For Saurav Ganguly (nicknamed Prince of Calcutta, Maharaja, God of the Off-Side, Captain Courageous, etc), dancing down the ground is a shot that I haven't seen anyone else doing successfully. Many have tried over the years, but all got out trying. The accuracy of Ganguly in that shot is just exceptional. It's not easy to play that shot against bowlers bowling at 90-95 mph. But Ganguly was of a different class altogether.

Let me tell you this... Sachin's "straight drive" is by far the toughest shot ever because bowler is bowling the ball at 140 straight to your bat with some swing on it and you have to hit that ball without experiencing any deflection on bat and direct it for a boundary. That is Tough !! And the fact Sachin could do that so effortlessly. 🔥🔥

6:07 Idk why they wrote Dancing before "Down the ground" but it's actually the fact that Ganguly takes a couple of steps forward before hitting the ball... It's spcifically done against spinners/slow-pace bowlers since the balls are bowled slower and by running closer to it you don't give the ball the chance to spin of the ground and change direction making you miss the ball. Coz you're hitting it just after it barely bounced or sometimes you hit it even before it gets a chance to bounce.

Straight drive is probably the hardest shot in the book...you have to prejudge the bounce, the length, the line ...your body has to be in a balancing equilibrium...and you have to hit from the sweet spot of the bottom of the bat....and bottom of the bat is where you get the least amount of thrust...so it's all about timing and finesse

'Dancing down the ground' is basically shuffling down the pitch and closing in the distance between the batsman and the spot where the ball lands as in cricket the ball's movement vary according to different pitch/ playing surfaces and it can even vary in different parts of the same playing surface like in one section of the playing surface the ball may bounce too much or too low which will make it uncomfortable for batsman to play and at another section of same playing surface or at a single crack of the playing surface the ball will turn very sharply, again making it harder for batsman to predict and play. So when you move closer to the ball 'dancing down the wicket', the objective is to hit it as soon as the ball lands on the ground in order to nullify ball's movement/behaviour post-landing and ultimately making it a half volley which is way easier to hit for a six.

So here's something to know about the fielding placement and the drives ... 1. The batsmen play these shots while finding the gaps between fielders 2. These are hard to play shots and often could go wrong. So the fielders are placed often in places where the shot could go wrong and they can catch the ball and get them out. Fun fact, depending on the field placement a good batsman can tell what kind of a ball he could get.
@siriusthegrim2 жыл бұрын
A couple of things I noticed: 1. Ganguly's backfoot drive through point and cover was equally his signature shot as "dancing down the ground". In the 90s, a team could have as many as 5 fielders in the cover-point region and Ganguly would still find the gap. 2. Dravid's square cut and leg glance are more signature shots compared to his cover drive. Whenever I think of Dravid, I immediately remember his wristy square cuts, leg glances or even his on-drive, more than any cover drives. 3. Although I would begrudgingly admit that the straight drive is Sachin's signature, it feels wrong to attribute a single signature shot to the little master. He had so many shots that he uniquely played (including the very rarely used paddle sweep at the time). As a trivia to anyone that watched Indian cricket through the 90s and 2000s, what shots do these memories evoke? Every one of these shots has a signature Sachin memory to them. a. Hook shot b. Back-foot pull c. Cover drive d. Back-foot punch through covers (my favorite, because of how tricky it was to execute) e. Lofted straight drive f. Paddle sweep The one shot that Sachin maybe used minimally in his career was the reverse sweep. I haven't any memories of special reverse sweeps from him, but all other shots, he was a master of.. and that is why it feels wrong to have a signature shot for him.

7:00 This shot is named after the way you hit and the fielding position. Every fielder on the ground don't stand randomly but on a particular position and all those positions have names... In this case, the shot is called a drive since the batsman drives the ball towards the cover fielding position and beating any fielder if there is one standing in the cover position... Edit: You can just google cricket fielding positions. Like the straight drive is said so because the positions/ area there is straight to the batter and yes there are fielders who can stand there. Fielding teams set field ina particular setting and the bowler has to bowl accordingly to get the batsman out by forcing him to play a certain shot...

Dancing down--"taking a few steps" an then hitting the ball.. Cover is a position on the field ...placing shot there through driving bat towards ball makes it a Cover drive.

Drives are hardest shot to master in cricket.. If your basics arent right these shots won't get the power behind it.. It purely based on timimg + bat speed or punch. For flicks you need to have strong wrist.. You can also find videos of list of shots played in cricket
