I love this motor! Basic, light and powerful! Also on the tiller arm there should be a throttle tensioner.

Hi Mate, They are awesome motors, raced them competitively for about 7 years 👌 Some did come out without the tensioner unfortunately, super annoying. I’ve just kept one good one for my tinny, added hydraulic trim - tilt, love that motor. cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎

Great video, I have the Tohatsu 30 Hp 2002, same motor you worked on. Mine is difficult to start initially, once it has run not issue. Can you advise how I should set up the trottle and choke when cold starting

Hey bloke love your vids i have the same 25 seapro 2007 model the carb restrictor plate has been removed from the carb wondering what else too do too make it spot on too 30hp. Takes one pull on choke too kick then aprox 6-10 on a bad day too get the start. Is this the norm with this motor given the restrictor is removed.. or does it need the 25° timing and different jets. (Once started runs like a dream one handed sitting starts all day) just lookingbtoo get the best from it. Cheers mate.

nice video my yamaha 30hp seems to have this problem ill have to find out later tho, i have a question about your tohatsu/mercury 5hp motors ive noticed when running my motor ticks rythmically to the piston could this be anything or is it normal, it runs fine and strong but it just sounds off

Hi Mate, Unfortunately with that kind of problem a carburetor overhaul is normally on the cards. Some of the 5hp motors do have a ticking sound also some of the 9.8hp Tohatsu I have found too. It has never caused any issues with the motors I have owned but I have definitely thought the same thing. Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎

@@25hpboatracerman thanks a lot mate a carb overhaul is a short job and i have messed with the top cankcase seal allready so it should be an easy process, allthough im not sure what it exactly is because it doesnt run on choke either but off choke a little and then if i give her all the throttle she runs for a long time but no idle at any reasonable setpoint, also ive been in the caburetor but there was nothing of intrest only a really weird float pin unit contained in a bolt type thing with internal springs and such i havent seen any like it cleaning it was also a pain, any idea what these are called? (for a yamaha 30ae) but i cant find anything

Hi mate, Sounds like some junk in your low speed jet, you need to remove the jets and clean all fuel gullies and make sure each circuit it flowing and clean. That means fully disassemble the carb. I have a carburetor overhaul video you can follow on a 15hp, very similar. The float needle is pretty standard to be spring loaded with the inner section rubber tipped as the fuel stop. So with a lot of outboard carbs these days the idle or low speed has a fixed jet in the carb and idle mix can be adjusted slightly with the adjustment screw but if the fixed jet is blocked or has a restriction the adjustment screw is pointless as it’s too far out to start with. could you help me identify the problem? 1969 mercury merc 110 9.8hp. i believe one of the cylinder is flooding, 1. is this possible? and how? 2. is it electrical issue or fuel issue? weekend boater. when starting again after a week, it starts out strong within 3 pulls. sounds very nice and idles just fine when on land to test with bucket of water. now in marina to test it, it runs fine for about 20 minutes from top speed of around 12mph, i couldnt get it to go faster yet due to conditions but it wants to. then it starts to bog down and stay at 6mph. at this time, when i put it down to shift range, it completely dies and it does not want to idle at all. then when i start to restart it, it idles at start but wants to die in shift range. when i force it to shift into forward, it dies.

Hi Mate, Thanks for your explanation champ. It is very hard to say the exact problem, it could be carburetor, electrical, reeds, overheating or other issues, unfortunately without being able to look at the motor is only speculating. in saying that, I would check if it is getting too hot firstly, when did you do your last impeller? if cooling ok, I would do a carburetor overhaul. thirdly it may be electrical, so possibly stator, charge coils, power pack or coil or rarely plugs. hope this gets you started on the right track. cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎

Hi, i have a 25hp tohatsu same as this, and it seems to foul the plugs with oil every time i take it out, it seems i have the correct mixture. Im switching to a fully synthetic oil but the oil is pricy, how could i fix this issue?

Hi Mate, I have owned a heap of these and never had that issue 🤷‍♂️ I run 50 to 1 fuel mix so every 5 liters of fuel is 100ml of oil. I use normal cheap two stroke outboard oil. In saying foul the plugs, does it stop running or one cylinder cuts out? do you do a lot of idling or trawling? keep me posted mate cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎

@@25hpboatracerman It just stops running completely, mostly cuts out when I’m trying to drive the boat onto the trailer at idle speed with a crowd watching me 😂. I dont do a lot of trawling but it does go through a bit of idling not too much, I try keep the rpm’s up as much as I can.

Hey legend I got this exact same motor. Last trip out ran well as normal all day. Towards end of the day heading back to boat ramp she cut out. Started up fine soon as I put into gear it just killed the motor did this 3 times. Then decided to use the electric motor to get the last 200m back to ramp. When flushed the motor 15mins later it started fine tried putting into gear and was okay.. thoughts? + enjoying the channel mate really handy tips

Hi Mate, That’s frustrating 🤦‍♂️ Finally, starting it up when it’s out of the water is not a great test as with the back pressure when it’s more submerged on the boat it will stall much easier. Did you notice large amounts of steam when you slowed down when it was running well. I have had a motor slightly lock up due to picking up weed and causing an overheat. I would do a compression test just to settle that. If that’s all good, I would do a carburetor overhaul (I have a video on how to do that on the channel for this motor). If that doesn’t work either then check fuel lines for leaks. hoping it just needs a carb overhaul mate. Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎

Hi Mate, Thanks 😊 Made me try remember how long I’ve been at motors. The first motor I got I was 7 years old I believe (3hp twin cylinder evinrude that was seized) I pulled it apart, freed it and used it for about a year. So I guess the answer is over 40 years 😂 I feel old Been hundreds and hundreds of motors since then with me learning more each time (still a lot to learn too) Something about boats and outboards just really makes me so happy, it’s great I can tinker with this stuff. Too lean at idle Definitely all points to fat fat everywhere else. Idle lost the idle note on last lean up and everything else sounds super fat so atleast super safe

Hi Mate, Very correct and well picked up👌 Thats why I said in the video I still need to tune a bit more. Did that off camera as it felt like the motor was taking a while to level out after it’s fuel issue, normally a tune takes me ten seconds 😂. That particular carb has fixed main jets from factory ( I believe they are 1.7mm ) I have tried other main jet sizes in the past on that motor when I was racing but the factory jet size is pretty spot on for performance, yes slightly fat but no slower than the leaner jet so your correct, nice and safe. cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎
