Maria is a super soprano part so this was kind of a weird song choice. For the vocals alone Rachel is a much better fit. Mercedes can go high like we saw in Not Getting Married Today but the role is just so much more suited for Rachel. Also this whole plot was about Mercedes being more empowered and star material when the role of Maria is not really for that. Maria is pretty soft and emotionally fragile. Both are such super stars, but for this: Rachel takes it fairly easily. Just my opinion.

My main problem is that they are using a big-belty song to decide who the better choice for Maria in West Side Story is when there is no belting in that show. Maria sings legit, so who sings a belting song better not only doesn’t help decide that but is a stupid choice that no one points out. At least Rachel can kind of do legit. Mercedes only belts, why would she expect to get the role of Maria, a part that is so vocally different from her?
