A tour around Bodiam Castle in East Sussex. This beautiful moated castle is part of our Historic England series of videos. 🔗 • Historic England
Our tour starts with a quick glimpse of the team room & shop at the entrance to Bodiam Castle, before a walk over the grounds, past the World War Two Pillbox to the beautiful 14th-century castle surrounded by its very own moat.
We walk around the castle to the wooden walkway leading to the massive stone gatehouse with its ancient wooden portcullis. Once inside we discover the ruins of the castle and explore its layout. This includes the huge kitchens and a mysterious waterhole.
We then climb the Postern Tower to enjoy views oner the East Sussex countryside and admire the interior of the castle.
Leaving the castle, we wander under the murder holes and back cross the moat. We complete a lap of Bodiam Castle and take in the views from all angles. We take a quick look at that World War Two Pillbox in the castle grounds.
We complete the tour of Bodiam by taking a stroll down to Bodiam Station and the East Sussex terminus of the Kent & East Sussex Railway heritage line.
Thanks so much for watching, and we'd love to hear from you so please leave a comment and don't forget to subscribe so you don't miss any of our travels: 🟢-

Hi Shane, I had to look up 'The Men of Sherwood Forest', I bet Bodiam didn't look much different, not sure it's changed in a few years. Thanks for stopping by to take a look, Gary & Janis

Rob, That sounds a great book - There used to be game I played on the PC, Railroad Tycoon, that allowed you to run a simulated railway through different periods of time. Great fun, and I think you can still get it on Steam these days. Gary (& Janis)

I hear the Sussex people pronunce Bodiam as Bod-jam. Thanks for the visit.
@OurWorldForYou
@OurWorldForYou Жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, I think you're correct, at speed, it is pronounced as Bod-jam. The strange thing is, we spoke to a few of the English Heritage guides, and I know we got three different pronunciations; okay, the last guide was an American now living in the UK. The worse thing was I was trying to avoid pronouncing it as 'Bodum', the Danish maker of their French Presses. Also, writing the subtitles, how many times did I spell it as Bodium? Oh joy. Thanks again for the comment, glad you're enjoying the videos Gary & Janis

Thank you my friends, for this much anticipated tour of Bodium Castle, surely one of the most evocative, and beautiful Medieval ruins in Kent.We are fortunate to see it, free from all the brambles and wild growth that covered it until fairly recent times, so that, as you say ( and show ) it is simply magnificent from multiple viewpoints :) Bodium does not have the history of such castles as Dover or Rochester, but visually, it is, without doubt, a stunner ! Many thanks, as always :)

Sir, you're testing me surely 🧐 Bodiam is in East Sussex, we don't want to be responsible for the great county wars of 2021 do we? 🤣 It is interesting how the Castle of the southeast vary though, and the purposes change from the Norman examples of Rochester & Dover, to the likes of Bodium, becoming more luxurious but still built for a defensive propose, and then the likes of Hever Castle, which was really just a fancy manor house (still very beautiful though). Thanks for the comment, hope all is well in NZ Take care, Gary

@@OurWorldForYou Oh damn, your right of course, and I should know better, but I do forget, from time to time where the county boundary lines are. I fall on my sword in shame :( As for NZ, Covid Delta has had us in various levels of lockdown for quite some time now, so things could be better - thank you for asking :)

No need to worry, you don't know how many times I nearly said Kent in the commentary 😆 As for covid, I just hope we do get a proper grip on it because lockdowns affect so many people in so many ways - Our message is still the same - Stay safe, stay well.

@@OurWorldForYou Thank you Gary, you are a gentleman, and quite forgiving ! Bodium Castle must be one of the most elegant of castle ruins - I seem to recall it was used for the opening and closing sequences for the documentary series on the Thirty Years War " Chivalry and Betrayal " a few years ago now. As always, I thoroughly enjoy your tours around KENT and elsewhere ha :)

Lord Curzon is the main reason the castle was rebuilt after it was disassembled... I thought Lord Curzon donated the castle and property to England. No mention of him is not good.

Hi John, Thanks for taking the time to watch the video, Lord Curzon was mentioned at 03:05, and I stated he bequeathed it to the National Trust in 1926. From the research I did before the video, I noticed several individuals 'repaired' it in various degrees, Lord Curzon is probably the most notable. Thanks again, Gary & Janis

The Railway Children 1970. Hope Mother doesn't get too wet. We don't want her ill again. Its like being in a sieged castle. The arrows & the bows striking agenist the battlements. Its more like a great big garden squirt. You're a great big garden squirt. Thank you. Stop it you two. There's a train coming. Oakworth Station.

Rob, that's correct; the English Civil War had two distinct sides, winners and losers, and not always on the battlefields - some families became very wealthy & powerful supporting the 'right' side. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment, Gary & Janis
