I have personally purchased Polar H10 chest strap thanks to him as well. I use it while exercising on my Samsung Health. Unfortunately, Samsung Health as an app is underdeveloped for its accuracy. For example, swimming is based solely on the time spent swimming with zero regard to pool length, lap completed, or even heart rate (to measure intensity). But that's an app problem, not the device. I'd say I wish Quantified Scientist would also start reviewing major health apps to see if they properly use metrics they already have.

i like the concept of aura ring, something so minimal that you could forget you have it on, doesn't even have a screen. But apparently the technology isn't there yet to make it a ring, performance aside, it's too bulky to be a ring. They should make a bracelet, that I would be interested in. And then I could wear a traditional watch, which looks a lot better than smartwatches.

I know you focus more on exercise, but would you ever consider making a video about suitable trackers for people suffering from PEM, e.g. due to Post-Covid or ME/CFS? The number of affected people is growing and while tracking your heart rate is recommended it is difficult to find accurate information. You're the one I'd trust the most to make a well-researched video about that :)

I use the Oura 3 for sleep tracking and readiness score. I use chest strap and a Garmin watch for HR. The Oura is unusable for exercise HR. But it's quite good for HRV tracking during the day and night. For sleep tracking, the new algorithm has been a lot better subjectively, and it also seems to get better over time. I continue to hate the subscription model. But when my first ring 3 died, I got a replacement in record time, no questions asked.

I have been using separate apps, and only compared the metrics (in time). Not by downloading and analyzing the raw data. It's not a scientific method, just a consumer level comparison. :)

Hi Rob, thanks for a new video. I'm currently also looking at oura 3 new sleep staging algo an for me it seems to do a little better than before, consistent with your results. I have few questions about your QS project related to exercising and i hope you will answer them in some way. Since you are doing a lot of cycling/running exercise, i wonder what did you extract and track from this data. I see a big field there for track internal/external variables and see how body respond to training and make data-driven daily decisions (like do training today or not, and if do - what intensity etc). For now i'm recording HR / HRV for each exercise and some exercise specific data: stryd power and speed for running, garmin rally cadence/speed/power data for cycling, sets*reps*weight for strength training. From these data some indexes may be calculated, like mechanical job in kJ as a measure of external load and some HR derived indexes like TRIMP to measure internal load. Also some rates (like power to hr) can be used to assess current cardiorespiratory fitness and monitor it over time. HRV derived from standardized cycle ramp (like +20W every 3 mins) may be used to estimate VT1 / VT2 and monitor them over time. 3-5 time-to-exaustion trials (TTE) may be used to build Critical Power (CP) model to decribe which power can be sustained for log period of time and how much of anaerobic capacity one have over that power. There are also other models and tools (like SmO2, LT fingerpricking, monitoring cardiac drift at VT1 etc) for monitoring / modelling physical state based on training data. Also i'm intrested in what main devices you using to track these metrics. They might include watches, power meters, chest straps etc. It would be cool if you make a specific video about which devices are best to monitor and track exercise in QS style :) I think, right now a lot of people interested on how to exercise and data-driven decisions from accurate device/app framework might provide useful utility for daily decisions. Hi Max! Thanks for your detailed question and for all the information you provide :-). Honestly, I think you probably have more information on this specific subject than I do. For my indoor cycling workouts I usually do the same program, cycling at a little over 270 Watt or ~30 mins. One rough estimate I've found to be indicative of my cycling performance is how many short breaks I feel I need to take during the workout, but this is of course very specific to my situation. However, what you are asking for is something more general, quantitative and systematic, and I must admit I do not have an answer for you there. I mostly monitor my trends over time of RHR and HRV during the night to assess wether my fitness is increasing (though this is also far from perfect). I wish I had a better answer, but I am not familiar enough with the literature to make any more statements. Have a great day!

Rob, another well done, comprehensive test. Thanks! The Dreem 2, no longer sold to the public, in-depth test is over two and a half years old. Has its firmware been updated? At that time it was 83.9% accurate while the matrix varied by 9.73% to 47.1% vs that pro EEG. At best acceptable, those values have been overall benchmarked against sleep algorithms across the cost spectrum, including this yet another Oura test, for a BETA. Given that there is more to sleep than light, deep and REM, it's apparent that even the Apple and FitBit devices are SLEEP curiosities. Fitness bands/watches have great value as do your tests of heart rates, SpO2, etc. IMHO, we can do without another Oura test until a final v4 is released. Your talent is needed on other devices! BTW, you should HOST A FORUM. Some can be monetized. It's tedious to ferret out here the attempts at discussions scattered in the fog of all the deserved kudos.

I don't understand why there aren't more screenless trackers - I wish the Jawbone Up bracelet was still around or the FitBit Flex 2 (the current one looks disgusting) - I wear mechanical watches and don't want to wear them next to a digital screen, but the Up bracelet was a good compromise. I'm not going to wear a ring but I would welcome a bracelet variant of the Oura Ring, it could be a module within interchangeable bracelets.

I'm interested in tracking my sleep stages. I have an Apple Watch/iPhone, but I've not been able to get it to track sleep stages, which is apparently not that uncommon of a problem. I've tried various solutions to this problem to no avail. Very frustrating. Thanks for this video, I've noticed the time it takes for me to fall asleep seems much more accurate with the new beta , and I wore the gen 2 on my right hand ring finger and the gen 3 on my left hand index finger, and every night for 7 days, the gen 2 showed a higher value for sleeping HRV.

