Our Subaru Has Died! Crosstrek Engine Failure at 120K Miles.

Well since we bought our Crosstrek used, I've known the engine was a bit of a ticking time bomb. But I didn't expect it to fail in our driveway! Time to pull our favorite mall crawler into the shop and get to work on her.

150k on my 2016, so far zero issues. CVT is running great too. I have been on top of all the maintenance and changed the CVT fluid also. Lets see how far it goes. I might make a review of it on my channel.

If you are always woeking on your Subaru, of course you wouldn't have engine problems. But statistics (the truth) about boxer engines is they have a ton of quirks. They constantly need attention or rebuilds. It is a terrible engineering issue. You have to pull the whole block if you need to so much as get a valve cover off. Dumb design.

As someone considering a Subaru for the first time your message is very concerning. As the owner of a 1999 Corolla with 120K miles the one thing I can say is that I have NEVER had to work on my Corolla no matter how much I might enjoy wrenching.

@@MarkasTZM Just to clarify I've never had a powertrain issue on 13 Subarus, the oldest was purchased new in 2003 with 117k of pure NY city miles. In comparison to a 96 Honda Civic which is close to a Toyota Corolla, I would say both the 96 Civic and 03 Outback have been equally reliable upto 120k-ish. The Subaru has differentials to maintain, but it's just fluid. If I was concerned I wouldn't have just bought another Subaru last month.

@@asmongoldsmouth9839 I've heard that before, but I've taken valve covers off in Subarus with no engine removal needed. It's like doing spark plugs. No easy task, but doable. Head gaskets need the engine pulled just because the bolts are longer. If you don't take care of your maintenance, I wouldn't recommend a boxer or some turbos. Where some engines can go 10-12k an oil change with the right synthetic oil, a Subaru is lucky to get 6k. I'm guessing someone went over 6k here or revs up the engine a lot since this 2.0 has little power.

I would look for an FB25B from a 2013-2019 Outback/Legacy or 2011-2018 Forester. It's basically a bored out version of the FB20B you have and they share many parts. 175 hp is a descent increase from 148. Not sure if you'd need a different ECU or not. The newer FB25D that's in the is 2020+ Outback/Legacy, 2019+ Forester, and 2021+ 2.5L Crosstrek is direct injected and I think that would bring more complication with the swap. You could go all out and swap a FA24F from the Ascent and Outback Legacy XT for 260 hp, but I would assume they are hard to come by for a reasonable price and your 5MT might not handle the power.

A recommendation for In the future, for anyone who has to do this, I would put two large sheets of cardboard on the radiator before pulling the motor out... just gives it a layer or two of protection. I hear people here bragging about their Subi's making it 130k-170k and they are happy! My Toyota's are barely getting broken in by that time. I bought a Forester thinking they would be on par but after burning a valve (FB25) and doing some research it seems like this is just typical. I'm going to rebuild the heads (if the block is still good), put a few thousand miles on it and sell it. I love everything else about this car but c'mon. And yes, I know about the 2.4 . Love the channel. Question .The heater core coolant hoses (2) that come out of the firewall and plug into the engine just above the starter. Do they enter the engine as Left to left and right to right. Or do they criss cross? Thanks!

for those saying to swap to an FB25 - that is a really bad idea,. the FB25 are rubbish and the junkyards want stupid money for them. most early FB25 ive worked on burned large amount of oil. i even seen some use a quart in 300 miles. the FB20s are more reliable and dirt cheap - i just got one from a local yard for $300. if you are after power fix it with a used stock engine and then trade it in for a WRX

Don't give up on your Subaru just yet. The single layer, graphite coating OEM gaskets will fail every time. Get yourself a triple layer steel gasket.

Hey im just gunna say now after getting the forester. First off as an ex subaru mechanic the new gen of the fb motors are junky but decent. *OIL CHANGES AT 4K MILES AND CHECKING AND ADDING OIL AS NEEDED WILL MAKE THEM LAST* and flushing the cvt at 60k coreectly will keep them on the road

15:44 judging by the amount of sludgy gunk buildup on that tube before you wiped it off, I would say this is an infrequent oil change and Pennzoil motor. I would also suggest changing the PCV every few years or 15-20 thousand miles. When I heard you crank it over it was clear there is no compression so may be a sign of other problems. good luck

