Robby, That old Amp Meter requires all the current to flow through it. This means you need at least 6ga copper wire from the alternator to the control panel and back to the battery. More modern amp meters use a shunt and measure voltage across the shunt and convert to Amps. This keeps the main power leads out of the panel and allows you to use much smaller gauge wiring. If you wanted to safely handle a 240A alternator, you'd need to use 0000ga (4/0) wire.

Let's see, 240 amp alternator pushing through a 60 amp meter what could possibly go wrong. Let's not mention using the positive side of coil that is probably going through a resistor wire or ballast resistor. SMH. Keep the fire extinguisher handy. Really hope you are lucky.

this - it has literally nothing to do with voltage, it has to do with the path of the circuit. if it were running at higher voltage then technically it would pull less amps and actually cause less load on the wiring.
@petersgrayson
@petersgrayson Ай бұрын
I think you hit the nail on the head, I commented elsewhere, but the high voltage will mean the battery will want to charge (yes overcharging) and pull more current naturally. I wonder with the regulator misbehaving over volting to 18v rather than typical 14.4v the battery was charging and pulling too many amps through the wiring and amp meter. With the regulator/alternator fixed and the battery likely fully charged (not being overcharged) means less current is now being drawn. The fundamental issue might still be their, just hidden until the battery is low again 😮.

Mount one of those small round coolers with a spout... so you can put hot coffee in it to provide a hot warm drink. When on a rescue and it's cold. I can see you know exactly what you're doing and you wired everything correctly but it's your explanation that's driving people crazy. Over voltage doesn't melt wires over current draw melts wires. You can run thousands of volts through an 18 gauge wire but only in milliamps. It's that crazy ohms law thing people keep jabbering about. My qualifications don't matter, you done good! Keep up the great work!

The one thing you must keep in mind, however, the amout of voltage you can apply to any wire is limited by the amount and quality of the insulation surrounding the wire. Just like the thickness and material of the pipes and hoses in a hydraulic system.
@doggonedk
@doggonedk Ай бұрын
@@guypehaim1080 arc over is a completely different scenario than overcurrent. How much insulation is on teaser leads and they carry thousands of volts. But not much current milliamps.
@guypehaim1080
@guypehaim1080 Ай бұрын
Remember, voltage doesn't flow, so these leads are not carrying voltage, rather they are carrying current. Also, I am aware of arc over. This is the principal result of insulation failure. This is how many unintentional groundings and short circuits occur. Insulation is designed to contain voltage.@@doggonedk

Something for Chads substitute to consider... If you are using a one wire alternator you don't need an amp meter, only a volt meter. The volt meter will tell you if it is charging or not, and removing the amp meter eliminates the long wires between the alternator and battery which will limit it's max charging amps. Also with the current wiring, when you are running a winch and the motor is running, the new alternator can push up to 250 amps through a 60 amp meter.... with exciting results. So. Eliminate the amp meter... Shorten the wire between the alternator and battery, and use a battery cable size wire to handle the current.. Drop in a volt meter where the Amp meter was, and you will have a much more reliable (and less fiery) charging system. I love all you guys and what you do. Keep it up and remember. A failure is just an opportunity to learn and anytime you are building something from whole cloth, not just assembling a kit, there will be many many opportunities to learn.

The ammeter on the dash was warning of the problem all along when it just about pegged at 60 amps and stayed there. On the old systems where all/most power is routed through the ignition switch one does have to even more so keep a watchful eye on the ammeter. With the higher amperage alternator, which can get you into trouble faster, it will be a very good idea to put in relays with their own fuses to carry those heavy loads more directly so that the ignition switch and dash wiring will no longer be taking the hit. The ignition switch along with the others will last much longer afterwards too as will the devices they power. Starter solenoids which can draw 10 or more amps along with the starters will also benefit if you put a relay between them and the starter circuit on the ignition switch. I've been moving away from internally regulated alternators and have been modifying them to use an external adjustable regulator that can be easily and inexpensively changed out in minutes for less than $30. Internal regulators are more prone to heat damage and take a 10 minute $20/$30 repair into having to swap an alternator after handing over $150, $250, $350 or more plus with the external regulator you can quickly throw in a manual switch to regulate things yourself in a pinch if a regulator fails. This is becoming more popular now on extreme service and expeditionary vehicles that are operated in harsh environments. The most common problem I'm seeing on internally regulated alternators is the solder connections on them failing leading to a tear down and rebuild just due to a failed connection due to internal heat. Lesson learned is to pay attention to your gauges as they need to be read and understood especially on older systems that aren't going to lead you by the hand and ring bells, flash red lights, etc when there is a problem. Only hate here is to see young people needlessly suffering from these simple and very easy to avoid problems that us Old Cogitators are very well aware of. Best!

@@frankhage1734 Usually those kits come with a 40 amp or better lighting relay for each bank of lights that is supposed to have a fused line in coming directly off the battery so really only should add a few milli-amps of load to the dash wiring. Whats sad is that Whisker's appears to have been set up originally with a main power relay (that rectangular metal can relay) that seems to have been at least partially bypassed. Hillbilly made a reference to this when he commented that the 32 amp charging circuit had been routed through the dash instead of directly to the battery despite already having a 60 amp alternator upgrade. Just the 60 amp upgrade would have required the the 9 or 8 AWG wire for 32 amps routed through the dash be upgraded to a 5 or 4 AWG wire while for a 240 Amp charging system you might need to jump to two 0 AWG cables in parallel to meet the safety min of 300 Amp cabling to support the 240 Amp max load. A single 04 is only good for around 260 amps so 40 amps shy on the safety factor. It gave me pause back in the day (70's early 80's) when a Ford medium duty commercial vehicle came with the old 32 amp charging system while a small 4 cylinder car such as a Dodge Omni came with a 60 amp or higher. People needing a jump would choose the Big Ford over the Little Omni because by conventional logic the bigger vehicle should have been much better suited for jump starting a vehicle with a dead battery but many times quite the opposite was true. This is why adopting a 48 volt architecture for vehicles has been sorely needed for many years now as at just 12 volts you need insanely large AWG cabling to support high wattage devices. By simple calculations 3000 Watts at 12.5 volts is a 240 amp system which requires 240X1.25=300 amps cabling while 3000 Watts at 48 Volts is 62 Amps so 62*1.25=77.5 Amp cabling so only around 6 to 4 AWG. Of course this is the simplistic view and there are other considerations that could allow up or downsizing to a degree. Best!

Hello Robby, Boss and Crew, I'm probably to late but you should replace the ammeter with a voltmeter. That way you don't need to have all the juice going up to the dash and back to the battery. shorter the cable to the battery the better. Good luck. p.s. I think you do great wiring, very clean.

Hi Robby, what you should buy is a Flir thermal imaging camera. This allows you to see exactly which wires are getting hot, for example. very handy . Greetings Theo from the Netherlands.

Between this channel, fab rats, and Matt's off road recovery, there's only one, functioning with zero mechanical issues, vehicle at a time.

I always use a volt meter, not an amp meter. I don't recall the exact wiring for an amp meter but from what I recall all the accessory power has to go through it including the alternator and most only go to about 30 amps.