Love your channel and subscribed. I have a quick questiion i hope u can answer. I am running a functional medicine clinic and used a firstbeat device and polar h10 which is great but my patient find the devices awkward to wear for 24 or 48 hr assessments for stress, sleep and recovery. The whoop device is a bit expensive and doesnt allow multiple users. I am thinking a watch is a good introduction for them. I am looking for a contineous hrv watch with a comprehensive wellness report. Which one wouldnu recommend. I am thinking a fitbit but i would appreciate your advice. A fitbit allows multiple accounts i believe. Thank you so much in advance.

Oh my god. Let me just begin by saying I subscribed and liked before the video was even two seconds in after I saw the preview of all the graphs you had. Seriously. The set of KZbinrs who do data analysis to this extent let alone at all, especially the subset of those who are product reviewers, I thought was actually n = 0. But now I know n >= 1. Next, I know this is an old video, but I had some questions and a possible request if you happen to read this! I was wondering if you could either provide your raw data somewhere (if you are too busy), or run a quick analysis for me. Let me preface with a rationale: I feel like a lot of these devices advertising the optimal wake up aka “smart alarm” feature by waking you up when you are in light sleep, and as such, I feel like minimal time difference error for change in sleep stage between EEG vs. device is almost more important than raw percentages, since the basis of being woken up is ensuring you’re actually not in deep sleep anymore, and necessarily not the overall percentage accuracy. (Though it’s undoubtedly important too, and you can infer a lot from it.) From my estimation here it looks like around a quarter of one grid length or about 30/4 = 7.5 mins, which isn’t that bad, but it’s hard to evaluate from this scale. But if that’s the difference between deep sleep and light sleep, and it’s 8 plus minus however many minutes too early, I wonder by how much that would cause a less efficient awakening since you’d still be in deep sleep. The other variable I was interested in was minimum number of “hallucinations” (defined as an incorrect change in reported sleep stage), since this would protect against what I fear as well, as opposed to just raw %. It’s interesting that your EEG data showed only one deep sleep instance on the second sample, so I’m now even questioning EEG’s accuracy here. Also I’m assuming “light sleep” is lumped stage 1 and 2, correct? I wonder if it’s just not set to detect stage 3 properly (either poor physical electrode attachment or software settings maybe(?)). I feel like ascertaining these two variables would would be pretty easy from your data programmatically, and if it’s not too much to ask, I’d especially like to see a similar correlational graph like the one you showed for all the different devices but with these two variables if you’re game for either sharing the data or running it. I feel like we can further get some valuable insights from this. Please let me know either way, and thank you again!

There are two explanations of awake - 1. When we change sides 2. When we get up in the middle of night for whatever reason. So how do you explain awake in your videos!! Would be thankful ....

I would say even if you have and EEG device with all data presented in simple format, its not an easy task to derive any actionable daily decisions based on these data. Most of healthy sleep interventions works without any sleep stages feedback (go to bed at same time each day, sleep in quiet and cold environment, have a sunlight early morning, and avoid caffeine intake after midday, avoid eating and exercise 2-3 hours prior bed). Another issue is a feedback loop, if someone have a low deep sleep at night he may consider to avoid exercising this day, because of maybe not recovered enough. But low deep sleep may because of low activity on a previous day and better decision is to exercise at this day, to stimulate body to produce more deep sleep. So it's not that simple as it seems :)

@@quantifiedmax Low deep sleep is not an indication to take it easy the next day but a low HRV might be in combination with not enough or restless sleep. If your REM sleep is consistently dropping over time, this could be an indication of some underlaying health problem, etc. The Oura app does a great job to give some actionable advice.

@@DigiDriftZone HRV is useful, but oura averaged nightly values seems to be not too sensitive for daily stressors. In my case i see significant nightly HRV changes pretty rare, mostly when i get sick. Even hard training most of time doesnt affect my HRV. Another case is a morning standing HRV which is pretty sensitive to daily changes. REM dropping overtime doesnt meanigful without context. Dropping every year for a bit? Thats aging. Have low base values? That's another issue. Dropping for 2 days and then comeback to normal values (1.5h+) - nothing to do here, its fine? Anyway oura cant detect REM sleep with enough accuracy and can't give actionable advices on something it cant measure. Ring trying to predict REM sleep based on HR/HRV/accelerometer data and some modelling (circadian rhythm etc), its not really measuring REM, because REM described as combination of EEG and EMG signals, something that ring doesnt measure. So i dont see how oura can give advices here, even nightly HRV advices doesnt seems to be useful without context.

Tbh for the price and subscription model of the Oura Ring, there is no way I would buy it. Specially because I have an Apple watch, that's better in all aspects.

I've had multiple Oura Rings fail from battery issues. Both for second and third gen. Only the first gen ring has shown any level of quality and lifespan. I just had a replacement under warranty but am now outside of warranty and waiting for this one to die too. I really would strongly suggest avoiding Oura. Very cool device and I have enjoyed every generation of it that has been released but if this most recent replacement dies on me I am done with them. The quality control issues are just too much and they are getting more dodgy about replacements under warranty.

I'm looking forward to the new Circular smart ring and the Ring conn device. Both have live on the fly HR telemetry for instance viewing on a smartphone (The oura is retrospective a huge negative). These are Zero subscription alternatives to the rip off Oura ring.

Thank you for bringing out the tests with the new firmware update from oura. Apparently the Apple Watch remains one of the best choices and a real versatile device. Are you aware of any good app for sleep tracking that takes advantage of the fantastic Apples sleep tracking algorithm?
