***IMPORTANT UPDATE*** - PhotoPills has updated the app so that you NO LONGER need to add both the height of the building and the elevation difference between the red and black pins when calculating the apparent height of the moon over a building -- you only need to input the height of the building.

Brenda, you are absolutely fantastic as a teacher because you are capable of reading the minds of learners. While Rafael at PhotoPills is great, I find his speed (the screen and speech) and accent very difficult to follow. Also, the inclusion of the smartphone screen when necessary, and highlighting what you are referring to, makes it a breeze to follow what you are teaching. I am very grateful to you as a brilliant teacher. Thank you very much!

I have a hard time working with cellphone. This is where you talk about the 11 white dots for different pills. I use Samsung tablets and there are only 6 white dots. After the tablet I realized that on the tablet each white dot is actually good for two pills. For example the first white dot shows Sun and Moon on one side and then the two dots for distance and Azimuth. Once I understood that my life became just a little easier.

I am imagining a bunch of camerapeople bashing each other to get that one spot. LOL. You have done a great job presenting this, and I thank you very much for that. Any planning I do will be of this (at home) type since my photography is done in forays according to a schedule created by my wonderful wife so I pretty much get what's there when I arrive. At least this way, I can see what might be available and plan for that. I will not be on the pier as I'm too far away, but I am marking my Calendar to check the news this December. Be safe and be well.

Thanks again for another informative video. I look forward to PhotoPills Friday. I’m confused about one thing: I thought PhotoPills already takes into account the difference in elevation between the red and black pin; therefore you don’t need to add that to the statue elevation. But I noticed you added it when calculating the apparent height. Please confirm this. Many thanks!
@outdoorphotographyschool73664 жыл бұрын
Hi Merrill, Glad you're enjoying the series! PhotoPills does take into account the elevation difference between the red and black pins *except* for when the black pin is on a man-made object, such as a statue or building. In this case, the black pin takes into account the elevation of the structure at ground level, which is why you have to research the height of the structure to be able to calculate the desired apparent height of the moon.
@merrillthompson82484 жыл бұрын
@@outdoorphotographyschool7366 . Hi Brenda. Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, I understand that we have to add the height of the statue to determine the apparent height we want the moon to be. But I thought PhotoPills already took into account the ground level elevation difference between the red and black pin - meaning we only enter 305ft in the elevation box for "Apparent height above blue pin". That is what I was trying to say in my first comment. Thanks again.
@rbboser4 жыл бұрын
@@merrillthompson8248 - I believe Merrill is correct. An earlier version of photopills required you to adjust manually for differences in elevation between the red and black pins. But the current version already accounts for this. So an adjustment is no longer needed with the latest Photopills version. Excellent video instruction by the way. I've taken a Photopills workshop from one of the designers, and I'm still learning from this series. Thank you Brenda!

Hi, thanks for the great video. Easy to follow and understand. The question i have when it gives the time of the moon, is the time your time or local time?
@outdoorphotographyschool73664 жыл бұрын
Hi Wayne - great question. The time in the timeline of the planner is the time of the location of the red pin. You can move the timeline forward and backward to change the time, and you can also tap on the timeline to pull up the date and time settings to set the time and date manually. From there, you can also select whether or not your current location's timezone is autodetected or not.

I have owned PhotoPills for over two years now, and thanks to your videos I am "getting it"! Thanks so much. One thing isn't working for me in this episode no matter how closely I follow the video however - after I get to the point where I place the two pins, I am getting the identical values you show in the geodetic pin panel EXCEPT the altitude difference is always 0 feet. @outdoorphotographyschool73664 жыл бұрын
Hi Lee - thanks! Glad the videos are helpful! Yes, it seems that when people get different results as you describe, it's because we are using different elevation providers. So, go to My Stuff --> Settings --> Elevation Service Provider. I use Google because it's supposed to be more accurate.

Hi Michael - As I said to Steve above, I checked in with The Bard from PhotoPills, and he said that the only thing that could be different is the Elevation Provider. So, go to My Stuff-->Settings-->Elevation Provider and choose Google Api, which is more accurate. Let me know how it goes.

HI Brenda. Love your vids as I find them so informative and easy to understand. I do have one question though regarding the placement of the black pin as there seems to be somewhat of a controversy over whether or not it is placed on the bottom or top of a subject and in this case let's use the SOL which you feature in this vid. You said that you wanted the moon to be directly behind the torch. The height of the torch was determined to be 321 feet and then you worked the plot so that the rise line and dotted white lines were aligned. Going back to the pin to pin panel you found the moon height was a little too high so you reworked the plot to get the moon to be 321 feet above the black as noted in the panel. So here's the question, by doing this, isn't the moon too high to be centered behind the torch if it's 321 feet over the torch. It seems like it might be sitting on the torch? Is the "moon height over the black pin" in the pin to pin panel measured from the center of the moon or the bottom of the moon over the black pin? My main concern is an upcoming plot I'm working on for a full moonrise behind the Edge, which is a structure in New York City's Hudson Yards. It is the tallest outdoor observation deck in the Western Hemisphere The edge protrudes 80 feet out of the side of a building and is at an elevation of 1100 feet. The building itself extends another few hundred feet higher than :the edge". The shot would be from across the Hudson River in NJ and the idea is to get all the people standing out on "the Edge" silhouetted by a giant moon rising behind them. So at this point it's pretty critical as to where to moon is going to pass as it rises....if it passes over the top of the building or midway, the shot is no good. Placing of the black pin is critical and there seems to be one whole group that says it goes on the top of the building and another that says it goes on the bottom. I'm just curious of how you feel about this and was wondering if the black pin was placed directly on "the edge" (with the elevation set at 1100 feet) and I worked the plot lines so that the moon was O feet over the black pin, do you think that would work. So sorry for the long winded question, but I've been struggling with this one. Thanks again for all your episodes!
