Yes sometimes it makes me angry to see Singaporean Chinese discriminating those from China. I faced so much discrimination living in Europe for a while because of my skin colour. No one cares if I was from Singapore or China. I look like Chinese and that’s it. I am discriminated. Can really relate. My parents came from China to Singapore for work purposes and took on PR. I was born here and stayed a PR until primary 3 I took on Singapore citizenship. At age 21 I revoked my Chinese citizenship. I faced the most discrimination in my neighbourhood primary school where girls loudly whispered about how I sound different and my form teacher shamed me in front of the class for nothing. I hated parent teacher meetings because other kids will trail behind my dad, pointing fingers and giggling about how different he is. They punned on my name and said I'm sb that is not wanted. I used to feel extremely inferior of being China Chinese and felt angry towards my parents - why weren't they the normal regular Singaporean Chinese parents like the other kids' parents? I went as far as being overly defensive and denying my ties with China for many many years. This fear of being discriminated continues into my higher education, but soon I realize that it seems to only occur in a particular social circle where people are more ignorant. I grew to be more comfortable with my other "nationality", and eventually proud of it (like how the guy at the end puts it, if you can't change it why not be proud of it).

I came to SG as a student and now a citizen. I didn’t think twice when I convert my citizenship as I felt more at home in SG than in Myanmar. I did joined Myanmar students activities while I was a student but I felt uncomfortable and out of place during the activities. I felt more comfortable to join local CCA activities and felt like I belonged more in them just like my local friends. And also I love NS, it’s part of affirmation that I truly belonged to SG.

I was born in Chile and came to Spain when I was 10. Then at 17 I had to go back and I didn't feel I belonged there anymore. Now I'm back at Spain, the country I consider as "home", but sadly being an immigrant doesn't give you the right to say it openly. In a few years I can ask for the Spanish nationality and then I will have both. The sad part comes when someone asks me where I am from because I can just answer where I was born. Coming from a similar background as most of them, my family moved here to Singapore only just after a few months after I was born in the same SEA country as two of the lovely people in the video (they're all lovely!) , raised in Singapore context, going through the education system, national service, naturalizing as a citizen etc. But it often feels as if we are still not really accepted, having once being told ''Singapore only has Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian, your people can't be true Singaporean'' when we claim to identify as a Singaporean. Despite going through the efforts of trying harder to assimilate, even took Chinese as a mother tongue since primary school and speaking it with peers and colleagues on a near daily basis , the general feeling most of us get is that we're outsiders to both Singapore and the country of birth. We relate more to the average Singaporean than to the 'newcomers' despite being of the same race, who unfortunately calls us out for betrayal. Really enlightening to see the opinions of those that have similar experiences..

I relate lol. That feeling of not belonging anywhere is real. My parents suddenly decided to move from China here and I have really no preparation for what Singapore is like. Growing up I always felt the need to "fake it till you make it" cuz I didn't really understand why I felt different and couldn't relate. I was always putting up a front and pretending to know what people were talking about and trying to be like them until years later when I realised I've kinda lost my original identity. After trying so hard to assimilate I suppose I'm no longer Chinese enough to really blend in in China but at the same time not really Singaporean Singaporean. And because I'm south Chinese, I don't speak Chinese with a stereotypical "China accent" and I get the "you're not really China" comment a lot lol. Even within China I don't really fit anywhere because my parents are from different parts of China so I didn't really have a "hometown" and didn't have the opportunity to be really exposed to any of their cultures.

yilyees thats depends on when he renounce his citizenship. If he renounce his korea citizen when he is much younger (not at the legal age of to do NS) then obviously he doesn’t have to serve KR NS but to serve SG NS when the time comes. I have korean friend who did not renounce his citizen, he had to go back to serve his NS. With thats being said, it really depends on when he gotten his citizenship or when he renounce.

If countries are doing a speech how you need to serve your country, they should then go to the end of it and consider if you served in another army, then you should not serve in another. It just prove that these countries are looking for cannon fodder... So it means your friend has to waste 4 years of it's youth ? Starting studies at best at 22 years old in top of that ?

Elfelegendaire i didn’t say that my friend did 2 national service. I said, he did his KR NS. And also said that it depends on when the person renounce his citizenship and thats would determine whether is he going to serve in with KR or SG NS.

@@knightshade909 I think we were 2 people having misunderstood. Thanks for clarifying. Still sad yo see you have to serve twice to keep them both, or simply if you were too late in paperwork. I know some countries have some kind of agreement to avoid this. Not all apparently.

The thing with presumptions about people from China consuming exotic or wild game is because there are still practices, maybe not amongst the younger generation, but with people age 40+ there's still traces left. Like in North Eastern China (东北), selling dog meat and wild game is still common. I was looking up my friend's address and found several dog meat shops nearby so I asked her and she said her dad and older relatives still occassionally consume dog meat and it's not uncommon per se over there.

By far the best vid from OGS. Really love to see how integrated these migrants are with the our Singaporean culture esp the younger ones who grew up here. None of us chose the colour of our skin, our nationality and the country where we or our parents were born in. I honestly feel that most prejudices from the locals comes from migrants who don't want to integrate with our local society and think they're exclusive, which i believe is a small minority from the thousands of migrants who have called Singapore their home. I think it has improved. I came Singapore since sec 1 in 2016 and I am in JC now. Generally, students actually find it rather interesting that I come from Vietnam rather than making fun of me and stuffs. When I went for part time job, people didn’t have any bad attitude towards me, they are only surprised that I can’t speak Chinese. I think that should be the way to go because people are being so much better compared to what they told in this video.

It's not the pioneer days where it results in the Chinese outnumbering Malays in Singapore, or Caucasians outnumbering aboriginals in the Americas and Oceania, or Indians outnumbering aboriginals in the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean islands.

Just came across this channel. Working from home nowadays, still. I have colleagues from many countries. 🤔 The company I am with is like the UN. I am 73 and I had know many Thai & Myanmar working in Singapore in my early years. To me they are like brothers to me then. The Myanmar nationalist ‘renting’ at my place now are like my daughter & sons. I take care of them & vice versa. Sponsoring a Thai village boy in his U-education in BK now. I speak fluent Thai, read & write a little. Still trying to learnt Myanmar at my age. I don’t differentiate people because of their skin colour, religion or their Nationality. ‘We are the world’ so to speak. 🌱 p.s. Nice to have all these youngsters becoming Singapore Citizen. Cute comments. Have a good futures ahead.🙏

Take sg citizenship without a backup aka not able to become citizens of birth country once drop, is ok. I welcome you. But if you become citizen, being able to go back whenever you want, is just gaming the system. For Malaysian, the husband remain Malaysian, while wife become singaporean, to get Singapore benefits while able to buy cheap car and house back in Malaysia.
