Jake Quickenden and wife Sophie recently posted an adorable Instagram video showing the moment their family found out if they were to welcome another boy or girl to the fold. As they cut into a cake to see a blue sponge, Sophie was visibly disappointed, forcing her to later post a statement explaining she had always dreamt about having a daughter. This got us thinking, is there anything wrong with feeling baby gender disappointment?

Yes after realising I was having a third boy, I literally cried in the shower for weeks. Not because I would not love my next boy but because I’d never have a girl. But three boys is amazing slightly different versions of each other and they get up to so much mischief together, wouldn’t change them 😍

As someone that just lost 2 twin girls at 18 weeks I didn’t care about the gender I just wanted healthy babies

Aw thank you. When I was struggling with infertility things like this really upset me. To have a healthy child, no matter the gender, is such a blessing.

Im the 3rd girl, my mum never really forgave me. I was a tomboy growing up but looking back from an adults perspective i think subconsciously my mum pushed me down the tomboy route, because she wabted a boy i always had short hair etc etc Its not a nice position to be in as the unwanted gender and in my experience the negativity continues your whole life

I’m so sorry to hear that! I hope you know you’re a blessing to this world and shame on parents who make children feel they are unwanted! I’m one of 8 girls in my family and my father always felt he was blessed with girls. Now that we’re all grown up there’s a day that goes by that he talks about how blessed his life has been because of his daughters. Children are a blessing but I feel like daughters are exceptionally caring and loving towards their parents. I’m from an East African culture where boys are considered a big deal but my father wasn’t having any of that nonsense.

It's totally normal to want a boy or girl after having the same gender repeatedly, i'm sure after the baby is born she will not feel this way as she will have that bond, but at least she's being honest, many parents feel this way despite also very grateful to just have a healthy baby.

Having a 4th boy when I was sure I was having a girl was a surprise but got over it in a half of a second

I don't like that the word "dissapointed" is used in this instance, but I don't think it's bad to want a boy or girl, even if you don't have what you hope for, you'll still love the baby regardless

After having 3 heartbreaking losses, I will never understand this ‘gender disappointment’ Every baby is such a special gift, boy or girl, you should just be grateful.

Your feelings are valid but so are the people who have a preference. I currently have a boy and would love a girl! One of each would be lovely. If I had two boys I'd still love them unconditionally.

When I was expecting my second child everyone was assuming I wanted a girl because my first was a boy. I always saw myself with sons so was shocked when a girl arrived. We did not find out the gender before because I wanted my husband to tell me after they were born, not a midwife, someone I had never met.

@@sadephillips9645adoption should Always be about the child Not about the parents...ITS Not the responsibility of infertile people to adopt...and ivf is Not working for everyone...and Not everyone can afford it....we should Stop judging...it must be hurtful for a lot of people to get over infertility..people should be more sensible and Not so judgemental

I came from a family of mostly women and I was sure I was going to have girls too. I was super excited when my first was a boy and then when I got pregnant with my second baby I wanted a girl because I wanted one of each and when it came to find the gender of the baby I was so excited and told myself it was a girl and then I come to know it was a boy. I was a little disappointed but excited at the same time. They’re best friends and love playing with each other and I couldn’t change that for anything. He truly completely our family!

Personally i dont agree with gender disappointment….some woman cannot have children at all so i think you should be grateful that you have a baby and the baby is healthy.

Nobody is saying they aren’t grateful for their babies, gender disappointment is completely normal. Women aren’t responsible for other women’s losses

Not a parent but I think people need to be mindful before having kids that nothing is guaranteed and not to have many expectations about gender and what the kids might be like.

It’s really weird that parents need boys and girls. Like… what difference does it make. None of them are yours. You can play with them however you like.

I think it's the fact she's sharing it online so the child will always know that their mum wanted them to be a girl. You can't help how you feel but you can control what you do about your feelings!

People are going to feel how they feel at the end of the day and I'm not entirely sure it's as black and white as saying is it "Ok for people to feel disappointed" over the gender of their baby. Some women can't have children at all so on the one hand you should be happy with the fact you can conceive in the first place. But at the same time if Jake Quickenden's wife was hacked off that she's having a 3rd boy then who is it even hurting/annoying that she feels that way? I will say that if she is THAT BOTHERED could she not adopt a girl?

I was so scared to have a boy I really prayed for a girl and when I got a girl I felt relieved. The reason why is because I’m scared of becoming a single mum and raising a boy. I am scared of the area I live in and the male influences around the area and also the fact I don’t have any male friends or role models around. I have a daughter who is 16 and she is doing so well she plays piano and is very well educated and has lots of female role models around and it’s easier. We are so close. I love boy children too absolutely love them but I felt so scared when I was pregnant, maybe I’d fail at being a boy mum?

I have had a stillbirth and 2 miscarriages as well as a living child. I totally think gender disappointment is real and ok. I don't think we should demonise anyone for having a hope and dream about their babies. I am going to be disappointed if my current pregnancy is not the gender of my stillborn baby - of course I will love them exactly as they are whoever they are. But that's just the truth. Let's stop being so mean to people being honest about their experiences.

I think its ok to be disappointed..but you shouldnt document it like that because the kid might see that someday and it must be very hurtful...thats not cool

I feel if you are going to be very disappointed then don't have a baby, if you are going to be even slightly disappointed then dont film it for the child to see and always feel unwanted/like a disappointment!

I've been struggling with depression and gender disappointment for two years now. Despite loving my son dearly, I yearned for a daughter. At 44, with my husband not wanting more children, I'm finding it challenging to cope and move forward. My heart and mind are still adjusting to this unexpected path.Honestly, I'm struggling to accept our family dynamics. Two years ago, I welcomed another precious son, but my heart longed for a daughter. I had saved some of my barbies and dolls and princess books.Loving him unconditionally, yet grieving the loss of that daughter dream. Now, at 44, with my husband complete, I'm grappling to find closure.