Penzoil motor! Haven’t heard someone say that in a while. About 3 or so years ago the api “sn plus” update required that motor oils can no longer include calcium as it was detonating under heavy load and damaging turbo motors. Calcium was the main detergent in most oils 😵‍💫😵‍💫 which means pretty much all oil is now going to create that same sludge that we saw the paraffin in the penzoil create.

an air-oil-separator should be standard equipment on all Subaru engines. direct injection and pcv systems do not play well with each other. I really need to get an AOS for my WRX, or better a double AOS system

Would a 2.5 be a direct swap with the driveline and tranny? You might look into dropping a 2.5L in there. I would be interested to see what/how much you could bore/stroke the engine, or what more aggressive cam profile you could run. But as far as an engine swap, I'd look into the 2.5

WTF did you do to this car? I have over one MILLION miles on Subarus, and I have replaced exactly ONE set of head gaskets on my '05 Legacy, and then I proceeded to put 200,000 miles on it. This has been the ONLY engine problem I have EVER had with them. I know friends with easily over 200, 300,000 miles on these motors. You are either really unlucky or well, I don't know, negligent? Oh, I see, you overheated it. Thats not the cars problem thats the owners problem. And are you saying that you don't have a temp gauge? I'm calling bullshit on that one. Every Subaru I have ever owned has has a temp gauge. Its weird how people who neglect maintenence or do improper maintenance or midifications on Subarus blame the car, but Toyota can replace millions of frames, strip out millions of head studs, and Honda can have oil dilution leading to engine failure and they get a pass. Boxer engines aren't for everyone, they require proper maintenence.

My 2009 Subaru Forster doesn’t have a temp gauge it has a blue temperature light when cold and I assume if it over heats it would be a red light I have never had happened I have 170,000 miles no problem with my Subaru yet just normal mantis

@@RKmndo That's not entirely true. 2nd gen Crosstreks can only show a temp gauge in the color MFD in the center of the dash, which is only on the Limited trim in the US. The Base, Premium, and Sport don't have the color MFD and the instrument cluster still just has an idiot light.

you should definitely contact Subaru of America, this is rare, the transmission issues are what affects these, apart from oil burning at high mileage. maybe they will help you get a discount on a new block. also they may ask for this block.

The best safe way to improve power, as suggested by a wrxer, is just to put in a nice mild cam. That’s it, no necessary improvements required to handle higher power boosts. No electronic changes necessary also, Just a slightly livelier more.

That's Y I don't like any urabuS,, they all typically use the same motor that blows either a head gasket or connecting rod, otherwise any one can drive em, they're comfortable wether your short or tall or heavy they accommodate alot of people but they have the too much common issue of motor failure, you've gotta be mechanically inclined and eager enough to face taking care of it on your own if the warranty has run out

The head gasket issue is more of an ej25, the motors on this is an FB which is typically more reliable, the only issue this have is oil burning at high miles, the issue this have is actually the cvt trans.

They typically blow head gaskets at this mileage. You can ask any mechanic who knows what they are talking about. The other thing to go is the cvt.

Head gaskets is yesteryear. The fa and fb series motors solved those problems that the ej series was known for. It ended up being due to the graphite head gaskets anyways.

This is a 5MT, not CVT. CVT is good for 60k, Manual is good for 30k like the diffs since there is 1/3 of the fluid.

I just put the bolt or nut back where I found it. So like take off the exhaust headers, Put all the bolts back into the head. Then they won't get misplaced. Though the first time I did a motor pull I just labeled and baged everything. It worked, but was really tedious. Now that I'm really familiar with motors, even if I find a stray bolt I didnt put back. I usually can figure out where it went.

120k is not so bad. After 13/14 years it is good to change car anyway to get new technologies infotainment system. My Pontiac vibe has 230000 km and runs well. It is now my wifé’s car and i bought a nice Bronco Sport 2021 Badlands. I like the front and rear cameras the blind spot alert, safe breaking, 400w inverters and lot of 12v plugs. Very nice and confortable seat. Very good on road and offroad. Incredible in the snow. Safari roof and big sunroof, apple car play, android auto. .. i can continue ever and ever. After 14 years it is worth the price.

2012-2014 fb20 impreza and crosstrek are notorious for oil consumption.

These issues are why I buy volvo instead. If you can get over the price premium they are much better quality.

Boxer are like rotary, bulbs engine . I see so much boxer engine that dont make 100k .

Almost 80k on my current 2019. Hasnt skipped a beat since I bought it at 50k miles and over a year of daily use) Regular oil changes (4000-6000 miles and use a quality filter) . And change your coolant around 70-100k and itll be fine.
