Any knowledge that can save $$ is GOOD. I mow the lawn, trim my climbing roses every spring, paint my fence, polish my windows, clean the house... Cero $$ and I am debt free since Dec '18 and saving 4.5 salaries every year, saving for pension and renovate my own apartment step by step. Think about how many hours you need to work and tax away before you have $40 in your hand. I did, because a handyman charges $45/hour and I need to work 4.5 hours (!!!), pay tax, pay the handyman his $$, then he has got $13 left for each hour after tax (!!!). It is throwing my work pay out the window. So I figured it was better to do the job myself, as I am meticulous. It has turned out very well, as I don't renovate or paint all the time. Also, it's a very good feeling to manage your things yourself.

I invest about $300-$400 a month towards my investments, I make around $2200 a month, plus paying off my credit cards that are less than 2k and student loans which is only $8k, plus bills and rent *whew, so it definitely can be done if you put your mind to it! 👍🏼

For people that come from a culture where divorce is uncommon, it is even more important. to choose the right life partner to be financially independent and successful. In other cultures, if something does not work, divorce the partner, choose a better one and live life successfully and happily. Several very successful people are living examples of this.

One thing I would add is if you use credit cards, track every expense and don't track using an automated system as that puts it out of your mind. Use a manual system that you type in every purchase you make. It helps put your finances at the forefront of your mind and it makes you look really hard and question yourself on spending especially when going over budget!

I like this way of calculating savings rate. I was not taking into account the money that I voluntarily contribute to my retirement pretax and I was only calculating what was going to my post-tax investment accounts. This new shift in perspective has me at a 57% savings rate! Up from 42% when calculated the old way.

Hey A+C great vid as always!!! I can't believe you didn't mention secondhand shops and libraries. Since I discovered them (a bit late in life I admit!) I never see buying books and clothes the same way!!! I used to think that a piece for $20 at Winners is a deal, now I think twice if it's over 5! (Bought epic brand new Patagonia rain jacket for $5, original tag was $200). I used to spend tons of $$$ on books and taking pride in it, as many do. Now I think buying books is to be viewed as a charity giving, which is why buying books by dead authors is out... I hope this helps others too.

The is the first time I’ve heard someone talk about paying down on your primary residence as adding to the savings rate. That’s exciting as it IS adding to overall net worth real estate assets gain equity. Thanks for adding to my knowledge

This is such a fantastic video. Just my opinion but this is for everyone no matter the income. I save in so many ways. Like you suggested diy even laundry detergent. Use cash and save the change in a jar. Just a couple of examples

How do you calculate the 70% savings rate? Is it pre-tax or post-tax or a combination of both?
@OurRichJourney
@OurRichJourney 3 жыл бұрын
It depends on your situation. If you're contributing pre and post dollars, you can do a combination. You just have to be consistent each time with how you do your calculation so rate isn't skewed inaccurately.

I've never thought to calculate my savings rate... If I add the money I am putting aside each month plus the cash flow from my real estate portfolio plus the pricipla paydown from all by mortgages, I'm saving about 50% 😯
