I like the use of those Street Elbows. Good idea.

You made the right decision. The black pipe is for interior gas lines. It rusts very quickly.

I used black pipe 25 years ago and painted it.....still going strong.

Hmmmm so do you remember 25 years ago did you clean the pipe with anything before you painted it? I know I can't remember yesterday.😂😂😂😂

Galvanized spray paint on the ends will take care of rust problems 👍

I like it but i would have had the top 90 rotated 180deg so the top rail is easier to grab while going up steps...the way it is now is incorrect....the way u have it now would be good if stairs were on opposite side of posts

I like the idea though...i may do this..its cheaper and much stronger and longer lasting than all the costly thin gauge rail kit crap at big box store

To fix it in place, id tack weld all the threaded areas. And then I would paint it. The paint will also protect against rust.

welding is a special skill and $$ equipment.

Wire brush the rust area and wipe it down with a clean cloth and Home Depot sells galvanizing paint in spray can and painted areas.

Maybe galv. Rustoleum paint and maybe some kind of lock tite for the threads.

Not very good! first of all the elbows should point towards the step so you don't have to reach over them to grab the railing, second , the main attachment point is very weak being that you've used the floor flange to support the entire system, it's made of cast iron and is very susceptible to fracture, try and drill through the rail post and insert a carriage bolt through that and the stair stringer then use a nut and washer to add strength to the rail post. Good luck if you don't alter your plan, if you really need that railing it better be strong!

I chose to point the elbows away for two reasons: a) I'm a tall guy with long arms (and nearly the only user); and b) I carry large, bulky items so I need a wide stairway. Thanks for your review.
