Former England manager Kevin Keegan has sparked controversy this week after saying he doesn’t like listening to ‘lady footballers’ commenting about their male counterparts during a football match. This is not the first time that we have heard this opinion from male sportsmen, but Kevin’s particular use of the word ‘ladies’ is what has riled people up, with some women even calling for the end of the word. Nadia thinks that the term ‘ladies’ is awful, and would be happy to see the back of it.

My kids (boys) don't like ladies commentating on the gentleman's game. Let them commentate on the ladies game. The women's game will never catch up, especially monetarily with the man's game. It has improved,but the difference in skill,speed and entertainment are miles apart.

Surely, comments from footballers that have played at the top level of world football are more relevant than comments from footballers that would not be ranked in the top ten thousand. We would hang on every word from Ronaldo and Messi. Hence, until recently, the panel of pundits would consist of talented world class players with years of experience at the top level including the likes of Lineker, Shearer, Wright, Le Tissier and, dare I say, Keegan. Women's football is improving but I would suggest that the standard of their game is barely above schoolboy level and as such their comments do not carry the same gravitas.

Anyone who knows anything about Kevin Keegan will know he's one of the most honest and genuine guys you'll ever meet who wears his heart on his sleeve. He certainly isn't sexist or the type of guy who would be condescending or disrespectable to women, or anyone come to that. @@gaskellr44 Female Hosts are, often, very knowledgeable as most are Daughters of famous footballers. The Female Guests contribute no more insight than the average male or female football fan does and there is never anything memorable when they are on the panel. It; 's just bland and instantly forgettable. Female Commentators are competent but there is no banter with their Co-Hosts and what drives me mad is the high-pitched screech when there is a significant goal. The male voices, with the odd exception, and much more pleasing to the ear. It's as simple as that.

Yes, and not every male ex footballer is up for banter as well, so that ballances it out. Outwardly you are probably not being sexist or mysoginistic, but on a subconsous level, your inate sexism is showing through. I can only go from what you have said. I do find some of the pundits more interesting than others, but you have only said that it is female pundits you don't care for, and have not pinpointed any male pundits that you don't prefer, hence showing your cards early in the discussion. I will try to mature as I enter my EIGHTH decade in May after watching thousands of matches, attending 1,770 games at 84 different stadia from Carlisle down to Plymouth. I, probably, need more experience as I am only in my 62nd year of going and watching matches on TV. For clarity, I am proffering the opinion that while not "all" Male pundits are interesting or knowledgeable,I am struggling to think of ANY female football conversation that is memorable. Can you recall ANY? Even one example? I watch WSL Highlights and the Women, rarely,if ever have different opinions which makes the shows BLAND. This is, particularly, surprising because as you know, Women are very individualistic in many other areas but it seems "Girl Code" that they are not allowed an alternative view or opinion. So how do you feel about the pitch of Female Commentators at moments of great excitement in a game?

As a female who went to premier league matches from childhood onwards, I, like KK and nearly every man on every panel talking about this, hate listening to female pundits commenting on the men’s game. Awful and just more woke box ticking which causes more trouble and doesn’t come from common sense. I work in hospitality and we always describe female customers as "ladies/lady" to try and be as respectful as possible. It can sound a bit condescending to say 'girl' and on the other hand, passive aggressive to say 'woman' so you could be criticised no matter what you say.

Why are they concerned about the skill gap between men and women football, just enjoy your women’s football and commentate/referee in your own genders competitions. Why cross over in men’s commentary/ officiating if women are doing so well in their respective sport. You can manage football well having not been a terribly good footballer. Alex Ferguson wasn’t especially talented. Neither was Arsene Wenger. They both enjoyed huge success based on their detailed understanding of the game. It’s both possible to manage and analyse football without having played internationally.

We're talking about punditry though. It's about the viewing experience as much as anything else. Football fans like seeing famous faces that they grew up watching giving their views on the game. I just don't get football/sports commentary, whoever delivers it. Obviously for radio it makes sense, but for TV? You don't get it at live games do you? Some bloke standing in the crowd shouting everything the crowd can see with their own eyes. Imagine it at F1...a man in the crowd shouting the drivers names as they fly past, speculating whether they will overtake in the inside or outside. It seems to me it's just a way of fluffing up content. Or it's a throwback to the days of radio...once TV came along there would have been loads of redundant commentators, so they just carried on doing it for telly.
