My Mom always floured the meat and fried it till brown. She had the old guardian pans that she used everyday. When she drug out the roaster we would get sooo excited because it was either beef roast or stew with homemade buns. Oh my goodness I can still taste them😋. I love hearing stories of people's childhoods and how they lived. I could listen to you all day♥️ Thanks for the video and yes a cornbread video would be great! Seems everyone makes it different so I would love to know if Canadians make theirs different. Have a blessed week💕🙏🏼💕

I always toss the meat in flour, then brown it. It gives a nice flavor and also helps to thicken the stew a bit. I also add celery to mine. I buy the tins of tomato paste, so much cheaper, i put the leftovers in a small ice cube tray and freeze them. When i need some, i just pop one out and add to what i am making, soup, stew, etc..

Loved the recipe, I have always fixed stew in my Crockpot, but I will definitely try fixing it in the oven. You give really clear directions. I loved the stories about your family. Did your dad make socks for the kids? What great memories you must have.

My Mum floured the meat too, so that is what I do. I find it thickens up the sauce much easier. We also put in turnip, but Mum never used canned tomatoes, so I don't put them in either. We always simmer it on top of the stove, and had Dumplings on the top. I must make a pot of stew before the cold weather is over!❤

Hi Colleen. I live in central Pennsylvania (about 30 miles from Imler!). I smile as I listen to the stories about your family as they sound so similar to my life on the farm. I grew up in the Philadelphia area. Never ate venison, never saw a fully stocked fruit cellar in the fall, never saw a full deep freeze after hunting season. What a hard yet wonderful life. Love to hear about your family.

I make this stew too, especially on a cold day. I put my Dutch oven on the stove and start with onions, and stewing beef till browned over some olive oil. Then I add layers of celery, carrots, and add Worcestershire sauce, Himalayan salt, cracked pepper. I add my potatoes (quartered) with their skin, cover with water, then add Brussels sprouts or corn, depending on what I have. I add bay leaves too. It goes into a pre-heated oven at 350 degrees for 2 hrs. (Sometimes I’ll keep the liquid from making a pot roast to keep for my stews, as a stock). I’ve never added a tomato sauce to my stew, I’ll have to try that. Thank you for sharing your recipe xoxo

Lovely video and recipe. I always like hearing your stories. The blob of butter and flour you use to thicken at the end is called “beurre manié”. Basically a reverse roux. Tfs.

Yes, first season meat, coat with flour, brown in hot pan and oil, do not over crowd the meat. If temperature is too low or there is too much meat in pan, juices will come out of meat. Also, while pan is hot add tomato paste - this intensifies flavor. Also add garlic at this time. Instead of using all beef broth, use about 1/4 chicken broth. This truly improves the flavor of stews. Celery is a must! If you leave the lid off while in oven, there will be additional browning of the meat and vegetables - stir every 30 minutes. Serve with crusty thick bread that you can dunk in the gravy.
