On the Origins of “Dominican” The first recorded use of the word "Dominican" is found in a letter written by King Phillip IV of Spain in 1625 to the inhabitants of the Spanish colony of Hispaniola. In this letter, which was written before the arrival of French settlers on the Western side of the island, the King congratulates the "Dominicans" for their heroic efforts in defending the territory from an attack by the Dutch fleet. The term or demonym ("gentilicio") "Dominican" was used in reference to the Dominican Order - after their patron Saint Dominic - which had been a key institution and element in shaping the island's post-Columbian religious and civic identity for over a century. This letter can be found today in the "Archivo General de Indias" in Seville, Spain

@@astroprotector Do some research .Those eyes originally came out of southern Africa!. The migration was out of Africa & yes they have those eyes because of the sunlight being strongest on the equator.

Our family knew that we were Native and African and some European but not sure what ethnicity. 40% African (Ghana), 40% Native American (Cherokee Nation), 6% Melanesian, 6% Iberian Peninsula, 5% German, and 3% Southeastern Asia. I was surprised that all of my African Heritage came from one place in Africa. I had mine done at Yale New Haven Lab because of health issues.

When you say Iberian Peninsula doesn’t mean that you’re just Spanish, it means that you can be both Spanish or Portuguese unless the test specifies exactly if it is only Spain or Portugal. I don’t understand when people talk about Iberian Peninsula they assume that they are just Spanish, why?🤔

USA tends to demonize 'history' and use propaganda to legalize ignorance for the benefit of economic hegemony. Por ejemplo, Iberian peninsula has always included Portugal but the failure and ignorance allows USA to define geographical reality in its own terms, which is against the common knowledge base. Latino (comes from the origin of the language-Latin includes French, Portuguese, Italian, etc but the US definition (even in legal racial categorization) says only Spanish speakers (hispanohablantes) can be Latino while negating the other Latin origin languages.

Olivia Gomez, not shocked but surprised. We knew west Africa was going to come out as well as Spain but we were surprised with the Irish, British, South Asia and Papua New Guinea results. Oh and the middle eastern and European Jewish!

Spain had a group called the Conversos which is probably were the Jewish came from. A lot of Middle Eastern people came to Latin America. The Papua New Guinea was probably Melanesian. A lot of Melanesian people sailed around the world and some of the Amerindian people in the Americas descend from them. The New World was settled by the three different groups before the Europeans arrived. Native Americans that descend from Ancient Siberian tribes that crossed the land bridge and headed South from Alaska. And then Polynesian and Melanesian sailors who settled mostly in the West Indies, and Central and South America. Samoans are a mixture of Melanesian and Polynesian lineage. Melanesian like other Austronesian groups can trace their origin back to an area of South Asia. And Polynesian trace all the way back to Ancient Taiwan. If you ever see pictures of indigenous Taiwanese people (not the mainland Chinese) you'll see a lot of Polynesian people look similar. And Latin America was intentionally Whitened. Look up Blanqueamiento in Latin America. Basically there was a campaign to get more Europeans to come to Latin America.

No disrespect but how could you believe you were 75% West African ? You are very light skinned and obviously mixed race, about the same skin color as me and I am only 21% Subsaharan African. Meli ssa plenty of Dominicans who look like that that are in there 60's. Just like some look like that who have 40 there's people in my family that's 75 and very yellow skinned. It's all on the genes you get.

WorldGamingNetwork you are right but in most cases, when you look mixed you are mixed and when you look black or white, you are mostly black or mostly white. Then, the average Dominican is less African than European for many Historical reasons. Latinos of African descent tend to identify a lot with North African Americans and the one drop rule and act surprise when they see their DNA results.

Meli ssa most Dominican don't even follow the one drop rule they identify with african Americans because they like the hip hop culture. Nothing to do with one drop rules I've never even seen a Dominican bring it up. Second that guy doesn't look mixed he just looks lighterskin. He has african features.like I said plenty of people that are 70 percent african with his skin tone especially in my family.
