And we looked at her being like "girl, I know we're kind of a weird group, but we can be polite and quiet at a wedding" and she said, "you don't understand. Thank fuck I don't buy into asian cultures. You're expected to pay and everything has to be like lavish af. And of course the wedding couples expect to make back the lavish sum by means of the donations (that you're expected to pay) When I was younger I did not realize it but it dawned upon me with a horrible clang after **being forced** to attend 3 of my oldest cousins wedding dinners they call it. The wedding itself is also lavish.

Completely agree with your discussion about not being able to care about and take a stand against every social/environmental issue. A lot of people are being super vocal online about certain issues and that’s great, we need those kinds of people, but we shouldn’t think that anyone who’s not vocal about it doesn’t care. The world is a complex and deeply flawed place fraught with injustices and people consuming at the expense of the planet and its ecosystem, and I can’t solve it all, you can’t solve it all, one single person can’t solve it all. We’re just trying to make some money, feed ourselves, keep that roof over our head and find things that make us happy.

The part about not worrying and caring for everything is really important. People are calling other people out so much on the internet for not caring the one thing they care about. You only have 24 hours a day and only so much energy. I got really depressed when I became an adult and tried to care about everything. But then one day I understood that it’s better to care and be active for one topic while other people fight for another topic and that’s great! It’s better to focus on one problem and become a „specialist“ in this kind of field than waste your energy everywhere.
@theodorejenkins60663 жыл бұрын
Kind of like how they are specialists in anime but they haven't talked about anime in so long now. I miss it.
@utuberaptor3 жыл бұрын
Very true. There's simply not enough time in adulthood to work to survive and ALSO care about every single thing in the world. Like you said, it's best to find one or two things you're passionate about and focus on that. I think being "evil" gets a bad rap, it's really just selfishness, and that includes self-care. You gotta find a balance in your life between doing altruistic things and doing selfish things. If you only do the former, you'll burn out and won't be able to continue to help others, and if you all do the latter, it makes the rest of the world shit which directly effects your own life and your ability to keep making yourself happy.

"Bride price" customs in many cultures often date back to the days when most of the population were farmers, and originally were compensation to the wife's family for all the household labor (sewing, cooking, and some farm work as well) she wouldn't be helping them with anymore. It didn't start as the husaband literally buying his wife.

@donpax89593 жыл бұрын
@@ssdazed6229 interesting, but how exactly the money can protect a wife from being abused? Edit: thanks to the discussion below and especially one person I understand now how bride price can protect the wife. So, if the husband abuses her, she gets divorced, and her family doesn't give the money back to the husband's family. So the husband better not to abuse his wife, because his family will lose the money then. Though it's kind of fucked up, what's the point of the marriage if it's so money-dependent?
@abhisheksamuel59863 жыл бұрын

In the Netherlands, we also had this fugitive show called 'hunted', although being paired was not mandatory. The winner of the 1st season was this former marine instructor who BMed the hunters so badly. So his first tactic was to camp in the forests near airports, because the police is not allowed to fly with helicopters with heat cameras near that airspace. eventually he got bored with hiding in the middle of nowhere, so he started pranking the hunters. For example, he would give the neighbor's kid of his current hide-out money to buy a brand new phone, then prepare an escape car. He would then wait at the local mailbox until the postal service van showed up, then call the office of the hunters to taunt them. They would immediately trace and localize the phone. Then the marine would put the phone in an envelope addressed to the hunter's office and give it to the mail man and resume to escape in the opposite direction, while the hunters were unknowingly chasing a postal service van. His best prank was how he won the contest. You see, the producers of the show would give the fugitives these cryptic coordinates, which would be their escape routes towards freedom after 14 days. The hunters had to catch the fugitives and decode this message. In the end, they figured out that it was going to be at the helicopter platform of some hotel. The marine also knew this and he also knew that this helicopter had to come from somewhere. So he called his friend who worked at the nearest airport and he was like: 'This Saturday, do you by chance have a helicopter flight scheduled towards this hotel? I need to hitch a ride.' So there he was, dressed up as a pilot in the helicopter, surrounded by the entire hunter team without them realizing and he managed to get away with it.

I think being able to empathize is really important. As a Poli Sci major at Uni, one of the worst things is being told you don't [blank] enough or you are not [blank] enough because it ignores the person's perspective and their situation. Take time to care, but we all have things that we care more about and that's the reality of it. It's not like it isn't important, but we all have things we care about and our energy can be better spent narrowing our energy rather than spreading ourselves too thin

Joey is talking about "Brautraub in Kirgisistan", I don't know the English title, but this shit was crazy. The guy loaded all his brothers, cousins and friends into a van, drove up to the water hole, talked to a friend of his future bride and when she showed up, the guys just dragged her into the van and drove off to the wedding. It was an older custom that they reclaimed in Kirgistan, when I remember correctly. Although it was actually illegal at this point in time, the law inforcement just never did anything about the kidnapped brides. The bride who was kidnapped at the water hole just was fed candys until she stopped crying. It was absurd to watch.

Being a Thai I can elaborate a bit about the "tribute" to the bride's family. Back in the day it is customary that the bride will have to live with the gloom family. Then that would left the bride parents without anyone to work and support the old people. So it was more like a showing of support financially to the bride's family. But nowadays, people rarely do it or they just give the money then the bride's family give them back to the marry couple for a starting funds.

Family tithes/dowry’s were common all throughout history when marrying someones daughter, generally it comes from the idea that you’re binding two families together or that you’re giving up a family member (a daughter) to another family.
