Oldest of 6 kids here: I don’t think my family went to restaurants until the youngest was at least 5 or 6. There was never not at least one child crying at any given time for the majority of my childhood. So. I feel ya, Link. I only have one kid myself, and the peace is palpable by comparison.

The middle of 5 and yeah true, we were never quiet but funnily enough, most of my brother's children and my son are the exact opposite, they still make noise, obviously since they're kids but compared to us they're saints. 😂

The only people upset about a restaurant charging patrons for unruly kids are the parents who know THEIR kids are the kind of kids who ruin everyone else’s experience around them. As a childFREE woman, this restaurant would immediately become a regular spot for me. Good for them. Wish more places would take on this policy.

Well, if your children are running around a restaurant, then absolutely yes, there should be a charge. That is unsafe for everyone in the restaurant, including the staff that are trying to bring out heavy trays full of food.

I was one of those nightmare crazy kids who threw food at my family at a Big Boy and my mom gave the staff a 75 dollar tip- this was over 20 years ago too. My mom came prepared to spend more because of my behaviour. That's why I agree with the surcharge because parents now feel entitled and don't even try to compensate for the insanity young children bring to a restaurant.

I have a 3 year old, I do not go to restaurants. We have been to a couple of sit down places (Olive Garden). We were with a large group of people and we had one other 2 year old with us. Our large group sat in a fairly private corner, and the restaurant was pretty empty. Our children were well behaved, and I don't think we brought the tablet. A tablet is ok if the child is behaving and the volume is off, or low enough that you can't really hear it. Otherwise, the tablet is fair to frown upon.

We were in Las Vegas at a breakfast buffet. Our friends 4 year old twin girls were running around the tables. Parents did nothing to stop them. It was just ridiculous that our friends didn't think it was bothersome to others that their girls were running up to tables and around the room. I finally told the girls to stop.

I’m with the restaurant on this. Parents nowadays go places and don’t watch their kids. You want to treat the servers like babysitters you get a babysitting fee.

Whenever we're around kids that are upset or misbehaving, we try to engage with them to try to distract them from their unhappiness. 8/10 times it works. The parents are actually grateful. Some kids just won't have it and just don't want to be happy but most of the time they want to see a happy loving attitude while the parents have checked out.

My 3 year old son started crying and I couldn’t get him to calm down so I lifted him out of the high chair and took him outside to talk. I told him he was disturbing other diners and if he couldn’t calm down we’d stay outside while my wife and daughter enjoyed their breakfast. We went back in no further fussing. On the way out my wife pointed out I was the reason for his fussing. I took food off his plate, she was right and I apologized to my three year old.

As someone who was a server and bartender on and off for many years, I surprisingly have few stories of unruly children. The only time I even remember is when there was a very large group of people I was waiting on that we’re having a celebration of some sort. There were probably six young children in the group (this was so long ago I don’t remember completely). The kids were well behaved most of the time but the group was there for probably three hours or more (as there were drinks, appetizers, main entrees, gifts being opened then dessert). The kids started getting restless toward the end. I started to kind of play with the kids and the parents were super apologetic. I personally think it’s normal for kids of that age to get restless by that point. I also wasn’t as busy by that time in their meal so I was just clearing plates and playing with the kids lol. I remember they thanked me profusely and tipped me an exorbitant amount of money. But I understand I’m lucky when it comes to this because most people have nightmare stories about misbehaving children. In my experience adults have been far more unbearable.

I'd rather see kids being kids than parents hitting, yelling or demeaning. The kids I tune out, the parents yelling ALWAYS ruins my day. Sometimes kids are out of control it's normal development.

I walk with a cane, I am usually really nervous if a family with small kids is walking past me because kids on more than one occasion have made my walking a little harder as I try and make sure my cane isn’t gonna accidentally bump into them. Good parents do take their child’s shoulder and make sure they’re not about to walk right into me, which I heavily appreciate It’s never happened yet, but kids are spatially unaware by nature so it’s not really their fault if they get in my way… But their parents should look out for their surroundings to compensate

Right? I explained this to my step sons cause we took them out to eat and they complained about it. Growing up we NEVER went out to eat, and when we did it was so special. Their mom orders in food 5-6 nights a week so they don't see getting take out as a treat. That's just expected.

Just went on a California Road Trip and was asked if we went to any wineries… I have a 1yo and a 3yo.. no. I would have loved to but honestly I dont want to ruin anyone else’s experience but also I would have been stressed out as well. I do bring my kids to restaurants but its a teaching experience. They need to learn this skill and many adults don’t know how to act in public.

Per the sports talk. I have grown up a Minnesota Vikings fan, and they always disappoint me and the fam. But I still enjoy watching them because it is a way to connect with my state and family. I also just enjoy watching sports in general. I appreciate the time and effort the athletes put into their sport!

33:00 I agree Rhett, kida are the way they're going to be. My kids are adopted, they're biological half siblings. The older is & has always been prone to being a little a-hole no matter the situation, the younger can be a surly little jerk but not nearly as bad. I try my best, but any parent who says "my kid would never!" or "I would never let my kid do that!" needs to calm down because you really don't know what kind of kid the universe is going to put with you.

