We've been brothers for more than 39 years, and not every moment has been all hugs and rainbows. But somehow we have avoided the thing that every reporter now feels obligated to ask me about, whether I am going to feel compelled to compare my success with yours.

John, he's a first-time author less than two weeks out from his release date. Remembering his own *name* is close to being a miracle at this point. In fact, having any thought in his head other than "oh god, oh god, oh god" on repeat is miraculous.

"I honestly feel like every time something good happens to you, it's a good thing happening to me." What a mellow lesson I've inherited from you just now, Hank. Every positive contribution to the world just ends up bettering us all, really, and doesn't have to evoke jealousy or brew rivalry. After that rather blissful epiphany I'm going to continue my day basking in the successes of others and reveling in the unique glow of my own. Thank you.

John's video on Tuesday got me thinking about how I can support my younger brother better. Alas, I can't buy him billboards or sponsor teams for him (insufficient funds, also I think he would find that uncomfortable), but I can find other ways to show him that I'm hugely proud of him and glad we're friends. And I am grateful to have had that video prompt me to do it. Thanks, vlogbrothers, for reminding me to be a better sibling.

The nice thing about sibling rivalry is, that it becomes less crushing the older you get. Now when my big brother and I were still at home I really tried to out do him in everything, I wanted to be the better child. And I was weirdly successful, but my parents never acknowledged this which frustrated me endlessly but as I grew older and moved out, I realized that you can't compare siblings in terms of success. Because for my parents the most important thing is that we are happy and healthy. Our sibling rivalry has shrunk to be almost non existent, except when we are playing a game. Beating my brother at any kind of game is still one of the best things in life

I try really hard to remember that art isn't a ladder, it's a tree, and sure you can climb higher but there is no top there's a bunch of diverging paths because art demands diversity! It would be really boring if your work was just a replication of John's, but I doubt that'd be the case because you are different people with different stories to tell, and regardless of how well you told it and how well it's received, the world is a better place because you made something new. An Absolutely Remarkable Thing comes out September 25th!

I’ve seen first hand how much other people’s definitions of stress can strain a relationship. I feel like my little brother has always tried to compare himself to me, and I wish he didn’t feel like he had to. I’ve been at a expensive east coast college for few years, and he just started community college. He’s been down on himself in large part because people are telling him he’s worse off for going to community college. I wish he could see he’s just as smart and as talented as me or his friends, if not more so. It’s hard not to compare yourself to others, especially in your family. I often think will I be able to be as good a man as my father? I think with concerns around success there’s also an underlying desire to prove yourself as worthy. I wish my brother could see that he is worthy of feeling intelligent, and that the standard of success he’s comparing himself to is BS. Thanks for this video Hank, a little more reflection than I planned for today but much needed.

My brother & I had the same thing. It got really rough for us for awhile, but as of a year or two ago he's found a good wife & a career he enjoys &--though he still feels inferior to me in some ways--he is happy with his life. Hopefully your story will turn out just as good if not better.

I'd call it sibling chivalry, too bad it doesn't rhyme. Funny thing about success is it varies so much from one period of time to the next for people. Just look at the Video Game Pianist. He is the guy who did the 10 minute video of himself playing Nintendo music blindfolded on the piano. Ask pretty much anyone in the gaming community and they've seen it. Today he does streams on Twitch, still playing the piano and just as well, and he gets maybe 20-30 viewers. How does that even happen, it's a total mystery to me.

Congrats on the new book. As the mom of four children, I teared up a little when I saw all of the fun and helpful ways that you brother secretly went around promoting your book. First of all, I found your commentary on competition and most of the commentaries you make interesting and powerful. Secondly, I loooved your book. I hate most books because school has forced me to read gory, horrible books as well as the fact that I am incredibly picky with what I like. So, when I picked up your book, I couldn't stop reading. I was consumed and happy and sad and I'm pretty sure I have a picture of parts of your book on my phone. It was so beautiful, and I wrote a similar character for a couple pages in my notebook the next day. I was up until midnight on the Monday after I bought it and only regretted it the next day. My Nana has it now and I hope she reads it soon because it's sooo good! I am also writing, and my 23-page book fuelled by the worst year of my life that somehow manages to be hopeful despite all that happens to my character without factoring the diversity of the MC is my passion. (She is on my profile picture, actually!) I love both courageous young women, in my book and your book) with all of my heart. I appreciated and was surprised by your indifference to the fact that April was bisexual and that it was just a thing that existed. I liked your commentary on how your identity reflects on your image, especially in our landscape of Fame today.

As soon as my brother and I were old enough to understand, our parents sat us down and explained, "One day - though hopefully not for a long time yet - we will not be here, and all you will have is each other. There will not be a single other person on the planet who remembers that family holiday, or that inside joke, or that big celebration... or even just the daily ins and outs of life growing up. You can choose to make an enemy of that person, or you can choose to form a strong friendship with the best ally you'll have in your life. Choose wisely." Our relationship has obviously changed over time, as we grew through different developmental stages, as I left home and moved to another city, as he finished high school, etc. But I think it's one of my greatest successes to know my grown-up little brother still feels he can come to me for advice or somewhere safe to vent or even just coz.

I feel like the thing that is more frustrating to me than "comparing myself to others" is when others judge you based on _their_ personal definitions of success. It is so infuriating when I tell people exactly what my career goals are and then they say how ridiculous they think that is. Like, I know that creative professions can be uncertain and don't always pay well, but I want to do what fulfills me, not just what lines the pockets of a big company. *Amendment:* If you are fulfilled, happy, and feel successful working for a big company, that is GREAT, because it means you're doing what you need to do for you. All I was saying was that I know what I need and that it's different from that.

I can't wait to see you guys in person and read your book :D On the topic of sibling rivalry, my brother tells me I am excessively competitive, and not everything is a competition. To which I reply he is wrong! But really it's always in a joking way. Siblings are great.* I have 7 older brothers, and for the most part it's like having built in best friends.

I think it helps that you have both shared success as a unit versus just individually. That must be so rewarding :)

I went frame by frame when you flipped through your book and was able to read the whole book that way. Good read.

I have the exact same relationship with my older brother! We love each other but will fight to the death on a minigolf course. But i will also always be happy for his successes, as he will be for mine.
