@@HyggeJourney I am from the city of Guarda, which is in the north of central Portugal, where the highest mountains in Portugal are located, with 2000 meters of altitude, called "Serra da Estrela", beautiful nature, the simplicity of beautiful people, landscapes and the best of my region is the cheese,wine,chorizo, parma ham and bread all homemade which makes the taste much better what you will enjoy. I hope that one day you can visit and enjoy it to the fullest.

Do it, I did so 3.5 yrs ago, and wondered why I didn't do it before! |I grew up in Lisbon & had the most beautiful childhood. I never forgot it, & after 40 years in the US, I said to myself : ' What am I doing here ??!! This place is out of control! In my 3 yrs here, I' ve accomplished what took me 40 yrs to accomplish there. Portugal is not perfect, but it is special, kind, it makes me happy, safe and it's a lovely place. I'm from Denmark and my husband is from the U.S. We currently live in California and are planning to relocate to Portugal as soon as navigating the world becomes a little bit easier again. I spent 3 weeks in Portugal the summer before COVID hit, and love the friendly people, felt safe walking everywhere even at night, the food is fresh, varied and interesting, the number of towns, beaches, wineries, and hikes are endless. Also the fast internet is great. We work remotely so this is really important. Much faster than northern California surprisingly! Also close to so many other countries and islands, etc. I could go on! Serious saudades over here! Enjoying your videos!

We have great fiber optic internet I almost any small town and fast 4G where countries like UK or Denmark for that matter. I do enjoy that every corner of the country looks so different. So many hidden gems :) It’s a great country to work remotely from. Don’t forget to read up on the NHR advantage. That you will probably appreciate when coming from US :)

Subbed today - Bom dia! - We are visiting Portugal in October for 3 months and will start the D7 process when we return to the UK. We will travel to a number of areas (Porto, Coimbra, Nazare, Sao Martinho, Liston area) and will stay for a few weeks in each place, at a time. We've been to Portugal for holidays on a number of occasions but realise that holidays are very different to actually living in a country. The reasons why we chose Portugal - Weather much better than in the UK, cost of living, friendly people and welcoming, safety, good standard of healthcare, good internet speeds! and lastly better taxation arrangements. Seems to be very similar to your list!!

I recently moved to Portugal and things must be changing. I recently rented an apartment in Quarteira from a small Olhao real estate agency. I was told the apartment was three times bigger than it is. When I moved in I found significant mold. And that is just the beginning. I gave up my apartment based on what I was told by the agency. And I am handicapped so it isn't easy for me to move.This experience has been a nightmare. Only deal with large reputable agencies.

I'm an American in Seattle, WA. You make me want to live in Portugal. The things that appeal to me are the welcoming attitude toward foreigners (who doesn't love a friendly and accepting reception?) and Internet infrastructure (I work remotely as a software developer). I'm actually planning to visit Lisbon and Porto in October '22, mostly just as part of my personal project to visit at least one new country per year, but also to see how I like it.

This was a really useful video even though my personal situation is a bit different. I am single, without commitments and getting ready to discover greener pastures. Having lived in the UK for past couple of years I witnessed many changes in the society and the system which do not work for me as a foreigner. You made the right choice, particularly for your children. In recent years I noticed several stories of mixed race kids facing racism at school and there was not much willingness to help them from those institutions. No child deserves this so it's great you decided to give yours a better life. Best wishes

I’m from the US (Chicago), parents are from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. I am in my late 40s and seriously thinking about moving out of the country, being a minority and gay, I feel vulnerable in this country due to the recent climate. I want a calm and sane environment. I have been having issues with schools in Portugal. Public schools are very diverse but over subscribed and hard to navigate if your don’t speak the language. Private schools a much better but lack diversity which I struggle with a bit being from super diverse place like London. Great video guys.

Sure! And unfortunately this isn't London :-) But there is areas you can see towards, like take a look at Loures 15-20 min out of Lisbon and it's probably one of the most diverse yet peaceful areas you can find :-)

Hi Angela, Actually after coming to Portugal I find my self reading less and less news. Mostly because of the things they write about are minor compared to US or U.K. So on that front it feels more peaceful. Portuguese classes are very reasonable. Depending on who you want they start at like $10 an hour and upwards. Hi R B, Thanks for your kind words. Well, we have a small advantage in the video production - as I've done a lot of videos for others in the past :-) This is just a hobby for us. I'm glad you are coming to Portugal as well - it's worth a "go" to see if you enjoy it :-) Well, on areas is really difficult. Each area has it's own advantages. So we love Ericeira - no doubt! But! You will find it hard to find a house with much land. But if you want a town house or a flat, it's amazing to be so close to the sea. You have an area on the way to there, Mafra - which also has it's charm - but again is 10-15 min from the coast. Also you can look up further towards, Obidos, Caldas de Rainha - I personally think it is a underrated area. Our approach so far has been Airbnb for the first couple of months until we found a good area with schools etc, and then we rent for a year while getting to know the area. After that we will invest into a specific area and buy our home. I think it's the best approach, when getting to know a new country. You can always get in touch if you want more advice (FB link in description).

As US is becoming less and less human friendly, I'm looking for Plan B in case California becomes something like US Midwest. Portugal is #1 on my backup list, for all the reasons you listed. @@mirka hello! one thing you have to realize as a american is....the size of portugal compared to the usa! i live in the algarve ( faro) and ( as a example) if i decide to go spain to sevilha , it´s a 2 hour trip! i believe in some cities in usa you can experience those 2 hours inside a car in rush hour! here you can decide to live a litle bit further from the border and it´s still pretty close!

