrait, the Tate Modern, the British Museum, pubs are great for a cheaper dinner. Walking around the parks and heritage. Quirky little places like Samuel Johnson's House. The residence of the architect Sir John Soane on Lincoln's Inn Fields. The Victoria and Albert museum...

Fun fact portugal introduced tea to England The tickets from lisbon to london if you get them 1 month ahead are around 50 euros so pretty easy to travel, the only place more affordable is to spain from here

I AM surprised you haven't visited North Africa even though it is very close. Go to Morocco, Algeria, or Tunisia especially Morocco cause there is a direct flight from Lisbon to Casablanca

London food is amazing and inexpensive if you try a curry. India food there is very authentic and accessible. The black taxis are the way to travel as they will have all the info you want and the best ways to get around. They have to pass an exam on the routes to get the license! Lisbon is near and dear to my stomach as I live for seafood and their is very little cheap and good British food barring breakfast. Getting around London in fact the UK, we travelled by train to Wales from London was a breeze and very inexpensive. For a native New Yorker I was almost embarrassed at their underground versus our subway.

If you are a Londoner and book well in advance you can get much cheaper prices for musicals. Just seen Hamilton for £20 - limited view & booked well in advance > 3 months. Also most of all museums are excellent and FREE. Lisbon is great ( I'm from Lisbon living in London) IF (BIG IF) you don't have to work- otherwise I prefer London (less bureaucracy, better wages) . You never get bored in London and it's a great city to entertain children and teens - great green spaces too (for a major city)
