Love the keys... in the winter. Boondocking is not easy but can be done for a while. If you want to visit all the national parks you have to go to Key West and take a charter flight or boat to the Dry Tortugas.

In October 2018, we went to Key West with our Roadtrek 190P and had no issues finding a spot to park (not overnight) and it was free. We really enjoyed our visit to Key West and it was definitely a place to go for us. We had a campground at less than an hour drive from Key West.

"Unpleasantly loud", LOL, almost couldn't HEAR you! Thank you for visiting this key, I have been there many times. I grew up on SINGER ISLAND, back when it was this cute lil mom 'n' pop community. Nowadays, it's full of the big high-rise, name-brand hotels, which kind of ruined it for my family. We used to take the deep-sea fishing tour out of the Marina just under Blue Heron Bridge every year. Thank you for your charming reviews of Florida - LOVE it!

Just went there for a day in January 2024, and your crystal ball was spot on, things are fully back to normal. Like you I left the Keys in 2020 after kayaking out among the islands only to come back and find civilization all topsy turvy with the pandemic. Thanks for the ideas for next time!

My family lived in Key West from 1952 to 1957, my younger brother was born there, As far as I am concerned, it was a great place to be a kid. My older brother and I both had jobs delivering the Key West Citizen, and the Miami Herald. My father was in the Navy Submarine Service and was assigned to two different Subs while we were in Key West the SS408 (i think), that was the Sennent and the Picada 358 (I think). I do not think that my brother and I realized how much it helped that we went fishing a lot in Garrison Bight, and regularly brought home Yellow Tails, Mangrove Snapper, and Grunt. We also brought home an occasional Spiny Lobster.I loved it down there, except for the humidity.

I think i will pass on Florida altogether after seeing Key West now but thanks guys for the free tour, just an expensive tourist trap, and no boon docking for RVs or even a smaller Class B and to cramped of an area. Looks like i will be traveling back to Colorado, Utah, Yosemite, and Lake Tahoe again and through northern Calif and Oregon coastline and up to small towns in Vancouver Canada, the most scenic parts of North America as far as i am concerned.
@forry1004 жыл бұрын
Peter, there is more to Key West than the tourist trap spots and you can still find some unofficial spots to stop at. Check out Traveling Robert too, he has a lot of Florida Key videos, even after many trips to Key West, I have found places to stop at that I use to drive by. Robert also some great videos on places you mentioned. Not sure I will ever go to Yosemite, but he has a great video of it from last summer.

Hogfish is a kind of snapper. There are a lot of cool islands, and stuff to do before you ever get to Key West. The views and nature are free for all. I usually park my car, and ride bike through the “tourist area”. There is so much to see that requires little or no money at all. Just depends on what you’re looking for.

It is in fact somewhat expensive, but we did not find it too crowded. We had a campground that was less than $75 per night with a Good Sam 10% discount at less than an hour drive from Key West and it was perfect.

I like your drone footage good job. We stayed at Boyd’s just a few days after you. We drove our Roadtrek CS adventurous XL into Key West without much trouble but you do have to look for parking carefully. I prefer riding our electric scooters. Beautiful location but we had to book it back to Seattle right after being here as we saw the lock down coming.

Sorry for the late comment but we drove our 24' Winnebago Fuse into Key West and found free parking on a street not too far from the southernmost point marker at the end of February this year (2021). It was on a Thursday - of course the crowds weren't too bad because of the pandemic but there were still lots of people. Had our 40 pound Toller (dog) with us (with water for her). Lots of dog friendly establishments. :)

We have been trying to book a month in the keys for a while now and it’s almost impossible to book just a month. Most places will only let people that have booked before or booking for the entire winter season. We have found the resorts will tell you they don’t book monthly stays until April or May and then when you call back they are all booked! It’s been so frustrating! We than decided to try a few places on the tip of Florida and they are requiring a 90 day stay to book too! We should have booked the state parks instead of trying to book a resort, but those you have to book at midnight 12 months in advance too! Great video by the way Key West looks so cool!

RV Lifestyle, found this video and of course you from a friend of mine that spends his winters at Boyd's. I was glad to see you were not like so many and did not have your hand out throughout the video to support you. We spend ours at Southern Comfort in Florida City that keeps us close to the Keys, but far cheaper, close to Biscayne and the Everglades and our friends in Miami. If I am not mistaken this was your first time to Key West. Want to note a few things, first I do drive through Key West twice going in and before we leave in our car, but to get around easily we rent a scooter. This saves on parking cost too, almost as much as you will pay for the scooter and gets you in and out of the free parking spots easily. Key West also has a free Duval Loop bus service and the parking at the city bus garage is the best deal in town. The line at the Southernmost Point is one of the shortest I have seen and what most do not know is there is a live webcam across the street with audio too. But beware of what you might see and hear, lol. Per the expense, you can combine the tourist sites into packages and save a lot. Also you can see more by getting off of Duval, like your stop at First Flight. One of our favorite restaurants, not on Duval is Blue Heaven. On Duval is the Mexican restaurant attached to Cowboy Bills, the only country bar in Key West with large portions for not a lot. Another family friend place to see, that costs very little and is RV friendly (not trailers) is Fort Zachary. We have made trips to Key West every winter for years and always find new things to see and have done it without spending a lot, of course that means no drinks for my wife. We have found more to do, things that somehow we have walked our drove by in both Key West and the rest of the FL Keys because of Traveling Robert. In fact because of a place in the Miami area that Robert mentioned, we stopped in a few years ago and this winter became good friends with the owners son and that resulted in a free camping spot that extended our time in Southern FL. I think may people can find so many things to see and do, even places to avoid from videos like yours and our friend Traveling Robert. We will check out more of your videos as your quality seems good and unlike far too many you, like Robert do not beg for money.
@forry1004 жыл бұрын
Forgot to ask, how did you get away with the drone footage or is that video you had to buy? We were down in Key West before the Keys were closed, but Mallory Square was shutoff and I got "warned" about flying my drone. The cops were cool with me, I had only went up to 100' and had already brought it down by time they got to me. But I did get my footage of Mallory Square empty at sunset, although the parking lot was not.

Looks like they've upgraded Boyds since I was there 40 years ago on my motorcycle. Heck, Key west isn't even motorcycle friendly. Scooter or bus and a scooter may be taking your life in your hands. Don't know if I'll go back to Key West and stay there but I surely will return to the keys at some point.

QUESTION: If there is no 30 amp service available for shore power, does a Leisure Travel Van have a control such as the Xantrex inverter control, have the ability to use an adapter on your shore power cord to plug in to a garage outlet and charge at 10 to 15 watts by making a change on the Xantrex inverter? The Winnebago Travato and the Coachmen Beyond have that function but I have yet to see someone show that on a Leisure Travel Van.
@RVLifestyle4 жыл бұрын
Sure, you can charge at 10 to 15 watts but it will take a much longer time. I do not use theXantrex inverter. I replaced it with a 2000 watt Victron inverter.
