Our Norway hiking fail 😂

SO we were supposed to hike Trolltunga. The town Odda is in Hordaland county and it's at the base of the start of Trolltunga.
Because we went in May, there was still snow on top of the mountain. Every resource we read recommended a guide. Unfortunately only guide at that time is Trolltunga Active and they were only doing very limited tours. SO we went searching for some equipment to rent but failed LOL. If you do want to hike Trolltunga, the trials will be fine starting beginning of June and you can go without a guide.
ANYWAYS we decided to hike the waterfall hike Vøringsfossen. Due to poor signage, we ended up taking an alternative route. Also we found out the hard way that "moderately easy" in Norwegian standards is actually really hard.
At the end of the day...it was a hilarious adventure that still ended with an amazing view. And that's all we can ask for :)

This comment is late, but if you or your redheaded friend read this, the Norwegian fairytale creature the woman was talking about was the hulder. Sometimes women will pretend to be a hulder and dance for tourists passing by, to put on a show. The lady may have thought your redheaded friend was one of them. :-)

I love the fact that the hikeway has markings...... i wished exactly for that when we were in vegas in an area in red rock mountain park...we were somewhere in the canyon lost, trying to find a way up to the otherside...and i literally said... they need to have some kind of signes up😂😂😂 The waterfall was very pretty😄😄👍👍

CupofTJ yaaasss all canyons look awesome💜💜💜...the colors in red rock mountain park are beautiful, so vibrand ..its fun climbing around thos rocks...and ya, no markers....we had to go back up, didnt had time anymore to find the way up to the other side...we were going back and forth trying to find a way😂😂but south rim canyon near vegas... hm..expansiivvee...rather go to canyon national park.... next i wanna go to antelope canyon in az...where they have those narrow canyons with the beautiful red walls and red sand floors where u can see some sun rays peak in from above at the right time...😍😍 can only go there with tours. No self exploring..oh well.

Pretty much every hiking location, official park in the wild or pathways in the norwegian nature has signs with explanations or markings. Its maintained by various hiking organisations and official tourism office of Norway. Also, all across the norwegian mountains there usually are several lodges tourists can use for free to seek shelter in unforseen circumstances. They also provide food (canned) which one can use if needed.

11:10 The creature she asked if you were dressed like was a Hulder (in norwegian: Huldra) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hulder It's bascially a siren that would dwell in the wilderness, but had a fondness for running water and would lead men and children astray with songs into the water and let them drown, being taken by the stream. Another version of them preferred cold dark mines where they would tend to a coal kiln. Coal miners would take a tale of a Hulder in their mines positively, as she would watch over them and their fire while they slept.

lol, talking about difficulty standards being different in different countries, in Bavaria, hiking, climbing up mountains and walking ridges etc, with rucksacks, safety gear etc, its not uncommon to meet a German family of three generations complete with stroller (ok maybe I exaggerated that bit) out for a walk after lunch. Ad I am talking mountains, snow capped peaks etc, and they're just wandering along having a chat about last night's game. Too funny.

What the woman at the waterfall was talking about was a "hulder". According to Norwegian folklore, the hulder is a forest spirit that most often looks like a beautiful woman with golden hair and a cow's tail. In the tales they sometimes do seduce and lure away spellbound men.

Hiii yes! It is most locals speak English. Actually all we spoke to did! We did use a few Norwegian words like hello and thank you. They were REALLLY nice.

We Norwegians start learning English as soon as we start school, and most are able to speak conversational English.

Heres the thing, Pascal - we all understand English very well. But some are not comfortable speaking it, because the sounds are very different, and it requires some practice, which not everyone has. For example, most Norwegians have problems with the "th" sound, and tends to pronounce it with a sharp "t". And all our vowels are spoken similar to French. Younger people generally speak English ok-ish, although many forget to drop their local dialect. Which gives you the famous Norwegian-Oslo and Swedish way of speaking English.

It all depends on when and where you decide to visit. The winters here usually gets pretty cold, but summertime is for the most part great with stable temperature and weather.
