Tap o’ Noth Permaculture - a Food Forest Farm

Tap o’ Noth Permaculture - a Food Forest Farm

Күн бұрын

In this week's FARMVLOG, while James is doing his morning chores (feeding the goats and sheep), we catch up on how the farm is doing after storm Arwen hit the UK, why Jed, the Shetland tup, is no longer on the farm (!) and why next spring is going to be very busy for Rosa and James. We also look at how the ditches and ponds are handling the large volume of snow melt and rain water that the farm has at this time of year before starting work on a very simple log bridge. The farm has a lot of drainage ditches and water/irrigation channels that we have to build bridges across to be able to move animals and get machinery across the ditches. We've been building simple farm bridges for several years using forestry timber covered in chicken wire to provide grip. We talk about why we use logs rather than pallets to build the bridges and how useful forestry tongs are to move heavy logs.
Chapters:
0.00 - morning chores
2.27 - storm Arwen update
3:40 - sheep update - where's Jed?
5:07 - We're having a baby, thanks for the well wishes!
6:11 - the farms waterways
8:21 - our firewood/timber pile
9:52 - starting to move logs
12:29 - forestry tongs
13:35 - starting to build the bridge
21:07 - the finished bridge
About Tap o' Noth Farm:
Hi, we're James and Rosa! Welcome to Tap o' Noth Farm, a quarter acre Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) market garden and 8 acre permaculture designed forest garden farm/homestead in Aberdeenshire, NE Scotland. We practice home scale to small farm scale agroforestry and regenerative agriculture methods to produce organic fruit and vegetables, raise dairy goats for all our raw milk needs, Shetland sheep and geese to graze our silvopasture and coppice systems and laying hens, moved around in a Chickshaw, for an abundance of eggs.
Our videos aren't 'how to's' - more videos to give a glimpse into our lifestyle and hopefully inspire you to bring aspects of what you see into your own life.

If you're looking for even more content from James and Rosa then you can become a patron of Tap Farm. It takes James between 5-10 hrs to edit our vlogs, let alone the time it takes to film and farm at the same time! Your support will aid us greatly in producing our FARMVLOGS, enabling us to take the time needed to craft a beautiful film and to help fund the licences needed for the vlog soundtrack. We will list your name at the end of each vlog episode so everyone knows how brilliant you are! We will also keep you updated on our farm work/life by posting exclusive video content that is not available on KZbin such as FARMVLOG outtakes, behind the scenes footage, hints & tips and more in depth videos discussing the many permaculture systems to be found on the farm PLUS the odd photo from Rosa and James.

Hi, another interesting video, those grabbers certainly look like they are a great help. The storm coming through must have been a bit nerve racking, it was bad enough down here in Devon, but luckily nothing drastic happened. Hope you had a wonderful Christmas and all good wishes for the coming year......going to be busy, but then that’s what it’s all about....can’t wait to share. Thanks so much.

Hey Y'all, Congratulations I hope you have a fantastic journey on to the arrival of the next family members. Blessings and prayers for health and happiness. How do you know if a sheep is in lamb are there certain physical signs? Watching the bridge build was so much fun. The natural rustic nature of the bride blends in so nice. The engineering of the water to maximize the benefit of keeping the water to stay longer is very beneficial. I really think the two of you are quite lovely folks living in and with nature on your farmstead. You have a wonderful spirit and are very inspirational. Thank you so much for this episode and all the videos you make. What you are doing does make a difference and I am quite impressed. Take care bye for now

Hi Mr. Steve! Thank you so much for the prayers and for the kind words and thanks, much appreciated. I think, unless you have a vet check on your flock, the only way to know is that they will start producing colostrum and their teats firm up a few weeks before they lamb. So we just have to wait and see really.

You guys are adorable! Congratulations. I like the concept of using what is available on the farm first but I would probably have either stripped the bark or burned it off first. Prolong the logs as much as possible.

The BBC has a good series of historical shows that feature Ruth Goodman (historian), Alex and Peter (archeologist). They showed making a mixture of red ochre and lanolin to spread on the chest of the ram so shows on the rump of ewes to id the ones he had mounted. I think its in the victorian farm series. Not knowing the species of trees that grow in Scotland, here there is, in order of rot resistence - chestnut, locust, red oaks. With the bark removed, fire charred, and coats in pine resin, any of those species would your child's lifetime. Timber-lot planted at 4000 seedlings per acre for future use? Planting them that densely will encourage them to grow tall and straight.

Great stuff as usual! It would be (that's one of those fan's wishes) really great to see your agroforestry set up in detail. I mean the trees in your forest garden, plus the ones in the hedge-row-style rows in the market garden. Nerdish stuff like what's in the guilds, how you train/prune trees (if you go the French or the English way) etc. This might be my shot at a letter for Santa!

Hey there guys--The calm after the storm-Congratulations for the future and Best Wishes for Christmas-a long and Happy New Year also. Natures way of backing up water--Beavers. But would they go with all the trees you have planted--I doubt it!! Looking forward to seeing how the swales in the new forest nursery work. Hoping Mother Nature doesn't unleash her anger in the new year--The N.E. of Scotland has had a rough time recently with weather.
