I'm Very impressed that you were able to leave a full oil drain pan under the area you were working until 47:11 and never dropped anything into the pan. I changed the oil on my wife's 2009 outback today and never spilled a drop of oil. That has got to be the 2nd time I was able to do that in my 45 years of working on cars.

As a ATV shop owner it soothes me to see one of THE hands down, BEST mechanics in this country go right back down to an average man working on this junk! Love it. In all seriousness, for what you are using that for. Ok bike. For an ATV. Garbage. Rough riding CRUDE machine. That is a good low hour one. Hard to pull start?! They and a Kawasaki 400 will literally, end your shoulder for life. No joke. Brutal. I will NOT attempt to pull them! Get you a Honda for an ATV Eric, and leave this one where it belongs, on pavement pushing cars.

Had a Bruin 350 and a Kodiak 400, bought both used but neither broke. Switched gear oil to synthetic and oil to Rotella T6 5w40, which is wet clutch compatible (15w40 T6 is NOT compatible), and it worked amazing. Yamaha makes solid ATVs.

For what it's worth, I grease my gaskets. It holds the gasket in place, plus if/when to remove the cover down the road, the gasket doesn't tear. No leaks after 40 years of doing it this way. Cheers!

I tack the gasket to the cover and grease the engine side as a parting agent. I can pull those covers off many times then without replacing gasket

One way to stop the crank so it can be torqued, is to pull the spark plug, stuff the cylinder with a length of rope and rotate the crank until the rope compresses stoping the rotation. Torque as desired.

Good job!! BTW - I used to work on motorcycles back in the late 60s & early 70s... I always used Gascacinch Gasket Sealer and Belt Dressing to hold the gasket to the doweled case... Let it set up for a few minutes so it won't 'droop', then you can slide the case/cover together without concern for the gasket falling off of its register. Works slick... But you done good enough without it! ;)

What is interesting is that I completed this exact job just a couple months ago on the same machine. It is a fairly narrow year range, so it makes buying parts a bit of a pain. Anyways, on mine the neutral point (rubby donger) was worn flat, so it wasn't making proper contact. I replaced the point, and the spring behind it and I was good to go. The old neutral point was brass, but the new one was steel. Either way it worked.
@kevindesjardins1976 ай бұрын
Hey Eric, lot of times you just have to pull the sensor and clean the brass contact on the back side with little "000" scotch brite. Would love to see more small engine stuff. Cheers from Maine!

If you can't hold the gear set to torque the nut, I use a torque stick for tires to keep from over torqing with my impact gun. seems to work fine and is pretty close.

They still use this sytem on the newer bikes (my 2017 FJR), apparently it sometimes gets contaminated and it 'fixes' when you clean it. Look at the twowheeledobsession video's. On my bike the 4th gear doesn't always light up on the dash (and recently 5th and 6th sometimes too) so it probably needs a good clean too. Luckily nowadays they're fitted from the outside of the casing.

My kids pounded the snot out of that old Moto and ever since, any of the Yammies I had were more or less bulletproof. I still have my old 92' 250 2x4 Timberwolf....runs like a top and goes like hell. Not too keen on their bikes, but the wheelers are well worth the scratch in my view.

I had a 2000 Honda Goldwing 1500. You needed to put it in neutral to pull the handle to put it in reverse. I had the same problem, I could fiddle with it and sometimes it would go into neutral, but it was a pain. I sold it in 2015 with 130,000 miles on it. I told the new buyer about it because I didn't want to spend the money on getting it replaced. It too was inside the engine.

@williamallen78366 ай бұрын
That's because it doesn't have a decompressioen valve. So you are pulling against full engine compression. Just like the old lawnmowers. In the early 1990's they started using decompression valves on lawnmowers, and every got spoiled very quickly. Can't blame, it is much easier to use.
