The original Twister was an "event" movie like Independence Day or Cloverfield, huge hype beforehand, stuff in trailers we'd never seen (the cow flying away still lives rent free in my head thirty years later), and it lived up to the hype when it came out. Twisters, for some reason I feel like i went in with no expectations, even though I thoroughly enjoyed the first. And I ended up loving this.
@QuestionableLifeChoices25 күн бұрын
you went in with no expectations because at this point, we've seen dozens of decades-later sequels to iconic movies and they've fallen short. i think most people have learned to set expectations lower for movies like this by now. it also helps that twister was a simple movie that didn't have any grand ideas or deep themes to expand on behind it like jurassic park, terminator, or alien and so it's criteria for enjoyment is less complex; halfway decent humor, good characters, and cool tornadoes is all they needed.

17:11 the guy complaining at the hotel lobby is Bill Paxton's (main male character from Twister) son. He wanted to be in the movie to honor his dad, who passed away in 2017. Also the lady who was sitting next to Glen Powell at the rodeo is the only actor/extra that appears in both the original and this movie. Once Glen Powell found out who she was he had her move next to him in the rodeo scene.

Crystal Springs is actually my hometown of Chickasha. It was incredibly cool seeing so many places in this movie that I'm familiar with. However, I feel like the first one was really grounded in the meteorology and science. I feel like this leaned into the disaster movie trope more than the original. The VFX on the storms were incredible. But I give this one a 6. Also, if there was a chance of sever weather like that, any event like a rodeo would have been postponed. These things don't just drop out of nowhere. We typically know at least a week in advance about the risk level and zone. We actually had a few touch down just last night that caused a lot of damage only about 5 miles from my house.

Underpasses are indeed the worst places to be in a tornado for two reasons. One, it can act as a wind tunnel which increases wind speeds. Two, and more important, it's a wind trap collecting all of the garbage stuck in the tornado. Imagine being there with all that debris coming at you at speeds faster than a car. Not where you want to be.

If there are no other options you can use an overpass but it is hit and miss. Can protect you from flying objects or trap you in with them and can also suck you out, all depends on the wind and it's force and direction.

A lot of dialogue lines and plot points similar to the first movie. My favorite nods are the mentions of Muskogee Institute. Kate had Muskogee folders in her barn and a lot of the Storm Par people went there. Muskogee was the college from the first Twister that the main characters were a part of.

native Oklahoman here whose lived through 2 EF5 tornados that hit Moore Oklahoma and to answer Jens question yes, the category of the tornado is determined by the size of the tornado. there actually 2 different categories to measure tornados. First is called the Fujita scale (F1,F2,F3,F4,F5) and these tornados are really windy but dissipate quickly. Then theres the Enhanced Fujita scale (EF1, EF2, EF3, EF4, EF5) these tornados are just as windy as the original Fujita scale tornados, but these tornados are far more dangerous as they dont dissipate quickly. theyll land on the ground and destroy everything in there path and then jump around and do it again. The last EF5 that hit the USA was Moore back on May 20th 2013. it was 2.6 miles wide and lasted about 45-50 minutes and went about 14-17 miles before dissipating causing over $2 billion worth of damage. this was by far the most recent biggest tornado but by far not the deadliest. we have really good warning systems so most people were safe but other states warning systems are as good and this is why more deaths occur in other tornados outside of Oklahoma. Texas receives more tornados than we do and i think it was Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana back in 1925 that got hit the hardest ever recorded with over 695 people killed and traveled 219 miles.

In the first movie they were competing with each other but here one group was trying to work on the perimeter of the storm the other was YOLOing into the middle. Not at all working towards the same goal. I dont see any reason for a conflict to be had there.

So all the debris you see is from real disaster areas just repurposed

It would be surprising... if you thought this was better than the original 😅 My problems with / fixes for this movie... - Five years later and the lead is still crazy depressed. I get that one or two years later, but five years later, she should have moved on a bit. Though the sads can absolutely come crashing back when IN THE HEIGHTS stops by for a visit. (PS: LOVED the way Holden changed him expression for Jen's sake at 6:16) - What do EXTREME weather influencers do when there are no tornadoes? Would have made more sense for them to be a team that travels the world year-round for extreme weather events, and they come thru the midwest when tornado events are at their highest. Add a tech guy that you could BUY being part of their squad, and that's how they can make a truck that'll stick to the ground. - Pay better respect to the original. They make it seem like everything done in the original movie didn't do a damn thing to help with tornado prevention (plus the lead has some sci-fi magical solution to "cure" tornados. The ONLY reference to the original was Dorothy. Why not namecheck someone from the original as one of their professors or mentors. - IN THE HEIGHTS is a handsome feller, but when you have a love triangle between him and bad boy Glenn Powell, Powell's gonna win. If they wanted a real love triangle, should have swapped her bf with IN THE HEIGHTS. I could see that dude at Howell's rizz level. - Phillip Seymour Hoffman was a scene DEVOURER. They needed at least ONE of Powell's support crew to be more charismatic. - "I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE PEOPLE!" is a bit TOO villainy for future Superman

