All the other characters are probably more experienced than the main 3 leading the film. They will probably understand in time that expression is not a choice for us but is inherent in us. They should probably come and live in India for a month to understand a decimal of it.😂😂🤣😂 Still, the best critics than the one we have in India.

Indian women traditionally put red-colored 'sindoor' in the centre parting of their hair. The husband puts it on her during the wedding ceremony. Its the mark of devotion to the marriage bond.

Also he wanted to scar her like moon has spots & she was spotless. But bcoz of the blood on her forehead which Devdas runs it up her hair-parting. Its symbolic of Sindoor that he put in her parting. So they got their wish to be "kinda sorta married" she is his 1st. Even if the world won't accept & it be embarrassment if they elope which she had already brought shame by spending late night at His place when her mother was humiliated. So they can't marry each other after that. But he put "Sindoor of blood" in her hair parting so she is his 1st. And then when she is going away she shows him she carry the lamp she always had of faith n wishes n prayer for him

It was the most expensive Hindi film (unadjusted for inflation) to be released at that time. When other directors would stick to a budget of 5-10 crores, to make his labour of love, Sanjay Leela Bhansali created this masterpiece at a whopping 50 crores. It was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Foreign Language Film(one of the only 2 Indian films nominated so far) and was also India's submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It was ranked #74 in Empire magazine's "The 100 Best Films Of World Cinema" in 2010.TIME magazine named Devdas as the best movie of 2002 among all the movies released around the world that year.The film was also included in TIME's top 10 movies of the millennium worldwide.

Another perspective is, the supporting characters are the triggers for what happens to the leads. Those supporting characters' voices were loud in their heads (hence the loud acting) and the leads were submissive to the pressures and so their expression was also more subdued and grounded.

@garimakilledar5810
@garimakilledar5810 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah.. Exactly! Many directors especially in old films and TV Serials do this, if you notice. They deliberately make the supporting characters loud and caricaturish coz they want to show them just in relation to the lead characters and the effect they have on lead characters just to make the leads the 'highlight' of the show. This has changed in recent times, when every character has an independent character ark and a backstory and hence they look more realistic and believable but this also "distributes" the spotlight from the lead actors.

SWADES?? Wohaa....Ha...ha. It's the most stupid movie made and that's too by the director of "Lagaan", obviously the brain of Aamir was behind that movie which wasn't in this and SRK also didn't had any. I'm not talking about the acting, but the whole story concept was stupid. I'm saying this as a person who knows the subject of 'water' and its nature. When one decides to make a movie on a subject of science / technology or sports, etc. then he must once sit with its expert to finalise a believable script. At least "Chak De India" does justice with it. But "Swades" fails so miserably that it still after so many years, makes me (and many of my friends) laugh. We still sometimes say, "Ye kaisa kaam kiya hai, tumne to is ka Swades hi banaa dala...ha...ha...ha...

I understand from where Korbin's analysis is striking here. Even though me and my cousins used to love Shah Rukh Khan and Bollywood since he really made us dwell in it and enchant us with its nuances, we still would be like oh God, what drama, and wth is this song etc since we were raised in abroad. After moving to India I understood - Korbin, that actually the whole hyperbolic dramatization of the lady is a reflection of how people actually express in India, when a son comes home, the mother actually "jumps", in India emotions are not subtle, few have started applying the subtleties, may be because of the penetration of series from the western world Again, I totally can feel in my skin what you are saying since I still have the memory of me and my cousins being all "doo doo" while these scenes would cover our screens. We were raised in a culture which is not very hyperbolic, however I totally understand Sanjay Leela Bhansali's allowance of the exaggeration, if not his teachings being injected in their acting. I feel it is hard for us to understand movies from different cultures unless we don't understand the roots of the culture. One starts developing understanding once he/she crosses the periphery of a particular culture. It is really important to have a good amount of internalization of the culture before understanding in totality the expression of any movie. N.B : I have become so dramatic myself :p
@LaVictoireRosee

Idk... I'm Bengali, and my family is very repressed, except when it comes to anger. All other emotions are pretty tame. When my mom watched it with the first time, she was so annoyed with the melodrama, especially because Bengali cinema is a lot more subtle than Hindi cinema. The original Dilip Kumar version made me cry as a kid, but I didn't feel a thing for SRK's Devdas. I just had a headache. I find South Indians to be the most chill of Indians. India is a big place. So I guess my experience of India is very different from yours since it's about localities.

So he hit her randomly and Rick is so right about the symbolism part! He did it coz colour of blood is red and colour of sindoor or vermillion is red too! So he hit her on the forehead and blood spilled just near the centre parting thus symbolising their love and longing. In many old movies u can see actors cutting their thumb a bit and putting their blood as sindoor on their lady love claiming to be married. Blood is sindoor for them. In Devdas that is what was shown in a symbolic way. That they belong together and to each other despite one getting married.

The movie glamourised Dev's abuse and petulance. In the novel, he's meant to be impulsive, and abuse. The original scene is that he hits her on the face with a branch or something and actually says "you are beautiful like the moon, but even the moon has scars, and now so do you". Dev was an alcoholic man-child, with anger management issues and the novel was a commentary on Bengal's class based society, and hypocrisy.