Restaurants should restrict what age the patrons have to be to come in, if they care so much. If they don’t want to do that, then they should ask their customers to leave if their kids are disturbing others. A fee is ridiculous, because “bad behavior” is an opinion. If a kid is quiet and on their tablet, a fee is outrageous. For all they know, the kid is coloring on their tablet, and restaurants put coloring pages and crayons on tables for years, and some still do. Edit: to be clear, I think parents should be considerate of others when they decide to go out. I have a 5 year old, and we try to go to restaurants when it isn’t peak hours, so that she can get used to the experience, but won’t disturb others. My problem is when junk fees enter the conversation.

I worked in an Italian restaurant for about 4 years, and I would have children throw their food at me, and the parents would just watch them do it and make no effort to stop them. And this was like…probably at least once every 2 months with random kids every time 😅

I'm just wondering who is managing these behavior rules because bad behavior means different things to everyone. Public shame is a tool we need to bring back. It shouldn't have to be on the wait staff to bear the wrath of the diners when they see the charge on their bill. It should be up to the community to shame bad behavior of children and their parents so it becomes unacceptable again.

I was raised in a family of 4 (my sister, me, two step brothers) we’re all a year apart and my parents did not parent. We would often go out to restaurants but they would have us seated at a different table a distance away from them. They would choose to enjoy the night as the two of them and would make us everyone else’s problems

Parents should 100% be charged for bad behavior from their kids. They need to learn how to parent, and if they know their kids can't behave in a manor that won't disrupt the environment of the restaurant, then don't take them. The other customers shouldn't have to suffer because one group can't educate their kids.

Kids are learning and the lack of compassion for them is horrible. I’m seeing it everywhere now. I understand keeping them to their table/chairs and trying to keep them from disrupting others and staying safe in the restaurant. But Honestly if u don’t want to be bothered by a child then go to a adults only restaurant/bar or rent a car and don’t go on public planes, etc. Also who cares if a kid that’s not yours is watching a tablet. These days tablets teach reading, writing, coloring all without needing to bing a backpack full of stuff everywhere.

The lack of compassion isn't for the kids. It's for the parents who can't be bothered to actually parent. Half of the comments here are from people asking their parents/grandparents, recalling their own childhoods, or just stating their own current practice and almost every single one of them says something along the lines of "parents just didn't/don't go out with the kids until the kids are a certain age or consistently well behaved." How about having some compassion for the exhausted new parents who have listened to their screaming kid for weeks, finally got a babysitter so they could have some peaceful, enjoyable time to themselves, they go to a restaurant, and instead of enjoying some temporary peace and civility, they're listening to someone else's kid screaming and running around "because they're learning." Also, Idk where tf you live, but adults only restaurants are not common in most areas. It's not exactly a feasible alternative. Believe it or not, kids can learn at home.

Agree completely. We don't treat kids as people. We don't give them respect or responsibility and then get mad when they act badly. Kids deserve to be integrated into society not just shoved out them moment they don't act perfect. I don't eat out often but when I do I haven't really run into very poorly behaved kids, I'm not sure where all these people are getting these examples. I think some people just hate kids so much that their presence is simply enough to ruin their meal.

I have never been a sports fan . I mean I kinda like going to games but I’ll be honest that I just like watching cheerleaders, band and hearing the announcer or music. The game I have no interest. But when I comes to concert or theatre performance….it is the most amazing feeling and I enjoy every single second. I get angry when sports people complain when they would come to like school theatre event and complain after like …oh that was boring….many dad’s would act this way. It made me so mad….because they were such butt hurt that their kid was not in sports….they would complain that it was a waste of time in their or music. But those kids have a higher chance of making something with arts music and theatre than they EVER would in sports.

I'm a parent and sometimes I want to get away and relax and not have to worry about kids. As a parent and a human, if there are kids running around being a-holes, I'm worried about them hurting themselves or others. I saw a "kid just being a kid" take out a grandma with a cane once, so don't tell me it's harmless. I don't let my kids run around everywhere, they have to learn boundaries. But this sounds like one of those things you hear about in foreign countries where they charge tourists extra. Who gets the money? Seems like the staff would be watching like hawks for any excuse. If it's not automatically applied on seeing a kid come in.

Here's my thoughts on this topic: I think restaurants nationwide that serve clientele of families with children under a certain age should offer something called family hours. Just like at many public swimming pools, some offer an adult swim time for 1 hour or 30 minutes for adults only to swim and enjoy their experience: family restaurants or restaurants that serve that clientele should offer family hours. Where families can bring their children to the restaurant during certain hours of the day or on certain days of the week; where the children are allowed to be unruly and be "children" during family hours. This way kids can "be kids" and family's won't get unnecessarily charged, and adults without children can eat out at restaurants without having their eating experience ruined by children "being children". I think this concept is the best of both worlds, just saying.

Just a little feedback, or an opinion. This is what you guys are excellent at, riffing off of each other, talking about silly stuff and making it entertaining. I feel that in recent years in GMM so many gimmicks have been added and the writing is so heavy that we've lost too much of this side in the process. I appreciate the mythical crew, but it's you two who made the show what it is and in my opinion it would be amazing if you would shift a bit more this direction. Not 100%, just a noticeable shift.

Children have extremely short attention spans; If you're waiting in line for something, that's how they vanish and end up under a clothing rack or something. My parents were just lucky I was a low energy goblin and just sat down and daydreamed of being anywhere else but waiting in a line for 10 minutes.
