Saying that with a smile, And he left home 4ish AM. He's @ 60 with that flat belly, make me, a younger lad, feel ashamed. Many Asian friends of mine & myself got thru universities thanks to parents like Uncle Ah Hua who has no time to spend his honest money for himself. Let say 5 to 9 & 7 days a wk. keep working & smiling in a nation 1.4 bil ppl. This makes China great & greater &, perhaps, the greatest is quite a reasonable conclusion.

@@arifaiman95 Thanks. Duno. How much are the differences, if any. Singapore had no sufficient natural fresh water. No primary commodity i.e mining. The land is tiny for agriculture, 6.5 million is tiny to achieve economy of scale to compete with over populated neighbours. With all the text booked disadvantages, where is its prosperity derived from if not its hard working & intelligent ppl. This Chinese uncle is 1 of those. I mean Chinese ethos.

Sometimes in a family if only one person to run the business and the others dont get involved or help out, things very hard to work out. Running any business will require management from inside combined with outside. If one person how to divide hands to two part of managing business. You'll always trust own closest family members more than outsiders first. Not everything can depends on workers. I used to run a small business by my own. My only family is my mother, but unfortunately she not a good reader & in math. There're many things i need to run by my own while inside the work cannot finish. I felt so helpless & tired & felt like wasting time. Eventually i closed down business & went for employment. So when this uncle said he's very tired & was thinking to close it down, i totally can understand his feeling. What he said tired, was not about physically only, but mentally also. Lucky his daughter has interest to make it a heritage, could probably taken a load-off uncle's shoulders.

I would love for folks like these, to be financially comfortable. Able to put aside for retirement. But most modestly popular hawkers struggle to keep their heads above the water, with majority of the earnings go to rent. And many popular ones, make more money so that they can buy condo and Merc, and hire someone to do the work. Riding on their brand name, with their food having higher prices and degraded quality. And people soon say "the taste not like last time leh", or... "why people say until so good? so-so only what" for people new to the stall.
