What kind of boat we’ve been secretly dreaming about for the last 3+ years?
Living, traveling and working on our monohull gave us a lot of insight into what we did and did not like about our first boat and our cruising lifestyle. Because we value spending time with our families in the Midwest, we have fallen into a seasonal cruising pattern, which means our boat had been on the hard, in the path of hurricanes for several months every year. This got us thinking:
There must be a better way
After a zillion hours of research and countless pros & cons discussions, we’ve figured out the perfect set of criteria for our next boat. We lay it all out for you in this episode!
Hope you enjoy!!

As a very long time boat owner, I do not believe that old saying “The happiest two days”. Each time I sell a boat I feel like I am losing a piece of myself. Still, it’s all worth it.

I am gonna play devils advocate. A huge consideration in a big trailerable boat is what type of vehicle you will need to haul it. Big diesel, big fuel bills, big maintenance. Also, where will you store the truck and trailer when you are sailing?

I’m a Great Lakes/Fl sailor. I get your conundrum. I don’t get a tri for this stage of young family sailing. Where do you put a dinghy? Cat seems more child friendly. I would want more sailing time in a tri including high seas. Other than that your Kirk and Lauren analytics will lead you to what’s right for you and Renata and whoever appears next. 😮

Any foldable tri that you get will be only an interim solution as it will be primarily for protected waters. Cruising the Caribbean, the Bahamas and anywhere offshore will require a larger cat or tri. So you will need to be selling any foldable tri you get for something larger. The foldable tri will be going smaller than the Tartan and will be cramped with 3, and more cramped if you have another child. You indicated you like to see family and folding tri would allow you to trailer to their area, however they will not be able to stay onboard for a cruise longer than a day. A 38-39' cruising cat would allow them to visit you in more exotic locations like the Bahamas or Caribbean and it could spend hurricane season in safe locations with you on it. Just my 2 cents.
@kevinfisher1345
@kevinfisher1345 2 жыл бұрын
You do not seem to be getting the concept of being able to see family. They will be traveling to see family on a regular basis all the time, not going to take them out on long cruises. Having family come visit in the Carribean one weekend or one week every so many years is again not the point of being able to see family on a regular basis. So you are missing their whole point. There are also foldable tri that are blue water / ocean cruising. So not sure where you get that mistaken believe they will only be for protected waters. Not sure how many of those are trailerable though. But I am sure you could find a trailerable island hopper / coastal cruiser tri. I have a feeling they already have one in real time.

@@kevinfisher1345 It is the combinations of a trailerable trimaran that I was addressing. I agree there are offshore trimarans that are foldable like the Rapido 50, but they will not fold to the 8-10' max width that can be trailerable on roadways. So 30' like Corsair is probably the longest production folding tri that can be trailerable and that will have smaller internal space than their Tartan. I'm sure some people would sail a Corsair around the Caribbean but probably not the best for a family with a baby. The other point was that it was an interim step, yes , people do buy and sell boats, go up and sometimes down in size, but in normal sailboat markets, the buying and selling process costs $$$s and boats depreciate in value. That said, family ties and connections are important and strong and if that is top on the list, so be it, get a folding tri.
@kevinfisher1345
@kevinfisher1345 2 жыл бұрын
@@douglasrobbie9998 Yes trailerable will be key and hard to find. A lot depends upon on what all someone will want to trailer. I agree as you said most will only want, or can only trailer 8-11' width.

Hello trailer sailors! It's your mini-you, we're back on the same path!! And there's an abandoned foldable tri at the marina a mile from my house. Not quite as big as the last one you looked at. Edit: And I think a couple of us were clever enough to pick up on the catamaran misdirection and guess it would be a tri, but no one was thinking trailerable.

OMG!!! I've never posted before, but I've been following you from the beginning & this was the last thing I expected you to consider! I'm the proud owner of one of the first F31's made, hull #6, originally made in 1992 by Ostac in Brisbane, before Ian worked with Corsair & brought the molds to the USA. I've had her since 2000. She travels the waters of Long Island Sound, but has made it to Marathon several years back for a couple of weeks, something I'd love to repeat when I have a LOT more time. There are many pro's and con's to consider. I keep it in my driveway off season & can unfold it there & do all maintenance at home. It's an absolute blast to sail, but cruising on it compared to Soulianis would be like going from a Winnebago to a pop-top trailer. Also the motion of a light multihull (Cat or tri) through the water is quite different from a heavy monohull, just something to consider. All boats require a compromise, you pick what works for you. If you ever want more info from a long-term owner of one feel free to contact me. Best wishes!

