My story of learning about this game was my dad had a coworker who subscribed to this Microsoft Windows PC game magazine in the late 90s, and when this game was out in 1999 when I was 4 years old, he let my dad play the demo version of this game. My dad loved it, and he bought the full game at that point! I've played it SO many times over since! Loved the story, the characters, the music, and the effects of the weapons/equipment! My dad would often mimic the soldiers' callouts or screams in battle and I always laughed at him! No one I ever knew has ever heard of or played this great game and felt as though our family were the only ones in the US who knew about this game. I miss the old Windows 98 and 2000 besides XP! I also now have it on my Xbox, and I look forward to playing the long awaited sequel developed by the same Appeal guys when it's ready!

It's clear to see the remake was made with a much lower budget than they'd hoped, after a failed Kickstarter campaign. I absolutely loved this game and have played it through several times... Was hoping for the remake to look more triple A rather than 5yr old Indy title. But hopefully this gains enough popularity to continue the outcast series with a bigger budget. Maybe we'll finally get Outcast 2?
@Balnazzardi7 жыл бұрын
Well idk....for Kickstarter campaign their goal was 600 000 dollars and for that they would have only updated the game's visuals, pretty much what they now managed to do for this remake. So I would assume the game's budget was somewhere between 600 000 and 1 million. But yes, to be able to fully remake the game, its dated gameplay and poor quality animations, they would have needed much bigger budget. Its a shame that those updated visuals really bring Outcast to life in entirely new way, the game looks incredibly good at times for low budget release, but the gameplay itself as well as those animations/character models obviously are not at the same level and its darn shame, cause Outcast would have deserved those things to be updated to modern day as well. As for Outcast 2, I wouldnt hold my breath unless some bigger company/publisher would be able to see the potential and fund the development. They would at very least need some-one like THQ Nordic to back them up, even more preferably some-one like Microsoft to bring modern triple A game budget and then we would have a chance to get proper, modern sequel to Outcast. But from the sales of this remake (and Outcast 1.1) alone? Not a chance and like said BigBen is small publisher without the kind of funds that would be required for Outcast 2.

I think the remake is really well done visually, yet somehow they managed to make Slade less expressive in the remake. You can see it in the comparison in their mouth movements at 3:35. The biggest pet peeve of mine, however, is that they totally missed the comedic timing of him realising he's talking to an alien at 3:26. In the remake he reacts before he's even properly taken a look at Zokrym. Such a fun, original game either way no matter which version you're playing.

Man, I can't help but think the original just has a much more interesting look. It looked phenomenal back then with a really otherworldly appearance, and the remake just looks "normal" to me. Hold up, they remade the game?! I bought this back in '99 and was so hyped to play it! On the way home from the shop, I was reading the manual and it was talking about alien languages, exploration, and concepts that were beyond many games I'd played at that point. I can barely remember the specifics now, just that I was SO eager to play. I got home, installed the game, watched the intro... And then it crashed. I tried everything I could back then, in an early internet world, to get it working but it just wasn't happening. I thought of returning the game but decided to keep it on the off chance a fix would turn up and I'd be able to play. It's been sat on my shelf since, besides a couple of attempts to run it on newer PC builds, gathering dust. I just looked up at it again and decided to watch some videos to see what it played like, since I was never going to get the chance... And there's a remake?! God, I hope it lives up to the 20+ years of anticipation...

@@pajdovelicanstveni I did, yeah. It was brilliant and bizarre and a little bittersweet. To finally get to play it after so long was very satisfying. Obviously, compared to modern titles it's not as complex, and a lot of the improvements we've made in game design are noticeably missing. At the same time, a lot of the homogonising games have gone through since was lacking. I love the story, and the twists it took. Comparisons to modern games fall flat when I consider how old the game is, though. Outcast was implementing so many gameplay elements long before they became standard. If I'd been able to play the game back in '99 I think it'd be one of my most talked about and loved games. Outcast should be up there as one of the trail blazers of gaming history. - the water looked amazing in the original, in the remake it seems to be dead, no character-inducted waves on the surface - kind of disappointing as the graphics are supposed to be better not worse - the voxel terrain made the world more natural and alien looking at the same time, it is hard to achieve similar impression with the polygons it is hard to mask the straight lines that does not occur in the real landscape that often, still not that bad - the original was very colorful and full of "light efects" (given it's time) the remake looks little too cold - the head shapes of the inhabitants - they had some kind of noblesy in their shapes that seems to be missing in the remake, they just look weird - the rounded font used in the original felt more pleasant and better suiting the atmosphere (i see others may be less sensitive to this :) - the intro, I guess the money ran out? + still going to play the remake, it's the opportunity revive the memories :)

First open world and voxel game. Water and orchestra. It was aawesome. Remaster looks terrible. 18 years of game development got us nowhere. This is a clear example.

I have played the original a few times but didn't notice until now that when running it looks like the Ulukai has pooped in his pants. Once you see it...

Well its still better than nothing. I really wish more people would give either Outcast 1.1 or Outcast Second Contact a chance, cause the game really didnt get the success it deserved the first time around and any support to the devs could encourage them/give them the resources to create a proper sequel.

Balnazzardi just a question about gameplay: is it possible like in 1999 version to run facing the camera (Down arrow key) AND target something rear the hero, very useful when an ennemy chasing you. In my opinion the shoulder camera is too close to the hero for being as good as 1999 version.

it would be fucking awesome if the old engine had some extra effects (pixelshader-water/reflections) because of the much more cpu-power of current machines. it would be totally awesome if thy used a raytracing-engine like the new star-wars-demo instead what they did for the second-contact.

The remake might not be taking full advantage of the PS4 but it still looks pretty cool.

[POLYBLUES] The developers didn't have the money to go full triple A.

I really don't know how I can play the original anymore. I've tried the update and I just can't see myself ever going back unless the original has had some major graphic overhaul mod. Still a real shame on that intro. I don't understand any reason why developers continue to do this. I really don't and they clearly know it's no better.

Cutter Slade managed to get younger but he still sounds like he has throat cancer, like that guy who used to do the movie trailers. I loved the original with all its bugs and weirdness it was still a great game for its day. Just got the new one but haven't played it yet.

I so love the original. If there' was an alternative ending, I would be tempted. I'm old, I can live with the old graphics. I would have prefered more content over updated visuals. It's super cool that they kept the old sounds. It's like a time machine.
