Welcome to our historic home tour of this incredible historic mansion, and it's museum worthy collections. Richmond offers us a textbook look at the architectural evolution of the built environment of the late eighteenth century through the mid-nineteenth century.
The property was originally owned by Juan St. Germaine, a Native American interpreter. Local and family tradition claim a first construction date of 1784 for the mansion, though other sources use a ca. 1800-1810 date based on details of the original interior's Federal style woodwork.[
In 1832, the property was purchased for $7,500 by Levin R. Marshall, a wealthy banker and planter who was the first president of the Commercial Bank. Shortly after, the furniture, which is still there, was shipped from New York City. Improvements were made in 1832, and by 1840, the house had been extended to the west with an addition in the Greek Revival architectural style. A third section was added in 1860.
Marshall was a wealthy businessman. His son, George, married a daughter of the very rich planter David Hunt and resided at Lansdowne. Richmond passed to Marshall's widow upon his death at age 69 in 1870, and was still occupied by the Marshall family in 2011.
Join us in to see this stunning home in person and get the full tour during Spring Pilgrimage 2025, March 27-30 and April 3-6. Two weekends only and limited tickets! Tickets available soon!

Richmond is such a rare treasure of intact furnishings and floor and wall coverings. Truly a walk back in time. So great to see homes that have never been restored but have lovingly been preserved by each succeeding generation.

Oh my goodness, the photo of her seated aunt serving tea or coffee at the end of table flooded my mind with memories of my grandmother, her friends, and even my mother and her friends in my youngest years. Such was common at special events in our family home when I was a young child!

I never realized how much preserved history there is in Mississippi. My aunt came from there to Michigan, and my mom’s family were a little unaccepting of her fancy ways. Now I wish I could have gotten to know her better.

The history is strong with this one. Really fascinating to see the three styles so clearly. And what a terrific collection of bathing items! This may sound odd, but I always feel that furniture and other items that have been surrounded/used by the same people for decades retain a bit of of their energy. I can so easily imagine the parties, as well as the lady of the house and her staff at their daily tasks. There are so many beautiful things in this home, but what makes them truly special is their history, and the personal stories passed down by this family.

A bit disjointed, a bit creepy, and utterly fascinating. The three builds are so distinct from one another and easy to distinguish; chock-full of period furniture and artifacts. I love that it has not been overhauled and modernized. The home(s) appear to have been left in their original state, for the most part, and one can really feel the ambience of the time periods. Just a truly unique experience touring this place. A truly lovely video journey...thank you RN for bring us another remarkable home!❤

Love it! Never have I seen any of those tubs and especially that shower! To have three different styles of house(s) in one is a feat all by itself. And the intricate details of so many items in the house, well, it is just a sight to see and behold. Makes me want to start touring there and even in my state of Virginia where we have many historical properties. After all, Richmond is here too!

Sobering tub...ok, if that man spent all that time & $ to get drunk, then they come home & get thrown in there to sober up, he probably would be worse to put up with. But i guess it was pay-back to throw him in that cold water & leave him there all night NOT TO DROWN. 😂 Thank you for the tour. Loved it.