"We are rushing from one attempt to slow down to another" My gf and I can totally relate. We have been commuting 45+ miles a day each way to work from our rental in the CA foothills... well "toehills" really. This lifestyle has taken its toll. We like the simple life of work, home, togetherness, hiking in the Sierra, biking, and traveling, and I am a skier and climber. BUT it's been tough with the commuting sucking up so much of our resources. So we just found a little place in town (Grass Valley) where we will be 10 minutes from our jobs, and a bike ride or walk to town for events and shopping or whatever. PLUS it has a two-car garage so I finally get to have my shop. I am renovating a trailer, and would like to ultimately create a custom trailer-building/ tiny house business. BTW, I'm so glad you mentioned the San Juan Islands. We love it up there, and if we could move to Bellingham WA, we would in a second. Amazing mountains and the maritime life. What could be better!

Rushing from one slowdown attempt to another? You need to discover the doldrums! But I don't think that is in your makeup, at least until you're at anchor again with no good weather window for weeks. So, the answer is a new boat and back to cruising. Then you will settle down to a casual lifestyle, at least when the wind is below 15 knots and the sea is not as confused as you may think you are at the time of this episode.. :¬) Webhead USA

I like it... I call mine an "RV that floats". I have a 1976 Ericson 35-2, built a goose neck trailer to accomplish the land travel, and bought a 1990 International 8100 off Craigslist to pull it. With a big winch on the back of the truck and a 4th axle on the landing gear of the trailer, I can launch from any boat ramp. My wife and I have taken our boat from Colorado to Washington and cruised the inside passage twice, (almost to Alaska).

So, speaking of hurricanes, did the other couple get the Tartan out of the way, there, back in Port Charlotte? I am so sorry! The devastation is awful….I hope the new owner was able to rescue the Tartan. Where did you see the 37’ Trimaran… were you in FL or Chicago? I cannot leave the typing like it wants. The Trimaran is more like week-long sails. But, you two have Wisdom from our God. And, you, both, are very good at investing. Not paying “boarding fees” helps in the payment of the boat. But, to sail across from Beaufort, NC to Bermuda, to the Azores, and on to Spain….takes 2 months. But, you can HOME SCHOOL it’s easy….could do that to 8th Grade….even all the way through High School to keep your children away from a perverted curriculum. ProjectAtticus just did that Crossing….and are now in Malta for Desiree to have their baby. Their boat is a 42’ inch-to-inch yacht built in NC. Forgot the name of it…dang….but, what you want to do with the Lakes and islands off North America is great GREAT! Well, I hope you reply. Also check @nautistyles. A trailerable tri-maran is NOT really a cruising sailboat in the traditional sense of cruising vessels. There's no substitute for displacement when it comes to a cruising sailboat that is ready for long distance blue water passage making. The displacement limit for most "normal" people when it comes to trailering is about 7500 lbs. And if you've trailered any boat that's more than 5000 lbs., you'd know there are a lot of serious challenges involved. The tow vehicle needs to be four wheel drive with a full tow package (heavy duty transmission and cooling system). Tankage on 5000lb boats by design is always very limited. The large fuel, water, and waste water tankage capability associated with the typical cruising vessel adds substantial weight which will severely affect the way a 5000 lb multi-hull sits and moves in the water. Additionally, the vast majority of available slips around the world are set up for mono-hull vessels- not multi-hulls. This raises the cost of berthing substantially in places where usable anchorages are in short supply. From an ergonomics perspective, there are no "roomy" trailerable mult-ihulls. The constraints trailerablity places on overall dimensions results in substandard headroom and limited, cramped quarters. Trailerable boats invariably fall into the category of weekend or overnight craft for a lot of reasons and trailerable triimarans are not immune to these significant challenges.

@@artsmith103 Anyone familiar with trailerable sailboats, whether Corsair trimaran or monohull knows that in terms of space and the suitability for cruising, they are not considered desirable or adequate. The Tartan 37 they have given up has much more usable interior space and the capability of supporting required "cruising" functions that involve fuel storage, water storage, sanitation, refrigeration, cooking, and storage for provisions. Going from the Tartan 37 to anything "trailerable" is going to be a major step down on all fronts except perhaps performance and portability. The last episode I recall seeing, they were talking about the need for more space with a growing family. Newsflash, a trailerable boat is obviously headed in the opposite direction.

