Recorded on the 2nd of March 1976 - Rory's 28th Birthday - on the BBC's Old Grey Whistle Test. This is the fourth of 6 tracks performed, 5 of which are from the "Against the Grain" album which had just been released at the time.

No thumbs up! Sorry. I really love and adore him & his play, but Ritchie Blackmore, Tony Iommy, Jimmy Page, Brian May were a bit more impressive on 6 strings way back then: all in all... Maybe the same with him as a singer ... I really love is voice (especially on this track, Bullfrog Blues or Shadow Play), but he ain't a 2nd Ian Gillan (he never had a "Child in Time"- a "Highway Star"or a "When a Blind Man Cries"-moment, asfo), he is no Robert Plant (with "Dazed and Confued" next to many others) or Dio (Over and Over, Stargazer, All the Fools Sailed away, etc.): Maybe he'd been the most talented musical universal genious of that time... But just like Phil Lynott or Gary Moore... That was the age of Superheroes, not of universal geniouses

One of the things that has always fascinated me about Rory's playing is that he makes a unique blend of American blues and Irish traditional music. This particular song is a sparkling example.
@benmcgurk1 Жыл бұрын
Yes. This is a bluesy song in DADGAD tuning!

Another great example is a more recent version of this song from "The Unwanted" who have their roots in Irish trad music: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a2HGdYFpYtlsmrM

It sings...with emotion. The picking is soft and hard and with a flawless rythme. TOTALLY UNDERAPPRECIATED vocally as well, a once in a decade talent ..

A decent volume of traditional American music, such as folk or bluegrass, has roots in the musical traditions that were brought over by the Irish immigrants to the southeastern US.

+lamb998......Why the need for comparisons? I enjoy many varied artists (including early Van) but there's never a need or excuse to knock Rory. The man was an exceptional talent and a beautiful human being who played (brilliantly) for the love of it, nothing more, nothing less. He's also my all-time favourite and about as far removed from "shit" as you could ever hope to get. Might I suggest you give Rory a further listen if you're not familiar with his material?

Rory Gallagher played in the Gondel a little cinema in Bremen in a noble suburb Schwachhausen 1972 in the near of the headquarter of Radio Bremen with its worldfamous Sendesaal. He had given a phantastic live - concert to me as a seventeen I will never forget how modest he behaved although he already became a blues legend with his band Taste Listen to this genius especially On the boards where he is playing a lyrical saxophone like a jazz - star

A lot of people do not know about Rory early life when he was a cowboy and hung out with the other cowboy Phil Lynott. Can you just imagine those 2 bad boys along with their pall Huddie William Ledbetter, Phil Lynott & Rory Gallagher out on the Western Plains robbing banks, smoking cigars, drinking cool beers, upsetting the local sheriff and his deputies, causing major havoc in town and have the times of their lives
