All legends of indian music in a single project.....that drum/percussion player is shivamani, he is legendarily skilled...& As far as i know, he only plays with a.r.rahman....to talk about ustaad gulam mustafa khan with my miniature knowledge is a mistake, so i wont....he is Padmabhushan, the highest national award winner for his lifetime work on indian classical music and internationally well acclaimed.....

That’s ‘Snake Cymbal’. I had the lifetime opportunity of witnessing this Coke Studio shoot in 2013. Bumped into Sivamani in one of the lunch breaks and got to know about the name of this cymbal from the man himself. Lot of ingenuity in his percussions. Please watch ‘Zariya’ (from the same CStudio 3 A R Rahman episode) to see how he dips bells in a bucket of water to create distorted sounds :)

This is one of best and amazing works of ARR and how he brings and blends different taste of music from Hindustani Classical music to Carnatic music and Western music as well. Ustad Ji and his three generations on a single stage. A great tumhri/bandish (sorry for my lack of knowledge) for his grandfather. Shivamani the best percussionist in India or even could easily come in top list in world. Mohini Dey a prodigy in playing bass guitar. And behold for the one and only Prasanna the legend for me the way he plays carnatic music on guitar. Funny thing there are parts where Shivamani is not even playing and ARR also but just the beat and swaras are having that effect that they are lost in it.. like all of us. This is the perfection piece from Coke Studio India (other one is Ki banu duniya da by Gurudass Mann Sahab) and part of this composition contains some inspiration from ARR tamil song, don't know which one though, right now. Hearing this you wonder, how people still remember ARR for Jai Ho ? Its great how greatness is always hidden, yet always ahead of us all the time, like God and great music. Have a great day, everyone! 😊👍

The Tamil song you refer to in the piano riff is from ‘Swaasame’ from the movie Tenali. Incidentally its title track is a fabulous treatise on harmonies and Shankar Mahadevan’s vocal wizardry lifts it high-another AR masterpiece

Prassana is one of my fav guitarists. He tunes the guitar in an alternate Indian tuning. So the guitar is usually tuned in one scale whichever the singer chooses. Thus he is able to replicate them. The standard tuning in guitar will not facilitate the ease of movements among the notes.

Ghulam Mustafa Khan one of the artistes par excellence. A kind of artist for artists, belongs to the generation who believed singing for Bollywood was artistic compromise. A great artist and humble person to boot. We have not yet figured out how the great classical artists can be appreciated, this is a good experiment of convergence. Not enough people know Ghulam Mustafa Khan sadly.
