About the Metro Tunnel Project
The Metro Tunnel will create a new end-to-end rail line from Sunbury in the west to Cranbourne/Pakenham in the south east, with bigger and more modern trains, and 5 new stations. With testing now underway, the Metro Tunnel will open in 2025.

Shouldn't they use these same ones for the Suburban rail loop?

My understanding is the SRL will be smaller diameter, ~7m in diameter not the 9m of Metro, as it won't be using the same trains as the Main lines and this, theoretically, makes it cheaper. In fact the train operator and tunnel are badly named as neither are a metro while the SRL is much closer to being one.

The SRL is nowhere near being a metro. It's better to describe it as more of an express suburban rail considering how far apart the stations are.