I chose VRSA also cause it seems to be less touristic, most seasonal tourists don't go East beyond Tavira. I'm looking for a small village, with good infrastructure. Being able to cross the border on the bike, for couple of hrs, is a bonus. I heard Portugese driving is quite aggressive . Living in US for 30 yrs I prefer not to drive in EU, visiting Poland I don't rent a car anymore, just public transportation.

Hi ya, Beautiful presentation. As a Brit coming to Portugal after Brrxit now I saw this way to get residencia. Can you kindly confirm this is still the case after reading the details below: (If you are an EU citizen, you are free to live and work in any EU country. For UK citizens who want residency, it’s a bit more complicated - but not impossible. When moving to Portugal from the UK after Brexit, non-EU rules apply. You’ll need to request a residence permit and then you can apply for permanent residency after living there for five years. Applying for a residence card If you intend to stay in Portugal more than six months, you must register this with the local town hall (camara) within one month of your 90th day in Portugal and receive a residence card. The document that you need to obtain is often referred to as “residencia”, but the correct name for this is the Certificado de registo de cidadao da uniao Europeia. This is usually issued for an initial five years and if you are still resident after this time, you can apply for permanent residency. According to the official instructions, you must visit the camara with just your passport and be prepared to sign and declare that you either: have work in Portugal are self-employed have sufficient funds to support yourself and your family have valid medical insurance This documentation is usually sufficient, but in some cases, new residents have been asked for other documents as wide-ranging as bank statements, translated employment contracts, and social security declarations. So, it’s best to take a huge folder of all imaginable paperwork, just in case! ) Thanks

It's a lot more complicated when you aren't a EU citizen. We were lucky to do it just before Brexit. I would recommend that you go to the Facebook group for British in Portugal. They have great documentation in Files where you can get a good amount of information. Good luck on your move :)

Good video, and very interesting. I'm married to a Portuguese lady, although we live in London. I reckon at some point we'll move to Lisbon though. On the matter of tax, my own view is the Portuguese government should tighten up the perks for foreigners. Whilst of course they want to attract people to live there, by the same token I think if you live in a country and partake of its services then it only seems fair to pay tax. So, keeping the NHR exemptions at 20% but as a minimum (ie no 0% for dividends), and for a shorter period, would seem fairer.

Glad you like the video ;-) Well, nothing divide people more than tax, politics and religion... :-) But, I do think that you as a country needs to reward the people you want more of. So if a country want more doctors, give them a tax cut. If the country want more people that invest in companies, give them a tax cut... Or if as Portugal, if you want more people investing in the property market give them a tax cut. It's absolutely not clearcut 0% tax in Portugal, there a ton of countries where you wan't receive dividends from because they are on a black list. So you really need to work hard to get full advantage of the tax programs here. I still don't think any country have "fair taxes". It's always unfair, at least for some. I.e. Italy you can pay a fixed €100k tax per year, regardless of how much income you get in. So you could be making €10M / year and still only pay €100K. Again, something to attract wealthy people as they usually spend lots of money in the country as well, which gives in-direct tax payments. Sort of a way to boost economies.

I just think it could and should be a little more balanced and slightly less generous, not to penalise incomers, but on the principle that if you move to a country you should want to contribute to it and so not so much of the burden falls on Portuguese citizens themselves (people use the health service, drive on the roads, visit the beaches etc).

Average salary in Portugal between 1000,00 and 1500 euros a month? I don't think so. In Lisbon salaries are higher than the rest of the country but then so is rent. Out in the small cities average salaries are most likely to be around 800,00 euros a month. Teachers and engineers make more than that but most nurses, for example, make around 1000,00. Restaurant workers and shop workers in a town in the interior usually earn the minimum salary, which is 665 euros gross a month, this paid 14 times. In my opinion, a lot of expats make a big mistake in moving to Lisbon without looking at other options in the country. Porto is less expensive, and Braga is even more affordable. There are much cheaper options between Porto and Lisbon like Aveiro, Leiria, Figueira da Foz, and even Coimbra. Rent in Lisbon has made the city an option only for the very rich. To give an example, my granddaughters pay less in Groningen, Netherlands than they were paying in Lisbon. And the conditions of the place are much better. Plus, they get help from the Dutch government. In Portugal they got nothing

I don't live in Lisbon or Porto, and my salary is well above 2000E a month. This is more than some MD's get paid here. There are all kinds of salaries in Portugal, and just because the middle class keeps on getting smaller, it does not mean we all are making €800 a month, which is not enough for anyone to survive on no matter where in Portugal one lives. Many survive on that and less because they get government help, have work on the side, plant their own gardens, get assistance from family or all of these.

Wait a second, I was in lisbon, and the internet was very slow in the hotel i was staying at. So I am confused. Can you explain? I went a starbucks in Lisbon, and the internet was not "free" really either; any comments on that? Someone said that in Lisbon the internet is overloaded!

Hi there, I think most hotels I have stayed at in my life 3-5 stars have had terrible internet. That's just a thing :-) Regarding your Starbucks issue, I can't answer about what they are doing. Most proper Portuguese coffee shops I have seen have real Fiber internet. I'm sure there is some pockets where the internet is bad in Lisbon - as it's one of the oldest cities in Europe. But across the country so far, there is a wide coverage of fast 4G (normally 50-100 mbit) and fiber optic internet in many small towns and villages.
