“Our Vision for Liberation.” A talk with Ilan Pappé and Ramzy Baroud.

To mark the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, Casa Árabe and the UNESCO Chair on Conflict Resolution at the University of Cordoba have organized this talk with Ilan Pappé and Ramzy Baroud, co-editors of the book "Our Vision for Liberation: Engaged Palestinian Leaders & Intellectuals Speak Out".
“Liberation” is a term that was dropped from the official Palestinian lexicon simply because it was incompatible with the political discourse advocated by Washington, but it has resurfaced in the recent work co-edited by Ilan Pappé and Ramzy Baroud, because without including justice-based dimensions, there can be no peace. Now that the international community is witnessing the failure of the Oslo Accords, along with the “two-state solution” model, the paradigmatic vacuum has opened up space for the articulation of new possibilities.
This reality has also created the opportunity to introduce a new Palestinian discourse capable of addressing the current challenges and obstacles to Palestinian rights and freedom, while proposing various paths for moving forward. The book co-edited by Baroud and Pappé includes personal experiences of educators, community leaders, spiritual leaders, artists, historians, human rights activists and political prisoners.
At this meeting organized by Casa Árabe and the UNESCO Chair on Conflict Resolution at the University of Cordoba, Pappé and Baroud will be analyzing several layers within the current Palestinian discourse that have led to the current impasse: the pro-Israel American political discourse, the Israeli colonial discourse, the Arab discourse of supposed normalization and the obsolete discourse of the Palestinian factions. Presented by Manuel Torres, Director of the Unesco Chair on Conflict Resolution at the University of Cordoba. The event will be moderated by Karim Hauser, Casa Árabe’s International Relations Coordinator.
Ramzy Baroud is an American-Palestinian journalist, media consultant, author, internationally syndicated columnist, publisher of "The Palestine Chronicle", former managing editor of "Middle East Eye" headquartered in London, former editor-in-chief of "The Brunei Times" and a former assistant editorial director at Al Jazeera Online. Baroud also served as head of Research and Studies at Aljazeera.net English. He has authored six books and contributed to many others; his latest volume, co-edited with Ilan Pappé, is "Our Vision for Liberation: Engaged Palestina Leaders and Intellectuals Speak Out". His books have been translated into many languages, including French, Turkish, Arabic and Korean. Baroud holds a PhD in Palestine Studies from the University of Exeter (2015).
Ilan Pappé is a professor of History and the director of the European Center for Palestine Studies and a professor at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom. He founded and directed the Academic Institute for Peace in Givat Haviva, Israel, from 1992 to 2000 and was president of the Emil Tuma Institute for Palestine Studies in Haifa from 2000 to 2006. Pappé was also a senior lecturer with the Department of Middle Eastern History and the Department of Political Science at the University of Haifa from 1984 to 2006. He has authored books which include "Ethnic Cleansing in Palestine" (2006), "The Modern Middle East" (2005), "A History of Modern Palestine: One land, two peoples" (2003) and "Great Britain and the Arab-Israeli Conflict" (1988). He received his B.A. from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1979 and his Ph.D. in Philosophy from Oxford University in 1984.

I have decided from now on to reject the two-state solution and to defend the one-state solution. This, which will be called Palestine, Israel or even Israel-Palestine if you like, must be a constitutional, secular and democratic state that does not discriminate against anyone regardless of their ethnicity, ideology, religion, gender or sexual orientation. Therefore I am as opposed to the approach of Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad to create an "Islamic State" throughout the territory as the "Greater Israel" project led by Likud, Shas and the Religious Zionist Party. That is the path of liberation that seems to me the most pragmatic and plausible. Thanks.

They are adept at staging and distorting incidents." Israel faces a challenge that we UK do not. It is the automatic, Pavlovian presumption by international media, & human rights groups, that Israel in wrong, while abusing human rights. Israel took extraordinary measures to give Gazans notice of targeted areas, dropping over 2 million leaflets, and making over 100,000 phone calls. Many missions that could have taken out Hamas military capability were aborted to prevent civilian casualties. Israel allowed huge amounts of humanitarian aid to Gaza. To deliver aid virtually into your enemy's hands is, to the military tactician -unthinkable. But Israel took those risks.
Despite all, innocent civilians were killed. War is chaos & full of mistakes. Countless mistakes by UK. US & others in Afghanistan & Iraq. Human errors. Mistakes are not war crimes. Civilian casualties -consequence of HAMAS DELIBERATELY SACRIFICING PALESTINIANS.