I went thru the eye of Andrew in Miami and the aftermath and we survived, so I expect we'll survive this one as well. But I will admit that this one may have been the worst I've seen down here. We are dealing now with sheet flow which is flooding areas that actually made it thru the storm fine but are now getting flooded. Because of the timing and direction of wind flow, the damages were much higher than folks were expecting. And of course, the folks who decided moving here because the rules for covid were much less restrictive and caused the price of real estate here to skyrocket had no idea what they have gotten into. Like Katrina, I wouldn't be surprised to see the costs for rebuilding just to a livable level will be in the trillions. This is gonna take a while! With all the different dates, I am trying to figure out how far behind you really are? Have you already bought, sailed for many seasons, and sold the tri? Is Renata in law school?

This episode and the next do a bit of time traveling. We had been sitting on bits and pieces of footage over the past three years but think it’s helpful to explain the evolution of our thinking that brought us to the conclusions we’ve made and the reasoning behind why our next boat will look so drastically different from our first.

Could also look at the Hake Seaward 32 large for it size and trailerable, folding mast and hydraulic keel.

Narrow beam for its length. Maybe a seasickness problem.

Folks. This sounds amazingly good idea for the plans you have. Tris are so much fun and, getting used to a foldable trainable one would prep you for a bigger one if you needed to. I’m just on passage to my wintering ground and I’m not relishing all that decommissioning you are taking about. As a disabled sailor the boatyard is incredibly tough so I’m hoping to keep it short.

True! It’s not the heeling that is Lauren’s problem. But the motion itself. She’s been much less sick so far on most of the trimaran sailing we’ve done. It the jury is still out on whether it is THE solution for her.

There is a mile of pro's and con's for each type of boat. The only really big thing, is what suits YOU... There are fold-able ocean tri's. There are blow up shove in the boot tri's, and everything in between... A fast tri could be sailed up or down from the lakes to the Caribbean and save yourself a 5 day drive each way... It's all about what suits you...

Sailing requires effort in planning, prep, maintenance, and finally, sailing. The first 3 are foundational to go sailing. Great Lakes sailing means 4-6 month season at most, and the beginning of the season is freezing cold still. Focusing on sailing, and reducing all the other areas of effort to as close to zero, is a wise move, when you have many demands on time. The which boat discussion, lacks the context of life in general. Having sailed Georgian Bay a bit, I think a shallow draft folding trimaran, is a sensible modern approach to sailing that area.

Best wishes 🎉 Totally agree with a multi hull 👍🏻 After 3 monohulls, it is what we're after.......though not tralerable. Just an FYI. You family will come and visit as they have for many others that live aboard. 😊

What do "we" want in a new boat? Something that Lauren won't get seasick on. On that subject I refer you to "Sailing La Vagabonde" videos.

Great Posting kids! I just knew you couldn't be boatless for very long, it's in your genes now! I'm remembering when "Tula's Endless Summer" had the use of that tri-maran for several months and how much fun it was for them. Of course there are only two of them and space down below was limited at best. Yours would for sure have to have a larger main hull, but I'm sure your Sprinter Van could tow it without any issues. So looking forward to what you end up with! On a sadder note, the new owner of your Soulianis must just be heartbroken after Ian blew through! My sympathy goes out to them And you.

.... Well! .... to be quite honest ... if I got that correct ... a 40 foot trailerable had never crossed my mind .... did not even know they existed, never searched them ... have seen what I would imagine would have been in the 16 to 18 foot foldable day sailer ..... you certainly have my interest peeked ..... for a sec there I thought that was current day clip of a bump ... smilin .. that would be so cool too .... thx for the share .. as always .. never stop dreaming, just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans ....

Good luck..boat camping! I had a Santana 20 eith tall trailer and could step the mast. That too got really old really quickly. Saves the price of a slip and you can work on them as home. Speed can as you know be great. Good luck.

Went from a 26 trail able boat (a Seaward) to a 16 sailing hot rod. Did not work at all. For the last fifteen years no boat and during a period when I could have bought a world cruiser I failed to pull the trigger. Now I follow you and others but satisfaction is no longer.
