Heatstroke can be a rapid killer so learning how to cool a dog down quickly and prevent heatstroke might just save your dogs life.
Heatstroke in dogs is a serious risk and it doesn't even need to be that hot outside. A warm spring day can be just as risky as a hot summer one. If your dog has not had time to adapt and become acclimatized then an un-seasonally warm spell may be enough.
Learning how to cool a dog down quickly can be life saving. Heatstroke is a true dog emergency but it has been shown that if an owner cools their dog down before taking them to the vet then the chance of dying is greatly reduced.
Join me as I go through and explain 5 key steps to cool your dog if you are worried they might be developing heatstroke. Cooling your dog off is not the end of their care. Heat stroke can cause multi-organ failure and so taking your dog to the vet quickly is a key step to ensuring their survival.

Thank you much you just saved my dog.Took her for a very short walk. And when we got home she started foaming and bleeding from mouth. So I got a cold towel and cooled her down.she is ok now.

Keep a close eye on her as the effects of heatstroke can be a bit delayed, although this is unlikely if she is 100% now. Great job for taking quick action!

Just be sure to do it gradually or the dog can go into shock

live in asia, so i think dogs are naturally more used to the hot weather here, but yeah don't take it for walks in midday (after 4pm or before 10am is fine) and keep it in the shade or indoors

2:07 I put my large rhodesian ridgeback boxer mix in the luke warm shower with me. He is no longer panting after we got out and hes in front of fan in bed. Heavy panting non stop and excessive drinking started 3 days ago after leaving boarding. Hope this helps him all together.

I almost lost my dog today. I don't know what her temperature was but she was limp, panting, could not move, eyes glazed over. I took her to the kiddie pool and poured cool water on her, put ice packs on her head. Then remembered that I had a thermometer. Her temperature was about 104 by then. But she had gotten into the car when we were unloading groceries. I was looking for her and we couldn't find her. I realized she must be in the car and my gut took a blow, my heart sank. I ran and opened the door. It was so hot in there, and I think she siezed. But after 30 minutes of cooling her down to 96.5 degrees she started to want to walk and drank water. Finally she was fine though maybe I cooled her too fast, she was shaking a little. She seems fine now but taking her to the vet in the morning.

I hope she's doing well now. Normal temperature in a dog is around 100.4 - 102.2 (38-39 oC). If she only got to 104 then I would hope that recovery should be uneventful

@@OurPetsHealth Oh good!!! She was completely limp and I had tried cooling her down for a few minutes before checking and she was at 104.6 I got her down 96 before stopping and drying her off and she ran around again after a bit. OMG I was scared.

A tip I heard was putting alchol on their paws as it evaporates faster than water allowing the heat to disapate faster. Is this true?
@mollrop

I see a lot of comments about their dogs back legs going out. If you have a retriever get your dog tested for excercise induced collapse! It's a genetic disease that can present very similarly to heat stroke.

our aussie likes to run real fast like madness instead of a leisurely light jog. she doesnt want to stop ever. but i get nervous because she pants and her stomach and lungs are moving so fast like she is having tremors . i stop her exercise. and i watched her to see when she would slow down. i think it took 20-30 mins for her panting to stop. we gave water and i fanned her. is this normal for an aussie young one 2.5 years old. she is the only wild one when we go out tugging jumping and playing really hard.

You should probably not have a Siberian husky in such a hot climate, absolutely awful.

@@kchand20 huskies are actually able to adjust their metabolisms to suit their climate, so the heat shouldn’t actually be a problem. But it’s a big difference if the pup is used to ac, and then gets shoved into Arizona sun. No wonder she would be hot
@kchand20
@kchand20 2 жыл бұрын
@@hydieblack7686 they can tolerate them but they won’t thrive. I can tolerate 35 Celsius every day, doesn’t mean I’ll be happy. The truth is huskies thrive in the cold, they’re not themselves even in temperate climates. Husky owners delude themselves.