HIT - It was not a random hit. In Book Devdas is actually a person who also abuse Paro to show his love. In that scene he says Paro is beautiful as a moon but moon has scars on it and then he hit her and says the scar that now she has is by Devdas and it will be there till she lives. It is such a good symbolism .

It would be interesting to see your reactions to other adaptations of the same story! Dev D came out 7 years after this version of Devdas, and it's set in the modern era and is much edgier (by Anurag Kashyap). There's also an old arthouse film (Devdas, dir: Bimal Roy, 1955) that was considered the "definitive version" of this story before the 2002 version you just watched. It's known for being restrained, realistic, and intimate. There's a huge list of adaptations on the Devdas wikipedia page (including a genderbent lesbian version which I had never heard of!) but those two are the most notable adaptations that you haven't seen. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devdas It's THE most adapted story to the big screen, with about 20 adaptations till date, since the book came out in 1917.

The out of the blue smacking thing is not actually sudden. She tries to convince Devdas that she has been insulted by his choices and that he cannot just barge in and proclaim his love because she is indebted to her mother as her mother was insulted so to drive away Devdas she delivers proud and haughty conversation due to which Devdas asks even the moon doesn’t have so much pride..in India a beautiful is often compared to moon..so Paro replies that the moon can’t be proud because she has marks on her and I am untainted. So Devdas hits her to create a mark on her forehead..like the moon now even she has a mark and therefore can’t be proud anymore because their love for Devdas is unique and down to earth, marked by Society and norms and not proud...it is also kind of symbolic because Devdas let’s her go and make her own decision but also gives her the mark so that she remembers that they belong to each other...the third meaning is he tries to console the injury with love by patting it and in the process spreads the blood in her hair parting from between..in our culture applying vermillion there is validation of marriage..so Devdas pats it feeling bad that he hit her but unknowingly spreads the red colour there which for Paro is vermilion on her forehead therefore before she gets married to someone else her and Devdas relationship gets validation with that little red colour and this they are bound for life...if you notice in the song following the incident she holds his hand silently asking her mom to let them be together but her mom doesn’t say anything which depicts that she is strict on her promise to Devdas mom and she hasn’t forgotten her insult yet.

Agree with Korbin about bigness vs believability but Jim Carrey can do serious roles - The Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind, The Majestic. I wonder if you guys do exclusively international/bollywood movies.. I would love to hear your thoughts on David Lynch. David Lynch movies are usually love it or hate it affairs. Some think they are overindulgent ego trips, or pretentious, overly symbolic mishmashes that need the cinematic equivalent of a Rosetta stone to decipher. Mulholand Dr is one of my favorite movies...

But I do understand Corbin's side as well. One thing I learnt from you guys is how to differentiate between movies when showing them to foreign audiences in terms of exposure. YESSS I'm so glad you watched this! All the discussion re: overdramatic stage acting and subtle realistic acting and how Indian cinema has evolved at a different pace -- 1000% TRUE!! I'd love to sit with you and have a proper discussion about this because as an Indian brought up in Australia, my parents watched Bollywood films during my childhood in the 90s, and the acting at that time was much much more like stage acting (it was the heyday of romantic musicals and Shah Rukh Khan). In my child brain, I equated Bollywood with melodrama and cringe, and was borderline embarrased that I was even Indian (I lived in a /very/ white area). As I became older, my understanding of acting became more nuanced than just good acting vs bad acting, and I understood that different audiences have different expectations re: how "cartoony" they expect the acting to be. At the same time, Bollywood cinema saw a DRAMATIC shift towards the more subtle and naturalistic kind of acting that was also gaining traction in Hollywood. I say "Bollywood films" because arthouse films (in any language) have always been more in the "sublte realistic low-key" style, and if you look at South Indian cinema, today it is still waaaay more camp and over the top than anything you have ever seen. But it's not necessarily "bad", because hey - look at the numbers! Clearly it is connecting with its audience. By the way - my parents (and I'm sure many older Indians) don't enjoy the current "subtler" trend of acting going on. It's the same reason why they never got into Western cinema - they find the acting wooden, a lot of the subtlety goes over their heads, and as a result they can't even follow the story's character arc. They can't consume it comfortably, because it doesn't line up with their expectations, so even if they are engaged, it's a frustrating experience. I guess Korbin is experiencing this right now! Anyway I have a lot to say on this. If anyone wants to have a discussion about it, PM me!!

Firstly, you guys are amazing! I was very happy to see this contrast. My take on 'Devdas' is that it is undoubtedly one of the best Indian movies, a masterpiece, truly put. Three best actors of Bollywood, 2 most beautiful women & one of the best actress in the world and Madhuri Dixit is the SRK among female actresses. But, to be fair to Korbin, this is the contrast to all the movies you guys saw before. Now, most of the previous movies are young and 21st-century vibe, with action, fast music, and Indian yet western-fit storyline. Devdas represents the period of the era of Bollywood when a simple slow story that evolves with time. It was made extraordinary by acting, simple moments & great dialogues. So, having seen all the exciting, modern Indian movies if you delve in the 90s and some early 21st century movies of such genre, it's difficult to get it in one go. Thus, I do understand the Korbin side. But, Rick, spot on man! You really got the gist and deducted things in a great way. This is just my side and I am a 'Stupid'. I love your content guys, keep it coming. Lots of love!
