There is a channel here on KZbin that absolutely cosigns with his sentiment. Zack the Russian has said the difference between Russia and Ukraine is Russian culture is that of slaves, due to the fact they were serfs until the end of WW1. Then immediately went under totalitarian Communist control, where they were still slaves. The Ukrainians on the other hand were never serfs, even under the rule of the Russian Czars. This is because of the deal the Czars cut with the Cossacks. They got freedom in exchange for fighting in the Russian Army instead of against it.

As a descendent of Western Ukrainians who went to Ukrainian school on Saturdays I can only tell you that sincerely the Cossacks are the most badass Ukrainians who keep the Ukrainian spirit alive and in Ukrainian too. It is heartening to see the real genuine and authentic Cossacks speaking of their history as warriors. The legacy of the Cossacks is a lot more complicated than "they lost every war they participated in" which is completely inaccurate (if they were an ineffective fighting force the czar and Soviets wouldn't have used them so heavily for their fighting). In most cases when it was an internal struggle in the Russian territories there were Cossacks on both sides, the Cossacks fought and succeeded in numerous campaigns and at times had established their own independent state/territories. Their biggest downfalls were numbers (too few to fend off larger enemies) the fact they were for the most part either semi nomadic and had no industrial base like their enemies and lastly the fact that Cossack is a term for various groups throughout Ukraine and southeast Russia, so as pointed out earlier there was good chance that if there was an internal fight within Russia or between Russia and Ukraine there would be Cossacks on both sides fighting each other.

During the middle 1500's to the late 1700's there was the Zaporizhian Sich, wich was a Proto-State of Ukrainian Cossacks. They fought against the Polish, the Ottomans and finally the Russians before being defeated and annexed. I find poetic how, more than two hundred years later, they are again defending Zaporizhzhia from the Russians

Please Nicolas tell the full story not edited history. Apart from a few periods they were allies with the Polish/Lithuanian Commonwealth when it was a major power in Europe. Occasionally, due to not getting full rights in the Commonwealth they rebelled against the Commonwealth with either Ottoman or Russian support. However, when the Polish/Lithuanian Commonwealth was dismantled during the partitions of Poland from 1792-5 by the Russian/Prussian and Austro-Hungarian Empires the Cossacks were defeated by the Russians etc and occupied. Cossacks and Russians have always had a love/hate relationship and Cossacks allied with many countries etc to defend themselves from Russian attempts to occupy and enslave them. They were rarely comrades in arms and usually only for brief periods in many hundreds of years of history of Central/Eastern Europe. They fought side by side with Polish many more times than they fought side by side with Russians. In fact during the Russo-Polish wars of 1920-21 Ukrainians Cossacks fought alongside Polish forces when the Polish defeated the Russians in the battle of Warsaw and forced Russians all the way back well into Russian territories. Basically only the Don Cossacks could be called Russian Cossacks. The rest were predominantly what are modern Ukrainians and have always had more hatred of Russia than any other country bordering their lands.