Helen Hunt wanted to be in the sequel. Bill Paxton and her (separately) were trying to get sequels going since the early 2000s. They changed the story to this movie and offered Hunt a cameo and she turned it down. I half expected her mom to be Helen Hunt the way they had her in the dark then turned the light on. I think it would’ve been a bit better if they would’ve had her be the daughter of Bill & Jo. 15:51 my issue though is why are they selling them where destruction just hit. They should be selling them online or any place that isn’t hit by a tornado. The people buying the shirts should just be buying the food from them. 18:32 he did tell her she could take the truck earlier. 20:08 you could do it the same way they opened the barrels.

It's a solid follow-up to the original. But man, I really wish they would have gotten Mark Mencia back to reprise that original score. Or at least had the new composer incorporate some of the old score. Even with the title and a few references/easter eggs to the original, it's hard for my brain to connect these movies at all. The music was such a big part of the original's atmosphere, no pun intended, that not having it makes this movie feel like it takes place in a completely separate universe. I realize part of the studio's goal was to not tie Twisters too much to the original, but it would've been nice to have some of the original's soundtrack back to provide a little more of a bridge from old to new. Still a good Summer blockbuster though. Definitely exceeded my expectations.

Also, idk how yall are with horror, miss Alanda is my horror queen. But the new Superman is in the prequel Pearl, opposite Mia Goth. It’s the prequel to X, that also stars Mia Goth, who’s the sole survivor of the Texas Porn Star Massacre. The sequel MaXXXINE, also stars Mia Goth and Kevin Bacon, All are directed by Tia West and specifically shot with a time period theme. Pearl is set in 1918 and follows an old school Hollywood aesthetic. X is the 1970s slasher horror grainy and almost dirty. I mean the Mcguffin for the whole trilogy is tied with the porn massacre MaXXXine is a 1980s slasher horror campy film. Personally it’s my favorite of the 3, I highly recommend - also, yes. The official rating of a tornado on the EF scale is determined by the damage it causes. It's gotten pretty controversial because technically if you had a storm with windspeeds and size that would normally be classified as an EF5, but it happens in a field and doesn't hit anything, it would not be necessarily classified as such. Calling out the rating of a tornado in the moment or before damage assessments have been done is just a guess. Don't get me wrong, I love these movies, love these storms, and love your reactions! Of course in movies they have to take a bit of license--I did not go into it expecting hyper-realism, but my gripes list as far as the science goes was not as long as I thought it would be!

This one was Twister on steroids. They paid homage to the first with the high school Dorothy duplicate to verify the class project succeeded but it had horrible consequences. The two teams were more of distraction, the real two teams were the locals banding together with science and tech to stop a tornado while the high tech outsiders looking to pay for their project with buying up the locals really never stood a chance.

You know, in a time where Hollywood and its elite seem to despise "the Heartland" and its inhabitants for political reasons, it's refreshing to see a big budget tentpole movie embracing them so thoroughly and earnestly... Which is probably why it did so well domestically.

Yeah, I thought the first one was better in general. They have better CGI now but still made the tornadoes look weirdly small sometimes. Glen whatshisname plays an oily, unlikeable character. And the story feels like a Hallmark Christmas movie. You telling me her story wasn’t engaging enough without a half-hearted, unappealing love interest? But no, they gotta cram in a smirking, run of the mill beefcake instead of writing a better script about her journey. I mean, they could have made it about her moving past her trauma and doing something to stop the rich creep who was buying up land. Much more complex and interesting. And tornadoes are rated by damage… so they had no way of knowing it was an EF5 until those assessments were made. However, I have seen storm chasers throw out guesses, so it was still realistic for them to say they thought it was an EF5. Why wouldn’t it work to dissipate a tornado? They’re a lot bigger than the funnel, the conditions that form them remains if you absorb the moisture in one, and besides, there’s unknown consequences to interrupting the course of a natural event. It could lead to catastrophic effects elsewhere. Am I an expert? No. I saw a video from an expert! And since it’s never been done, no one can know what might happen if they tried it. Most likely there would be a nasty learning curve. A single supercell can spawn multiple tornadoes and trying this fix would be incredibly dangerous anyway.

Movie was just ok for me. I do wish they would’ve had more nods to the original. I just wasn’t feeling it. I was entertained but I’d rather watch the first

I think you would be amazed how great the classic 1950's SF and horror/creature movies are. Check out The Thing, and The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951). The War of the Worlds (1953), THEM! , Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Forbidden Planet (1956), The Deadly Mantis (1957) and The Blob (1958).
